The Future is here! Li-ion solar controller to charge Li-ion batteries

In this video, I'll show you how to charge a 12V Li-ion battery using nothing but sunlight! This is a newer technology that allows you to use a solar charge controller to charge Li-ion batteries. We have been using these controller to charge Lead Acid batteries but time has changed!

    I've been playing with the 2 cell version (7.4v) of this solar charge controller and have found it seems to trickle charge the cells. Have you noticed this and what are your opinions on whether this is a good or bad idea? Thanks for the video.

    Great video! i just wondering where you got your solar panel? It’s very slim. I hope to get similar product! Thanks for sharing.

    I have two of the 3.7v 3A versions of this controller and both have the same problem. If the battery goes below the low cutoff voltage (3.44v) on mine the batteries won't recharge. With fully charged batteries I get the following voltages Battery 4.16v, Load 4.16v, Solar panel 16.5v (18v panel, early morning, slightly overcast) but when the controller cuts off load I get 3.44v on both battery and solar panel terminals. Can someone tell me what is going wrong?

    what would be the optimal battery cell if this is a 3A Regulator? could I charge a 3000mAh 3S 11.1v 20C Lipo Battery Pack with this? thanks!

    3A at 12.6V is about 38W. That's the max power coming from your solar panel. That means every hour you get 38W or 38Wh of power coming from the solar panel to your battery (at max power). A 3000mAh battery in 3S config is 9000mAh total 9Ah. At 12.6V, it is 9x 12.6 = 113Wh. So to answer your question, yes you can use 113Wh battery pack for this setup. It only takes 113/38 = approx 3 hours to fully charge your battery pack. That means you can even use a bigger battery pack as you usually have an average of 5-6 hours of full sun every day.

    Thank! so now im going deeper into my thoughts: If I mix these things together what would be the best way to make this happen with this controler? parallel circuit with x2 controllers x2 portable solar panels? I would like to make 2 motors work with 1 controler 1 battery 2 small solar panels if possible... These are the specs of the hardware: MOTOR 1 Rated Voltage 3V /6V Rated Current

    Can anyone tell me if you can use the battery while charging, say, if I wanted an RC car that could charge while it was running? I know the panel couldn't keep up with demand, but could I do it, or would it ruin the batteries or catch them on fire?

  • @Markle2k

    It's all about the net flow of charge. Charging the RC car while running is fine if you can keep the wires from getting tangled while it is running around. A better choice for load would be something that doesn't move, though. ;~)

    cells full are 4.2 cells empty can be as low as 2.5-2.8 volt but safe is 3 volt 3.7 is normanal voltage this means when under load

  • @vuaeco

    @vuaeco

    8 жыл бұрын

    3.7V norminal when under load. If it's at 3.7V open circuit, it's time to recharge. You don't want to discharge it to 2.5V because that is completely empty. That's absolutely detrimental to the cell and will only last a few cycles before it dies on you for real.

    What is the point of a solar charger that only charges and nominal 11 volts when that won't even run a 12 volt inverter? They need to make one that charges a 24 volt lithium cell

    Could this be used to charge a 12V 12Ah battery? (this one: s.aliexpress.com/yMRVraiE) I was thinking about connecting it with 25W solar panel (Vmp = 18V; Imp = 1.39A; Voc = 21V; Iac = 1.53A) or perhaps two of those running in parallel. What would you recommend?

  • @vuaeco

    Sorry one more question. Can i use this regulator for car battery?

  • @vuaeco

    @vuaeco

    7 жыл бұрын

    No, you cannot use for car battery. A car battery needs to be charged at 14.4V max. This can only go up to 12.6V. Maybe you can use for a car battery if the battery is very discharged like 11V or less (which is very bad for the battery). But then you can only bring it up to 12.6V. To fully charge a car battery, you need to bring it up to 14.4V.
