The future of DART travel: DART+ Fleet
Welcome aboard for a glimpse of the future of DART travel, with our sample prototype of the new DART+ Fleet.
The mock-up of the DART+ experience follows customer and driver focus group research at all stages of design, with key features including:
- Prioritisation of independent access, with low-height doorway thresholds on all carriages equipped with an automatic retractable step and offering the potential for unassisted level access from suitable platforms, aligned with platform enhancements. In addition, improved dedicated wheelchair spaces will be provided.
- Improved facilities for families and for cyclists, with dedicated family areas, and bike storage.
- Enhanced customer information, with large, high-resolution onboard displays having the ability to provide real-time updates, including information from other public transport systems in the Transport for Ireland network, and other features designed for the needs of sensory impaired customers. The displays include features such as indicators for customers on busier areas of the train, advance notice of which side to exit the train.
- Charging facilities throughout for connected customers on the move.
- An advanced CCTV system with cameras throughout every carriage, to enhance safety and security for customers and employees.
- Comfortable individual seating, reflecting longer distances which the DART+ fleet will operate, designed following customer focus group testing.
Being manufactured in Alstom's facility in Katowice, Poland, the new trains are set to be delivered from 2024, and enter service from 2025. A total of 185 carriages, a mix of battery-electric and electric powered units, are currently on order.

Appreciate this preview. Looking forward to travelling on the new DARTs.
Very good video, like!
looks great guys. can't wait to see them in operation

It's for training the apprentices, something for them to work on. I'm surprised they didn't move it out of sight.
I like how these new DARTs look. The seats look a bit plastic but at least there’s way more room in the carriages than the current units. Plus there’s biking stacks.

The trains arnt compartmentalised which means you can’t get away from all the junkies just saying
Would your old Dart's still be on service by 2030 any chance just asking
When will the first battery powered Darts serve Maynooth & Newbridge ?
80km battery life so basically that's from connolly station to drogheda and back down as far as malahide before the battery goes flat. Makes little sense to me
Cool but what's the dart future number
Would like to see automatic knee-breakers for people who put their shoes on the seats.
Are they level boarding ?
Looks good but my main issue with the dart which has “rapid” in its name is the speed. 35 to 40 mins for a 20k journey from Bray to City Centre is painfully slow and simply not good enough.

@@murpho999I'm aware that's what you meant. I'm asking you how to reduce journey times. By removing stops, presumably? That would reduce the usefulness of the system for people.

seats should be along the side like in Japan

We don’t live in Japan this is way more efficient for Ireland it isn’t a metro…
Why not just electrify the existing rail lines. It would more sustainable and better in the long term.

Awkward seating layout that forces passengers to walk in the bottlenecks between rows, also not enough seats. Why not put the seats along the sides like the London underground does?. Less constriction. Less dead floor space. More seats and more standing room, better/quicker flow of people on and off at stations.

The DART is a commuter railway, not a metro system. This seating works better.

@@IESpotter DART is supposed to be a rapid transport system. Means quick in and quick out. Having seats aligned like a train, indicates they expect passengers to remain seated for many stops. Kev's comment is valid, if DART is supposed to be Rapid Transit, seating facing the centre isle would make more sense. You wouldn't be looking for long term comfort, accessibility and ease of access are the key things. But hey, what do I know :D

@@IESpotter how does it work better? What's the relevance of it being a commuter or metro railway to the seat layout? I've always found the DART seating comfortable, but the London underground seating layout is fairly comfy too and less awkward to get in and out quickly. The only downside is you're more likely to be squished up against someone since it's often laid out like a bench or church pew.

@@batlin It's not supposed to he busy for the entire day, whereas most metro systems will remain busy almost all day. The only time you will not get a seat on the DART (most of the time) is during Rush Period or on Event Period. For this time it makes sense to use metro style seating however for the rest of the day, it works better using bays as they can fit more seating in (less people standing during Off-Rush) . At the end of the day, the train operator must decide whether they put comfort over capacity or vice versa.
@batlin

@@IESpotter I see the logic there, but in my experience the DART has a mostly bimodal usage pattern: absolutely packed around peak hours (8-9am on the way into town, 4-6pm on the way out) and underused the rest of the time. I avoid rush hour directions because it's pretty unpleasant being packed in like sardines. But the rest of the time there's so many empty seats that I think the bench style seating would work just fine in both scenarios.
