The Fujifilm GFX50S II - It's Not Overkill!

Ғылым және технология

My photography journey is better off now that I shoot with the GFX system. I still have my X-T3/X100V but I find myself using them less and less, unless size + portability are crucial.

Vintage medium format lenses exist of one wants character; the hand in glove feeling of hi quality old lenses on Fuji bodies extends to the GFX series For StreetPhotography the wide lenses have a much more immersive feeling and there’s an ability to dive into an image that is hard to come by elsewhere. The shadow detail and quality may have something to do with the lower pixel density. Thanks for showing some high iso stuff, love the look and the night capability is always part of my thoughts on a camera body.

The *only people* who think the camera is overkill *have NEVER owned a medium format digital camera* That is the real deal. I'm a hobbyist. My subjects are my kids and a lot of urban decay landscape work -- Ohio is full of that (when I find the time). The 50Sii was worth every freaking penny, and I love my X100V, but the 50Sii is something very special.

Great review. Agree that the camera is special. I just picked one up and it even surpasses my 5DSR in terms of image quality, which I didn't know if it would given the sensor is a bit older. The colors and detail are simply stunning.

Yes! I mean, for mirrorless, the quality has really caught up to even the ultra high-end DSLRs of the day (like the 5DSR), but you're right. It is special and is simply 'stunning'. Unfortunately, it's still too slow to use in day-to-day for family casual shots BUT when I take it on jobs or to events, it wows when the photos come back always. Everyone is always so blown away. Can't wait to see what's next for the GFX team. Thanks for the comment Brian!!!

@@oxeneers Thanks, Dylan! Fujifilm had a sale going so I went for 2 (gulp) lenses: the 32-64mm f4, and 100-200mm f5.6. I have a pro photographer friend who uses those two with a GFX100s. He normally uses primes, but said both of those zooms are very sharp throughout their range. Wondering if I might have been better off substituting the 45-100mm zoom for one of them. Could still swap, but am thinking to stand firm, and maybe add another lens later.

@@jackhoyer7467 UGH. Very jealous. Both incredible lenses. I have the 35-70mm kit which is SO compact and incredible, but definitely lacks the sharpness and low-light perforamnce of the 32-64. However, the 100-200 is a godsend. Andy Mumford just posted a video from Africa using that lens and the 1.4x which is so good. You should watch it! You're going to be very happy in this system and if anything, you'll get the 45-100 to carry around more often, because weight becomes an issue with this system but the weight = image quality and that's what we're all after. @@oxeneers Thanks Dylan. Just watched a cool video made by Pete Elliot, a young British(?) photographer who took his new 50sII and the 35-70mm lens to the Scottish Highlands and got some amazing images! -kzread.info/dash/bejne/pIR8lc2tp7W6kdI.html. In addition, the lens looks to be quite compact. My path to the 50s II is a bit unusual. I’m a painter who has always used my cameras as an adjunct to my painting. I’ve pretty much only used fixed lens, small sensor cameras (although i tried to find ones with good lenses) the past 15 years. Now ,after being smitten, I’ve leap-frogged to medium format and a 50s II, and am looking forward to seeing where it takes me. Thanks for the Flickr suggestion and your link. I like your images quite a bit! I will check out the Andy Mumford video . Thanks for that as well.

Hi Dylan, excellent video. I can't agree more. I'm shooting with the GFX 50S II since November. I'm mainly a landscape shooter. What a difference with the GFX system compared to full frame, APS-C and m/ft . The dynamic range and the tonality of the GFX system blew me away. Yes the GFX system is not speedy (especially the old 50mb sensor), but if speed is not needed the GFX system is hard to beat.

Totally agree about the “fidelity”. There are always trade offs. Every tool has its stand-out strengths. For the GFX it’s that fidelity you talk about. For the X series it’s portability and ergonomics. I think the secret is to match the tool’s stand-out strength to the use-case. I choose my 50R when fidelity is important to me; complex landscapes with lots of detail, where the viewer wants to dwell in the image and explore that detail. I choose my X-pro2 for travel, when spontaneity and capturing the fleeting moment are more important. I tried an X-H2 for a few weeks, hoping for the “best of both worlds”. In fact I found it more “jack of all trades, master of none”.

I just got an X-H2 and was underwhelmed by it's long exposure noise on my first shoot out. More testing is needed, but the GFX interests me. I think the medium format look is not depth of field like most people think, because it's proven that it's no different than *equivalent* apertures and focal lengths from every other format, but the medium format look is just FIDELITY in general. High res, high sharpness, great color depth and dynamic range, etc. When you look at an image it's like a window into the actual scene. I'm going to have to move into it soon, my only question is, since I have a full X lens setup already, do I still keep the X-H2 or send it back during the return window to put the money towards a GFX 50S II now? I mostly shoot landscapes and skylines with some portraits and weddings thrown in. I still have an X-T3 though as my second camera. Hmm. Testing the X-H2 with senior pictures this weekend, so I should have a better idea how much I like it.

  • @oxeneers

Hey Clint. I know how it is. The long exposure noise on the new HR sensor is something that a lot of folks are seeing in their sample images. Medium Format is fantastic. I don't think the X-H2 sensor is of interest to me because the 40MP only shows its worth in Pixel Shift mode. Gordon from Camera Labs has a really good side-by-side between the X-H2S and X-H2. The X-H2 just isn't there for me. Medium Format is the way to go there.

My thoughts exactly. Picked one up a few months ago, just blown away by the tonality and fidelity of the files. Just wish there were more lens options, especially wide and fast, even from third parties. It's all definitely a reach but if you like photography and have a bit of FOMO, it's more reasonable than springing for a 100s

@@oxeneersThere's so much leeway to push and pull the files, even with the old sensor... 50mp on one that size means big photosites that gather lots of light and color info. Another interesting facet is that you're now shooting in 4*3 aspect ratio. I actually love 2*3, but if you're looking to print in common frame aspect ratios, you end up cropping a lot from the 2*3. Just my 2c coming from a (very) semi-pro landscape photography viewpoint.

Long comment alert lol This is really interesting and dangerous to watch lol. I think Fuji is making the coolest stuff for sure, and I’m glad the AF capabilities of the X-HS2 have brought me back into the ecosystem. I love the styling of the xpro3 but the bang for buck resolution of the GFX series is so interesting. The trouble is, you watch KZread reviews and can’t really see the detail the person is talking about. I shot an r5 for a year and didn’t notice more detail there than in my 20-something megapixel cameras. Still, everyone says it, and you’re not kidding about the colour and falloff. I wonder what the difference is between the 50 100 gfx bodies? I really want to try one of these! I’ll wait until I can afford to buy into a second system though lol. I don’t imagine I’d want to give it back once I got my hands on it!

Dude so well said. They're absolutely doing the most fun, innovative, and "coolest" stuff for sure. Canon/Sony/Nikon are really catering towards the mass market and honing in on the pros with the really high priced bodies but Fuji, with the GFX line, have put the 50S II out for hobbyists like me to get their feet wet with medium format. It's even on sale for $500 off right now which is insane to think about. The bank for the buck when it comes to resolution is so true. The 100S vs 50S II debate is simple - more resolution on the 100S, better AF (phase vs. contrast), and better video. I'm getting the X-H2S for video and doing stills with the 50S II. I slow down when I shoot and use the autofocus slowly so it's not the worst for me. But yes, be very fucking careful here. The stuff you shoot would be a tough job for the GFX system because you get about 50% keepers to be honest, regardless of subject, but the image quality, WHEN it hits is unbelievable.

@@oxeneers I definitely googled if wildlife made sense with a medium format haha. While wildlife is my main go-to, I really am a generalist though. I would say landscape is my second passion, and studio portrait work is high up there. I set up a studio with lights at home but haven’t used it much yet due to lack of time and willing models (we live pretty remote and my wife is tired of posing lol). But I’d definitely use a gfx and wouldn’t care about a slower process. I’m sure it’ll be something I check out eventually. I’ll have to download some Raws and check them out. I’ve got a 4K monitor too, so it would be good to see the files and appreciate them!

It's a complex answer. Most people are referring to the JPEG colors but the "color science" discussion refers even to the choice of White Balance on photos and how the colors are rendered. Most of that is the Fujinon glass which is well documented to have a unique rendition with regard to color, and also how the basis of colors shift a certain way and the overall result (before even post-processing) is uniquely Fuji.

Sorry if my point wasn’t clear but my sentiment is that nobody sees the GFX line as a necessity unless they’re doing commercial work. In no way was it ever meant to be condescending, not in the slightest. I still stand by my assessment that for the average professional photographer, a GFX is nice to have but not NEED to have.
