Interesting test! So I just came back from a week long intensive video production with multiple 30min interview takes throughout the day during a very hot summer week and I never had any overheating warnings. But I was also using an external recorder and never filmed 4k 60p. Only 4K DCI 25p 10-bit 4:2:2. But I have shot 6K for 25min with the camera being in the sun with 37° celcius temperature and there was also no issue. One time I even filmed a 1,5 hour long guided tour (in three takes) on a gimble without an external recorder (4K 25p) and no issues there as well. I think your results would have been very different if you would have either flipped the screen out or turned the LCD off. For me the X-S20 proved to be a camera capable of working in demanding situations if you treat it right (meaning you use an external recorder and turn off the LCD, turn the camera off when not needed and so on). So for me perosnally there is no overheating issue at all.

Thanks. I wondered if there was a difference with an external recorder and that seems to be the case. A lot of the heat generating issues is probably from the processing necessary to save the video, which doesn’t happen if you just stream through the HDMI port. Equivalently if you configure the camera with live streaming (Twitch, Zoom) I also wonder how long it would last

So you are saying you need to use a 400$ external recorder (600$ if you want to take advantage of the camera’s 6K open gate feature) in order to avoid overheating? Because mi X-T3 can record several 20 min, 4K@60 10-bit, 200mbps clips back to back for 80 mins before the battery died. No overheating at all. With an external recorder it could do ProRes 4K 4:2:2 10-bit without having to press record, so this hardly reads like a compliment. It’s absolutely outrageous that the camera meant to compete with the a6700 and provide next level content creation capabilities has worse thermal performance than a 6 year old camera.

@@larrydiaz7156 I never had any overheating warning so far with and without external recorders. And I shoot in 6K open gate and 4K 10-Bit 4:2:2 360mbps a lot. But that is my personal experience. You are comparing a tiny entry level camera body to a bigger camera with less demanding codecs. For people who want a small camera with pro specs, the X-S20 is a win.

Thanks for doing this test. I have yet to change the setting from regular. I did buy the fan and it does make a difference. I have been doing mostly tests so I haven't shot much real world video. I'm an enthusiast exploring video after trying it with my H1. I bought the S-20 for travel so my shooting style won't require long takes. BTW, I started shooing movies when I was 10 when Santa brought me a Kodak Brownie 8mm camera. My high school job was shooting and editing film for a local TV station and went on to minor in film in design school. I've used Bolex, Beaulieu, Arri, Eclair, Canon and Auricon cameras.

Very helpful video. Thanks. I tried a test on my X-S20 running it at 1080, 24fps, Flog, around 65-68 degrees in a room. It ran for 1 hr and 35 mins and that's when the battery gave out. I never experienced a yellow warning light just a couple of beeps to say the battery life had expired. At this time I shoot mostly in 1080 so that's all I needed it to do. So far, so good.

The setting was on normal though... I have changed it to high and no overheating sign since then... but the camera gets warm pretty quickly and I fear that could become an issue, should it shut down at the wrong time... And with others like sony making 4k120 in 10bit a norm, yup, overheating is bound to occur. Have fans built directly into the camera is a must, I would say.

I own this camera. The overheating of the camera depends very substantially on the ambient temperature AND air flow. The issue is how quickly the heat can be dissipated from the camera body. I found that the fan can make a massive difference, but again, it depends on the ambient temperature and air flow in your room. I shoot in 4K 60fps, and without the fan, the camera will overheat and shutdown in roughly 15 minutes. With the fan, it never shuts down and recording length is determined by the battery and memory card.

Pulling the screen away from the body, and opening the battery door wile shooting video will help quite a bit.. Having the fan helps a lot too of course.

Despite your test and statement about the Reddit forum, claiming that people are overreacting, this is a major issue for me. I've just bought this camera and was navigating the menu, taking about 20 photos when the heat warning occurred. I was at home in about 23°C. Your test was on a tripod, but when handheld, you can definitely feel that the camera is getting hot. For me, it is not acceptable that semi-professional equipment has such drawbacks. Many people with the same issue are also on the official Fuji forum. The support response was to invest in a dedicated cooling system or to set the camera in power saver battery mode... really? This is not a budget camera. I think that this issue is a game-changer regarding choosing different gear.

This seems like it's location dependant. It seems like the tropical climate are the ones that are affected the most.
