I loved the original series when i was younger, but now I'm obsessed with the reboot series

I actually never watched either anime but really got into the manga as a teen. While I grew out of the story a bit now at 30 I'm still grateful for the part it had in me growing up. The older i got the more I could relate to different characters and why they made the choices they made. This isn't something you get from a lot of manga in my experience. Grew from a Kyo fan because I related to his anger at life into a Yuki fan because thats how I developed as well. Still like them both of course. Now as an adult I definitely can also see where thise characters were coming from. Shojo manga really don't get the credit they deserve for their story telling.

I loved being able to see the whole story. I watched it while in labor. (epidural leaves you helpless.) so it was a great comfort to me throughout its revival

When I heard Takaya-sensei didn't like the 01 anime it made perfect sense to me after the final two episodes. It's crazy how Tohru, Yuki, Shigure, and Akito are mischaracterized. Akito being shown as a man in the last episode completely ruined a season 2 ever being possible. Up until then it only had slight changes that didn't effect the story too much.

I personally love the manga, original anime and the reboot. All of them are wonderful. I can appreciate all of them in their own ways. Each one made me feel very deeply.

Fruits basket is one of the only manga series that I followed from the beginning. It meant so much to me when I was growing up, and when I anime came out I was SO happy. It's a shame that the drama overshadows it, but also I'm really happy there was another anime made. It's a beautiful story and I really enjoyed this analysis!!!

This is a fantastic video! I feel like there is so much heart in the original Fruits Basket anime which is quickly looked down upon bc of the incompleteness of its narrative. It's usually blamed for something that isn't its fault-merely a consequence of its time. While it's nice to have the full Fruits Basket story in animated form in the remake (and excuse me if this is a bit of a controversial take),it has definitely lost some of the visual personality the original anime has much more of. Daichi's quote of "don't watch anime, watch movies, read books" is SO prolific and important because the medium of anime is different from manga- it can expand still images widely and to a greater emotional payoff to the audience. Bring them to life on screen with sound, visuals and motion. The original Fruits Basket, to me, has a lot of impressive cinematography and pacing than the super clean and sterile feel of the modern anime. Daichi's words of Fruits Basket being "too pretty" come to mind in which the modern anime feels just that....too pretty. But again, it's personal bias, since I grew up with the original anime and can appreciate the artistry throughout. (And that older OST ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes!) But I think it's more important of note how important Fruits Basket is as a legendary shoujo manga and a first to many.

You articulated yourself well here! I've seen a few people online and I certainly know a few people myself who don't particularly care for the style of the reboot. I do think it's pretty in its own right but like you said the directing of the original is just unmatched. I like how experimental it is too, including mixed media and making a lot of decisions you would never think of. I talk about Kodocha quite a bit in this video but I would recommend that if you're a fan of Fruits Basket or Daichi in general. To me it's the closest thing to a proto Fruits Basket there is. I remember trying to watch the reboot when it came out and just thinking how boring it was. It had no heart compared to the original anime in my opinion. It felt like it was taking itself too seriously and focusing on aesthetics over any of the humor (that was also in the manga). Plus the art style, while more mainstream, doesn't give off any individuality and felt dishonest(?) ig. I agree with how you called it sterile. I never really finished the reboot because of that (also the second half of the manga pissed me off and to see it in the anime would also piss me off as it's supposed to tell the full story). The original anime in 2001 was my childhood. The manga ruined my perception of the series. And the reboot has made me sick of all of it overall. Of course this could all be nostalgia speaking, and I'm aware of that. But I feel like the Fruits Basket story in the manga falls flat near the end (and can even be a harmful message sometimes) and to see it getting replicated in the reboot anime isn't very admirable in my opinion.

I 100% agree too! The 2001 FB has such charm and luster to it. I just wish that the 2001 version had followed the plot more, added more details of background surroundings, had a wider variety of sound effects, and had less strange and questionable art at times xD sometimes the characters look alien. I just wish we could pick and choose the good and bads of both and combine them the make an ultimate one series

Fruits Basket really is a great watch, but you have to watch it before you get too old, or else you'll spend the entire time pulling your hair out about how a quarter of the parents in the series belong in prison.

Just have to mention that I grew up in Indonesia and my brothers and I loved a Japanese magical girl anime we watched there. However we’ve spent 20 years trying to find the name since moving back home. The one random mention of “Cha Cha” here solved what was literally a decades long mystery for us. Thank you!

A fascinating ending. I love your commentary on media discussion and how dealing with sensitive content or problematic creators can affect us in complicated ways.

As someone who feels very strongly about Furuba and whose life was heavily influenced by the manga series, including it to have shaped much of the person I have become, I really feel like I want to share my thoughts on some things you seem to have conviently left out of your video. It might have been because you focused on the 2001 anime at large, but probably the most important key factor which you have said throughout the video: that the 2001 anime was your first introduction to the series. I found Furuba when I was a little girl and I fell in love with the story, the characters and everything. To this day, it is one of the only manga that I have read multiple times and even though it was very heavy on the dialogue, it never got old. So I was stoked to find out about the fact that it got made into an anime and during my Shoujo anime phase I went ahead and watched it. And I was so devastated by what had been done to my most favourite manga of all time, it doesn't matter if some scenes were exactly like they were in the manga. That's not necessarily what makes a good adaptation. I don't think differentiating from the source material is a problem if it's well done. One of the main thing I hated about the anime was that Shigures character was so flat and had that slapstick kinda aura about him. Don't get me wrong, he is funny like that in the manga too, but it just hits different. Shigure is a two-faced character, which as the reader, we learn fairly early on. His "fun persona" is always just an act, even according to himself. In the anime however, they didn't manage to convey this fact about him which just ended up making him the weird, pervert uncle dude hanging around the house - which is a prominent figure in many manga and anime, but after having read the manga many times it just didn't sit right with me to portray Shigure in such a way. It bothered me all throughout all of the episodes. What was even worse though was the fact that the anime ended where the actual story of the manga just really began. I couldn't believe it at the time that the anime would be cancelled at the crucial scene that it was, but also it didn't surprise me, because everything before that scene was executed rather poorly and people who didn't know the manga would probably not keep being interested in the characters if they weren't able to binge the episodes (aka watching one episode every week when it came out in 2001). What you also left out entirely was that there was actually a remake of the anime that came out last year I believe and it's awesome. It was published on Netflix Japan and it was waaaay better than the poor attempt of an anime adaption from 2001. The characters were exactly as multi-faceted as they were in the manga, the story and nuances conveyed so much better and even someone who might have never seen Furuba before could have become a new fan. What I didn't understand is why Netflix Japan pulled it soon after it was released. I wanted to rewatch it just a little while after I finished watching it once and it was already gone. Considering that Furuba seems to have many conspiracies around it, this might start a new fire. But I don't care about that. I don't know if the new anime is available overseas and if it got subbed or dubbed, but if you ever get a chance, watch it. No matter how much you maybe like the slapstick anime art of that particular creator, as a very honest fan of the manga I can't say the 2001 anime hit the spot (which was probably also why it was cancelled). The new version did however. It still had funny moments but it wasn't as shallow as most slapstick is. And that was the real Fruits Basket Problem in my opinion. And something along the lines of that opinion was somehow what I was expecting when I saw the title of the video. Didn't think it would go into such a different direction, lol. In all honesty though, I just want to leave you with some constructive criticism as well after dumping my emotional wildfire (I'm sorry, I just feel really strongly about Furuba): I think you should establish the reasoning for your title at the beginning of your video essay. I was watching it the whole time wondering what exactly now is the problem with Fruits Basket. It would have been a lot more helpful to know upfront where you were going with it so that it's easier to follow your reasonings and conclusions and I hope you maybe can keep that in mind for other videos to come.

I was comparing the manga to the anime scene-by-scene for a bunch of episodes while making this video and found that Daichi's anime very often does a good job of capturing the essence of Takaya's original work. Labeling him or the anime as a work of pure slapstick is very disingenuous. The comedic intensity is basically 1:1 with the manga most of the time. His drama is what I'm the most drawn to and is a big part of why the series left such a strong impression on me in the first place. He mentioned reading the manga and not really getting it the first time and I was probably the same. I've come to love and appreciate it a lot more now and it's partially thanks to Daichi's adaptation making it click for me in the first place. If anything I think the 2001 anime should get some credit for at least introducing so many people to the franchise. I don't have as much of an opinion on the remake as I have not fully completed it, nor have I actually finished the manga yet. As I mentioned in the video, I like every incarnation of it, but I have the most attachment to Daichi's version. That could change when I complete the manga or remake, but that's how it stands now. Honestly I don't like how some people push this idea that because the reboot exists and tells the complete story, the existence of the original is invalidated and you shouldn't watch it. Though I may revisit the reboot someday and make a more wholistic video on how I feel about the series that's more related to the actual story of Fruits Basket and less about everything going on behind the scenes. @haydenluvsanime I didn't and don't mean to upset you, however I do believe it probably would have been better to at least finish the manga series and therefore know the whole story before making a video essay about it. 🙈 The conclusions of all the relationships from the different characters with and without each other show very important character growth, not just for the fictional characters themselves but also for Takaya as a writer. The beginning of the manga might show that she hasn't put much thought into it, but the more the story progresses the more it shows how deep and meaningful it is. Which is why I don't find the slapstick-y humor to be fitting, no matter how it was portrayed in the first volumes of the manga. I was only pointing that out because the video you made seemed to be heavily focused on the slapstick aspect. I find it admirable that you put so much work into this and it surely means a lot to you. It just probably isn't the anime/manga series you're most passionate about and that's okay. If I was in your shoes, I'd probably make videos about stuff I like but not love too much at first, to get better at making videos and put out something that I am really passionate about once I feel more comfortable in my skills. You can never make everyone happy and someone like me is just always gonna show up - Furuba shaped most of my childhood and much of my teen years. It might sound weird, but I have always aspired to be like Touru, and a lot of my character traits have definitely manifested by that childhood-aspiration. One very important thing that happens with her is that towards the end (no content spoilers) she realizes that it's okay to be selfish at times, that always putting everyone else first will leave you with nothing left for yourself. Wonderful and very important life lesson in my opinion. I do also believe that one of the reason neither you nor him "got it" the first time you were reading it is because you weren't the main audience that Takaya wanted to reach. Because I got it, immediately, and as I have now said one too many times: it influenced my life heavily. I saw Touru struggling with family, struggling with friends, struggling with being a girl that wasn't wanted just because she was the child of someone the family didn't approve of, and I connected to that, I felt it. But then finding the few people that really care about her, some of them like she is family, appreciating her for the motherly love she selflessly gives to those who need it but never got it, and ultimately even maybe be lucky enough to find someone she loves despite all the odds and they loving her back. The friends might have been the "odd ones", but that's what made them special and it's what showed her their love for her was just as real as they were about their personality they showed to the world. Because they wouldn't fit into a mould and neither should she have to do so. It was a manga for girls, a manga that would reach girls and could teach girls, especially the lonely ones who never had the loving embrace of a good family home, important things about life. I really don't mean to sound angy but I don't think grown-up men were the intended target audience for this. (Not saying they can't like it. Please like it. Just saying they probably weren't the target.) I would love for you to revisit the manga (or the 2019 anime adaptation) in its entirety and meet the story at the end someday. Maybe you'll make another video essay… or maybe I'll beat you to it 😜 (If I ever muster up the courage to put up videos on the internet… lol). For that I will definitely give you credit and I appreciate you reading my comment and taking time to reply, even though it probably got you heated for a moment. Just know Furuba is for me what Lord of the Rings is for many others and I really don't mean to pick a fight, I just feel too strongly about it not to share my opinion. Regarding the 2001 anime, I'd honestly just say let's agree to disagree. I have never watched any of the other work he's done that you've mentioned, but you seem to be a pretty big fan of his work in general. I personally believe that "the original" is still Takayas manga and not the 2001 anime. I'm not saying you or anyone else isn't allowed to like it, but so am I allowed to dislike it. And maybe, if you ever get around to get to the end of Furuba, you'll be able to understand… or at least see where I'm coming from.😊 All the best to you and lots of luck for future projects!

@@captainkacke1651 Your comment didn't upset me at all. I know many fans share a similar sentiment and I appreciate you telling your side. For me having rewatched the series multiple time to pick up on as many details as possible to make this video (my notes were over 10,000 words) there were a lot of things I struggled seeing eye to eye on when it came to a lot of the common criticisms specifically regarding Fruits Basket. Kodocha to me is a much stronger example of a show you could argue neutered the manga which because it had to run for 102 episodes and therefore deviate more from the manga to keep on that schedule. So in that case, even though I still like the anime for its own reasons, I actually far prefer the manga because it feels a lot more focused and balanced to me overall. Because the original Fruits Basket anime only adapted what was available at the time it never got to that point where it had to pull a ton of new content out of its ass to fill out episodes or seasons which could be hit or miss. I think I mentioned it in the video but when you're working within a TV time slot, you have a select amount of minutes to work with so anime will almost always have to add extra scenes or draw others out to fit within that format. In Akitaro Daichi's creator profile from the July 2006 issue of Newtype USA, he notes that because they had to add a bunch more comedic scenes to fill out the episode, episode 6 turned out to be the staff's least favorite episode. So it's clear to me that it was sometimes a necessary evil for the staff too and that if they had been working in a more flexible format they may have also opted to make something closer resembling a true 1:1 adaptation. I sympathize with their struggles and want those efforts to be seen and recognized by more people. Before making this video I had completely forgotten the episode where the Prince Yuki fanclub spies on Hanajima and how it's depicted in the original anime but it's super cool and experimental. Personally speaking, 99% of the time I'm always for anime deviating from the manga because I want it to be different and expanded upon. When it comes to magical girl anime especially I don't think there's a single case for me where I think the manga even holds a candle to the anime. The only potential exception I can think of right now would be anything made by Arina Tanemura, but even so I think the Full Moon and Jeanne anime are still incredible. Hope that gives you some more insight on where I'm coming from. I just remembered that a while ago before I had revisited the anime to make this video I caught myself buying a complete bundle of all the manga volumes. I don't recall my exact course of events, but reading it there was a point early on where it finally clicked for me and I grew super invested in the story. I had seen the original anime long before then before the remake came out so for me it was like rediscovering it. I may have then gone back to the anime sometime after that and with that context of having read some of the manga beforehand it made the anime click for me instantly. So in retrospect it may have just been the manga doing that for me this entire time but I do think that from the point I've read it I do prefer how the anime covers that material for the most part with few exceptions. At the end of the day if the story in the first place wasn't very good, I don't know how much they would've been able to do with it. But that is very much not the case here. I think even if the remake isn't as experimental or daring I could possibly end up preferring it too because it does complete the story and from what little I remember of what I watched it's obviously very competent at doing so. But I'm always going to have a lot of respect for the original and it deserves credit where credit is due. Even just the music is incredible. The OP and ED are among my all-time favorites. I'd love for you to make a video on it! Inakyu, who voices Takaya in the video, funnily enough just so happened to release her Fruits Basket video on the same day as me and I think I remember her talking about making it roughly around the time I asked her to record the lines. Her video was really a really cute and to the point recommendation of the remake.

Feel like we might've both got something out of it :) Thank you for taking the time to comment and interact with me in this respectful way. I don't know if I could do the same… which is one of the reasons I'm just kinda too afraid to upload stuff online. And still I really hope that someday you'll find time to finish Furuba. 😊 After all this I'd honestly be really interested in what you have to say about how it all wraps up. And btw, you don't have to start disliking something just because there is a new version of it! I mean, many people love the older movie versions of Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice, many love the newer ones and can't stand the older ones. And don't even get me started on the Harry Potter books vs. movies discourse. I was one of the kids who loved the movies also because I watched them first and ended up never really liking the books despite bringing myself to read more than three of them. People who grew up with the books will often times hate on the movies lack for details and stuff, but then there's just fronts who allow themselves to like both (although HP has other problems that I convienently left out for the sake of my argument right now). It's normal for us humans to like something we see or hear first more than the thing we see or hear second. More than once I have found myself liking cover songs more than the original simply because I heard the covers before I ever listened to the original song. Sooo… I think you are totally free to always hold up a spot in your heart for the 2001 anime, no matter if you are gonna like or dislike the 2019 anime. As a fan of the original manga, I personally enjoy the 2019 series a lot more, but it was a remake, because the 2001 version was cancelled, whatever the reasons may have been. It was a remake that was much more informed about where the manga was headed in the end and it gave the producers an advantage. But it doesn't mean other people that aren't me should have to agree and dislike the 2001 anime as well just because I do :'D I have never been in discourse with anyone about this btw, because I never considered Furuba to be a "successful anime" tbh. Maybe it was in the States, but noone I knew around me growing up knew about it (I'm originally from Germany), most people only knew like Pokemon and YuGiOh and stuff that was on TV. And now that I live in Japan, even here, Furuba is just one of many many many Shoujo manga that most people maybe have heard the title of but have never actually seen or read. Which is sad, but I accept that. Just because it has influenced my life in this very specific way doesn't mean everyone else has to have the same feelings about it. It will still be my most favourite manga series of all time :) And thank you for the video recommendation, I'll check it out! Also, this is totally unrelated and I don't know if you including it in your video was meant as a joke, but I just wanted to let you know that Onigiri are literally just rice balls, usually filled with hearty ingredients, not at all sweet or resemblant of fruits. They are usually filled with different types of fish or seaweed, or simply just seasoned with salt. It's like a Japanese sandwich, because rice is such an important stable in most meals here. I work at a convienence store and most people just come in to grab one or two Onigiri, maybe in combination with a sandwich or a miso soup variation, and go on about their days. So, Touru was actually quite literally bullied for being a little simple minded, which unfortunately happens all too often in Japanese schools and everyday life as well. Bullying and othering in Japan are usually very subtle, you'll rarely run into people that threaten violence upon you for being different, but unfortunately many people will remind you of you being an 'other' every single day, even if you just step outside the line a little bit. To make a full circle: This is also why I believe Furuba to be such a powerful manga, because it highlights these issues.

To me some of the most important things I seek out in a content creator, or anyone in general, is honesty and ambition. If you can present your thoughts and arguments in a well-articulated way with full confidence and respect for the craft, you'll earn my respect and attention. Keep pushing yourself in new directions you might be afraid of at first because that'll make you grow the most. Putting this video together had me riddled with anxiety left and right but I threw my body against the wall because I wanted it to exist even if it was detriment to my mental health at times. That's the cost I'm more than willing to pay. Furuba is definitely one of those series that's popular across the globe and is ingrained in the fandom. I think because it wasn't as readily available on television as Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh, it wasn't as big of a part of that same monoculture. So I could say Bocchi the Rock right now is a super popular title because I see it everywhere, but if you go up to people on the streets and ask about it they will likely not know it is. Similarly a lot of the anime I grew up watching and remember seeing everywhere were not popular among my friends and aren't talked about as much anymore now because there's always a new zeitgeist to be excited about. But I think Furuba is in a better place now than ever because a lot of new fans are experiencing it through the remake which offers a complete alternative to the manga so people who only like to watch anime can now finally enjoy the full story. It was meant as a joke. I wanted to put a twist on the jelly donut meme because it's such a widespread meme, so I drew Brock and acted like I didn't know what an onigiri was. I understood the symbolic representation of the riceball and why the series is named is named after the Fruits Basket game. There was one author note I remember stumbling across of Takaya saying she tried out some different names for the series, but settled on Fruits Basket and couldn't imagine naming it anything else afterwards. The title is a representation of the core themes of the series.

The way I prefered the story behind the adult trio (especially Hatori + side story with the ex-fiancée and the teacher, Mayu). I had the manga as well. I wished we had more

Shoujo Anime often gets very bad treatments. Either diverting from the source, or left hanging incomplete, but mostly not even getting an adaptation. I don’t have positive opinions about the 2001 Anime. I also haven't read the manga. The new one, tho. That hits the spot. I advise you to also check it out. There's not many Shoujo Anime that get treated with so much care. Chihayafuru is well adapted but incomplete like so, so, SO many Shoujo. It's frustrating to be a fan of that manga demographic and not getting served on the animation side. Fruits Basket 2019 needs credit for being complete, for being truthful and respecting of the source. I only have Rose of Versailles or Fushigi Yuugi in mind that got more care from the top of. my hat. (the latter had poor production quality tho). to me the most frustrating part is having heaps of shoujo content available from several decades but not being able to enjoy a lot of it because it's either not subbed or in terrible quality like with sensual phrase. the stuff is already out there, it's just that nobody goes back to sub it. luckily rose of versailles and fushigi yuugi are not among those and are fantastic looking forward to watching the reboot someday!

actually one of the best moments in the series for me. i always find it so disappointing when 01 haters cant give it any credit whatsoever. i refuse to believe anyone would prefer her introduction in the manga over the 2001 anime

replying instead of editing but i just finished this vid and i must say it is EVERYTHING! ive been looking into this as well and ive always been frustrated about the lack of sources. ive loved 2001 furuba dearly since my childhood and i was rly sad to learn that the creator hated it (though i do understand since they did change around some things) whether its true or not doesnt matter much in the end but its annoying to see that info shared constantly with no information to where it came from. i respect the 2019 version for being more faithful to the manga but i cant personally get into it as much as the 2001 one. ive read the entire manga as well and i love it so much, but even then the 2001 anime is still my personal fave! thanks for making such an informative video on this topic, it means the world to me to be able to learn more about my favorite anime with actual sources and amazing editing. thank you for this video!!!

As you can tell from the first part of my online name I have been a fan of the first anime since it was a fansub only. The moment they released the DVD set I bought it. I love the slapstick humor, and I especially found Tohru extremely relatable. That is missing in the remake. Re-watching the original many years later I can see my older self in not just Tohru, but in the others too. The remake is okay, and it is nice that they finished the story, but it is not the same as the original. There was not much of a balance in the remake, and it lacked the morals and humanity that was in the original.

i actually didn't find the comedy to be all that slapstick for the most part in the original anime. it is more or less the same as in the manga. but i do like how cinematic and ambitious the original is

The humor you are talling about is the old 2000 that tbh doesn't fit anymore. I do still think its goofy and silly close to being levels of Gintama but well it is what it is.

This is a fantastic video. I saw your Sailor Moon video you made a couple of months back and fell in love, so I’m happy that you did a fruits basket one! This is the first time I’m hearing anything about the directors actions and I liked the way you discussed the matter. I think we do need to acknowledge that there ARE terrible people who can create positive impacts on others. I loved you addressing people’s view in Chobits! I remember having a tainted view on it before watching the show because of all the things that people have said about it, but it too became one of my favorite stories of all time! Another aspect that you did great at was addressing the misinformation spread about the author. I don’t understand why people love to lie on creators works by saying the studios tortured them when that quite literally didn’t happen, the same thing happens when people talk about Naoko and the 90s Sailor Moon anime. I’m excited to see what your next video will be about!

with naoko takeuchi i can only really recall that animerica interview i cited where she said she had problems with tuxedo masks depiction in the anime. but in the original laserdisc interview from the original series she is ecstatic and says its everything she could have hoped for. the animerica one came later though so it could be argued that she was just being overly excited about the prospect of having her work adapted and the more it went out the more problems she worked up. the animerica interview came later so i decided to lean into that but i have a hard time believing she hates the anime even just based on those first impressions. its so funny to me just how many people misinterpret chobits so bad that they literally get the thesis of the series completely wrong. like did we watch the same show??? lmao

Its important to note the American version and the Japanese version is very different. They heavily altered the story and some characters. Especially Uranus and Neptune. Tuxedo mask was greatly disliked by the director so they cut his lines and used him just to give moral lessons and occasional intervention. He was 2d.

I think with problematic creators there is no universal answer. I tend to lean on how much direct profit or influence is linked to a person I see as problematic. Like J K Rowling is almost impossible to see as a separate entity from Harry Potter. Like her power and influence are directly liked to HP relevance. Where as Joss Weadon has directed a lot of things and it’s easier to see something like Avengers as their own entity seperate from his involvement then say Buffy the Vampire slayer which is so much his baby. I think there are places where it’s right to seperate yourself feom a work in order to reduce a benefit to a problematic currently living creator creating current problems. But also that there is no harm in looking with positivity on works of the past and noting the goof things in them despite their problematic creator. It’s a dance each of us have to take on solo and I also think we have to give grace to other people who may not see it as we do.

in such cases i would choose to torrent or buy it secondhand if i really want to check it out for whatever reason. jubei-chan is the only series from daichi i have seen that i have a hard time separating the art from the artist for so i would never want to own it. sucks because i have an extremely high respect for all of the animators who worked on that show, but i couldn't get behind the story and the way the show treats its main character

@@HaydenTheHistorian The problem is power and influence isn’t just money. jK Rowling is a good example. Unless you enjoy it by yourself in a hole and never engage with her work outside of that hole, likely you are talking about it with friends, who then want to check it out. Or sharing it with a community who is engaging in direct means benefitting that creator. JK Rowling could never make another dime on Harry Potter and never be poor. George Lucas is still seen as an important person (he hasn’t done anything wrong I know of just making a point) even if he never makes or directly profits from another Star Wars thing in his lifetime. People will still want his opinion on Star Wars and he still has incredible power and influence on the Star Wars community and media at large. Even tho he didn’t build the castle of Star Wars by himself to be honest. Giving power and influence to problematic creatives extends beyond them simply getting a cut of the direct profits you spent on a piece of media. So for me when they are living creatives this affects how I engage with their work. Also not every creator is inextricably linked to the work they produce. Like and anime director and say an anime writer. The director maybe disconnected enough that I feel less bothered. My example of Joss Weadon when it comes to Avengers vs his baby, Buffy the Vampire slayer…which I have more mixed feelings about engaging with now.

First time watching your videos and I really enjoyed it. I don't even like Fruit Basket as an anime or a manga, but the information you shared was very interesteing. Fruits Basket will always be my favorite manga/anime series.. when anyone ask me what is my favorite I always tell them the same. I got into it when I was in Middle school some of the darkest times of my life if I'm being honest but what saved me was the Sohma family and even to this day being an adult I still relate to Tohru. She was my first Cosplay I ever did .. I don't do her now due to the fact learning about my Gender and things but she still sepical to me. Honestly her and Sora (Kingdom Hearts) to me are super simliar they both mean alot to me.

Great video! It also shown some light on the rumors surrounding Takaya and Daichi. I'm definitely like you the original anime was my first intro to Furuba. I loved it back then and I still love now. I always love the readapted version as well because once I was finish watching the show and got my hands on all 23 volumes of Furuba I told myself, "Wow if only they could have just continued the story!" Which I was so glad when they made the announcement in 2019. I'd also be curious on your opinion on the controversy that has been going around with Tohru's parents and the whole Katsuya grooming Kyoko.

In a 2020 interview with Funimation, the interviewer asked "Fruits Basket covers many important issues: suicide, depression, parental abuse. But what stands out the most is Fruits Basket's ability to portray those topics emotionally and accurately. What steps did you take to craft such an honest depiction of difficult topics?" She replied "I think my approach was to depict these issues "as they are." I actually haven't gotten that far myself yet but I wouldn't be surprised if she or a friend of hers went through something similar since Takaya stated that every character is an extension of herself. Just like the many other comments, this is a seriously great video. I'm scrambling to organize my thoughts really- because this video feels very aligned with how I have recently dove back into Fruits Basket. Just to preface, I grew up with the manga and was reading it by every volume release, but the 2001 anime was my real introduction to it and only recently did I decide to watch the 2019 series, which then led to rewatching the 2001 anime right as I finished the reboot. And just like you, I realized the 2001 anime was very inline and even at times enhanced moments from the original manga, so it was itching my brain so badly on where the rumor of the author and director having beef came from, and how it even snowballed to some fans just disregarding the 2001 anime due to that belief. I didn't really know where to begin when it came to dissecting this rumor, so I just kinda ended up taking it to face value, even if it didn't entirely make sense to me (I guess I felt there was something that maybe I wasn't getting- that maybe it was obvious to others there was a glaring problem the 2001 anime had that would obviously upset the author, and I just didn't see it.). But I feel like with all the given sources you scavenged together, you managed to align the timeline of events in a way that actually clears up so many spots from the rumor. Like, I can finally put that itchy nagging feeling in my brain to rest. I know there probably won't be a real answer as to what the author truly felt- being a wellknown author for one of the most popular manga out there I can imagine you're not exactly bearing your soul out to the public. And we don't know everything of the ins and outs of this anime, why decisions were made, and what we can only make sense of with comments from people within. Really this can all end in just speculation, but I do feel this might finally put this rumor to rest- at least until something else comes up about it. What I'm trying to say is: thank you for taking the time and effort to look into this rumor. Not only did you explore so many things I didn't know about Fruits Basket (and I've been a fan for 15 years now I think?) but even touching up on the previous voice actors experience, the controversy surrounding Daichi, and how we as fans approach media with these hard topics was very nuanced and spoken with a lot of care. The "ouroboros" of it all is exhausting, and we're all still learning how to come about the things we love when it does get dicey because, well... we're people with morals, we're all shaped by our own experiences, and it's hard when things start to conflict with it. It gets all the more difficult on an ever increasing platform and the pressure that comes along with it. I can't articulate my entire thoughts down on that matter in my already too long youtube comment, so I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to say! TLDR: 10/10, certainly did not expect this when clicking the video, learned so much more about furuba and did some introspection, and also really awesome video editing. The notebook style when it came to the quotes was such a nice visual touch! (also sorry if my sentence structure is a little all over the place, its like way past midnight as I'm typing this)

I noticed you used the kodocha soundtrack in this video I think a video on that anime would be good as it’s less known than a lot of other shoujo from that time and the first season dub is probably one of my favorites of all time

been wanting to talk about kodocha for probably over 2 years at this point. i mentioned in another reply but the series is very long and i wanna do it justice so it may still be some time. i do have plenty of research material for it though so there will probably be lots of neat trivia

10:05 One name I remembered sticking out to me when I saw the show as a teenager was Hiroshi Nagahama, who storyboarded and directed eps 18 and 25 as well as directing the OP. Considering he'd later go on to direct horror series with both Aku no Hana and the upcoming Uzumaki, it feels like his off-kilter approach to portraying Saki in that episode feels even more in-line with his later work than the rest of Fruits Basket.

I love both animes. One always has to remember that the series wasn't finished when the first anime was made. The creators did the best they could with what they had and it turned out great. But I'm also happy about the remake cause the manga especially in the late chapters had really great parts that make a whole different impact.

I liked the 2020's adaptation more. I actually finished it. I'm halfway through this video and realised it's not going to be mentioned, or if it is, not in a chapter. Sad.

Really love that Kodocha parody and background music use. Such a beautiful gem of a anjme/manga. You should talk about Kodocha sometime especially when Discotek just released Season 2. They fixed the subtitles and arguably fixed Fuka's character by no longer making her a inferior Sana clone that she was in the fansubs. One of my personal favourites of mine. Nurse Angel Ririka seems like a interesting show😅

Best of luck for that Kodocha retrospective/analysis ✌ Kodocha is peak stuff (aside from the NY arc) Currently group watching S2 again with Discotek's Media new and improved subtitles and it has been a blast. It's strange that Daichi's comedy style worked so well in Kodocha while that same style produced mixed to unfavourable results for OG Fruits Basket.

kodocha is definitely more intense with its comedy. i find that the original furuba anime is more or less the exact same as the manga with maybe a couple outliers, otherwise its clear that they paid respect to the source material

When I was a kid I didn’t really lean closer to Yuki or Kyo I just knew Hatsuharu was my favorite. As an adult Hatsuharu is still the best and I realize how consistent my taste is.

Oh I started watching kodocha after seeing some clips recently! I’m not as far into fruits basket yet but I’ll check out more there too ^^

Kor did a good job on the voice work.

I really got into Fruits Basket when there were about 3 volumes. Was in 8th grade at the time. I really liked the comedy of the series and the fun antics. It's onigiri analogy really touched me and influenced how I looked at myself. I ended up dropping it around book 12 (I think) when it was getting to be a long story, more serious and dramatic. Natsuki's style really changes through the manga's run and I really started to miss the older style later on.

This video somehow came at the right time since I just finished rewatching fruits basket after 2years.

comparing the ending of the original to the manga yeah. i was comparing them scene by scene for several other episodes as well and found it to mostly be faithful and in very good taste. i am excited to look more into the remake someday. i have a hunch that i will prefer the original series from what it adapts because i like daichi but its not a complete adaptation nor have i finished the manga so who knows the remake/manga could come out on top thanks to being complete

So I've been working on a fruits basket panel to possibly present at a convention someday, but it's really long and might not be able to be as in depth as I like BUT I also don't really have the video making skills to put it into a video essay unfortunately. I read the thread between yourself and Captain Kacke before I responded so I didn't reiterate a lot of the same points. I noticed in your video, you're using the TokyoPop version of the manga. I have the entirety of the tokyopop and it's annotated from me rereading it for years, but I recently started collecting the Japanese and the new Yen Press editions. The translations between Tokyopop and Yen Press are a little different, but without all of the volumes I can't give them very good 1:1 comparisons. In fact I think the Tokyopop has a little more charm to it. But the one thing the Yen Press edition has going for it is even more authors notes, especially so far removed from what she had said in the original manga run since the Yen Press edition is a translation specifically of the special editions released in Japan. I'm gonna try and break this down and not read all of my notes to you (also sorry if I spoilers, I'm trying to be vague!!) : 1) Where the anime ends/anime only ending 2) the remake is not perfect 3) "no one cares about the 2001 anime" 4) The tonal issues of 2001 1) When doing my research for this, I hadn't rewatched the anime, I was scorned by it years ago since some of my favorite characters and subplots never saw the light of day (at the time), but using the furuba wiki I realized I just entirely repressed the anime original ending? Tohru going to her moms grave, running into hana and uo, yuki joining in to help with Kyo, Akito bullying Tohru in the rain-- ALL of that was anime original, and I think it's important because later in the series, it's made reference to, a lot. Kyo literally yells at Akito "you weren't there that day, you don't know how scared she was," leading up to Yuki's divergence in the story to focus on the student council, he reflects on Kyo's extra curse and how he chose not to go outside when that scene happened. Kagura has one of her BEST chapters when reminiscing about seeing his true form as a child and being scared, but seeing tohru chase after him made her realize her love was one of pity and Tohru's was genuine. And speedrunning Akito and Tohru's relationship was weird, BUT all of Akito's story is end of the series side of things, and I have a lot of feelings about how that part goes and how it just makes Akito's character better in so many ways. Their relationship is part of the larger web surrounding the curse and Tohru's actual Akito relationship is one of the best things ever. 2) The remake isn't perfect. I even calculated it. It's a 93.4% accurate to the manga before the OVA (I have many other thoughts about the OVA too), compared to the mere 28.7% the 2001 anime adapts. In fact, if anything it's a perfect season two since it expands the story and characters and I think they did a great job with all of it. But Season 3 is rough. It's only 12 episodes, they cut out a lot, like not A LOT but like, one of the most important characters Komaki doesn't show up in the anime. I also think they relegated Katsuya and Kyoko to the OVA bc they didn't want the poorly ages massive age gap student/teacher relationship to ruin the anime however, it could have EASILY folded into it. Plus with Takaya's notes on all the characters from the later Tokyopop volumes, a few extra episodes could have easily been added as well to better flesh out characters Takaya herself thought didn't get enough time to really take shape. They also completely snip out so much context and build up between Yuki and Machi making Something Seem A Bit Out of Place and Rushed feeling. Overall though, very pleased with it. 3) Even though myself and others had a lot of bad feels about the 2001 anime from a manga reader perspective, before the remake, it was all we had. So of course I'd rewatch the ep with Hatsuharu in it or the first day of school bc they are so good and enjoyable, the OST even still means a lot to me especially the OP. Though I will say visually, the OP for 2001 is way weaker than say Prism or Home from the remake, I think ops make better trailers than trailers sometimes and while for fruits basket is so soft and nostalgic and there's a lot of visuals hidden in it, I don't show it to people bc it tells them nothing about the show. The 2001 anime is important though as you mentioned as it gained so much popularity in the US-- heck I still think about all my old furuba merch like my Yuki backpack that got me through junior high and the many t-shirts I had. Fruits Basket (and also Natsume Yuujinchou) came into my life at just the right time to better understand myself and my own trauma, and taught me empathy for others like not a lot of stuff can do. Plus the nostalgia is so hard, for the eng dub for 2019, almost the entire cast returns because people love them so much. Hiro's VA had to be replaced because puberty, and Akito's VA well...ya know. I think its great theses actors got to come back and work on a project that had so much love poured into it. 4)Though the 2001 anime did have some severe tonal issues. It's true, Takaya did write a lot of funny bits in the manga, and its true the 2001 anime adapted it, however, it felt like the 2001 anime had trouble balancing that with the extremely dark tones, which were only starting in the story, which makes for some severe tonal whiplash. This can be see really well in all the season/cour trailers for the new furuba how it slowly turns much more serious over time. I guess the way they did the comedy, which was funny as heck, really made the harsher parts (which I feel like sometimes they animated much harsher than shown in the manga????) so awkward and startling and kinda out of nowhere. And then right back to silly happy times. I feel like tone has a major impact on things too and most people do remember the sweeet and funny stuff more than the dark and traumatizing stuff (hence why I'd rewatch the funniest episodes of the OG). I feel like 2019 fixes this significantly. Anyway, thank you for your video, I got to learn a lot of stuff I hadn't stumbled upon in my research. Overall I really enjoyed it and recommend you do a video on the manga and 2019 anime separate from each other. This was a really interesting read! The Tokyopop volumes were all I had available physically, but I see now that the Yen Press scans are available on AB, so I'll definitely consider looking into them in the future. I wanted to go further into depth about the anime and manga, as well as Natsuki Takaya's previous works, but it became very obvious to me that if I wanted to get this project done at all I'd have to speed up my process and take my losses where it hopefully isn't as important as the main point I'm trying to get across. Tsubasa wasn't completely completely scanlated in English either and I think the scans I found online stopped including the author notes at some point. I did have the Japanese scans, but I think I got most of what I wanted from them anyway, and if not, then that'll also be something worth revisiting in the future. In regards to the tonal whiplash you felt while watching the 2001 anime, that's a trademark of Daichi's style. I'm sure it must have also been jarring to me at first but I know what I'm in for when I watch his shows now. I'd say his intentions with it for the most part is to catch you off guard for a split second by making the character falling or have something funny happening in the background during an emotional scene, only for the character to then pick themselves back up again to show their pride and confidence. I'm watching Kamisama Kiss right now for instance and there's quite a few instances where it does that. To me the effect it has on me is usually a quick chuckle followed by a warm smile. It's a feeling of triumph because you've come to love these characters and their imperfections as people. Tohru and Nanami are odd characters that sometimes think in confusing ways so it helps to highlight their humanity in a way that's cute and makes you root for them to succeed. I've seen many of his anime and I am obviously a huge fan so I've gotten used to it. I'm sure there are instances where it didn't really work for me either, but when it hits, it can make that scene unforgettable. His portrayal of sinister evil and depression are also very captivating. Akito had a strangehold on me whenever he was on screen. He was a terrifying force of nature. The way he turns the eyes completely hollow in anime like Kodocha is also very soul-crushing. Edit: I agree with you on the bit about the openings. 2001 is thematically rich and very striking, but a lot of the most popular openings from Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon slayer are high tempo tracks with lots of cool animation. If you put a bunch of people in an empty room with the 2001 and reboot openings playing, most people would gravitate towards the reboot because it's more immediately captivating and pretty. Not that that's a bad thing either, but yeah, that's probably what I would show people too who are completely unfamiliar and don't want me to explain the meaning of the original one in detail. On top of the op not being a very active and engaging one, I had a DVD from funimation YEARS ago (2 eps of samurai 7 and one ep of burst angel and kiddy grade) with tons of trailers on it, and I wanna say that was my first view of the anime was that trailer. However, for the panel, I couldnt find it on youtube. It's on IMDB of all places. I'm wondering if funimation just isnt a fan of it, which is surprising bc I think they released a "complete series special edition boxset" for the 2001 anime a solid 5 times in almost 15 years

Correction, that video was for my art of remake panels which I just presented at a-kon at the beginning of the month in texas. I cover all sorts of remakes in it and of course I wanted to talk a little about furuba. I covered hellsing vs hellsing ultimate, fruits basket 2001 vs 2019, osomatsu-kun vs osomatsu-san, cyborg 009 (the 1960s one vs 2001 but it had MANY adaptations), gatchaman vs gatchaman crowds and lastly dororo 1969 vs 2019. So I have a lot of strong feelings on remakes lol

Japanese society has a lot of emphasis on pleasing the greater group so I can understand why westerners have placed a lot more emphasis on a negative note about the Director and the situation that led to that actress getting blacklisted. I remember when the new series was greenlit that Natsuki Takaya had specifically said she wanted a completely different cast and crew, saying it was to honor the original. Most notably I think the composer Jun Abe had since passed away so asking for an entirely new production so the new series can stand alone made sense. It did not affect the english side though as a lot of actors reprised their roles (but not all). I think the humor of the first anime is where it shines. The music is another area. Both these things are lacking in the reboot and I felt that comedic timing and dramatic music queues were misplaced. But more than any controversy, the reasons Fruits Basket could not have a second season is the anime left out important manga details and added an anime only conclusion that made it impossible to continue. This is the price of making an anime before the manga is completed. I am a bit disappointed that you did not look into the creation of the second series for any signs of evidence for this falling out since I know that having an entirely new cast and crew were requested by Takaya. I appreciate all the research and information you did find for this though. I learned a lot.

Have you spoken with Natsuki Takaya-sensei [the Fruits Basket manga creator] about this adaptation of the anime? Did she provide any requests or comments that informed your direction? IBATA: The first time I met Sensei, there was this article going around saying that there was a trend of viewers not liking painful story developments in fictional works these days. “Will Fruits Basket be okay? I saw the reboot and didn't like it. It's not awful but there's way too muc drama, not enough cute moments between the characters. It was a bit depressing! Also, Yuki's voice is bad. He sounds bored all the time. This guy is calm, polite and kind not constantly bored. Kyo wasn't better, i could easily imagine the voice actor reading his text. Didn't help to suck me in the story when two of my favorite characters have no emotions in their voices ☹The original has a special place in my heart. It's short but really good and there's a good balance between comedy and drama.

I will always love the original adaptation over the reboot. Thank you for making such a wonderful and informative video on it!

the joke is making fun of the english dub for pokemon. specifically, theres a scene where brock (the guy who has his eyes closed all the time) takes out from his backpack what are very clearly japanese onigiri, but the dub refers to them as 'jelly filled donuts' which is rlly stupid lmao thats the reference

I know this video is rather old, but I just finished a rewatch/re-read of all the fruits basket adaptations, and I had some things to say after watching this video. I think that the original anime is truly something special purely for how unique it is, I love all of the visual choices that were made and I think that the performances from the original cast in both sub and dub have this sense of a raw and naive “passion.” It’s hard to describe, but in some of the sadder parts, even if I can say that the 2019 voices are more “competent” the 2001 cast has a tendency to make me cry just a little harder with their direction. Sometimes odd line reads were saved by the various interesting directing decisions or simply the raw emotion that the actors conveyed back in 2001, which still exists in 2019 but just in a more experienced way. However, 2001 also feels to me like parts of it were adapted badly. And I actually hate Daichi’s quote about Tohru being someone the cast were all meant to dislike at the start, which I feel is the exact opposite of her character. Sure some people have problems with Tohru, but I think it’s sort of uncharitable to her character to say that literally everyone is annoyed by her. I don’t feel as if that unfair read really bleeds over into the original anime too much, but there are certainly segments that I feel mischaracterize Tohru, which happens with everyone and is also a small issue in parts of 2019. Speaking of 2019 Fruits Basket, I think that it’s strengths lie in the experience that various people in the industry had by the point it was made. While Daichi has an interesting point about Anime being too standardized of a medium, I also think that the 2019 series is an example of a newer show firing on all cylinders despite its standardized nature. It’s no secret that the anime was a little rushed, and had budget problems (as well as Covid interrupting its production.) Fruits Basket 2019, even with its problems feels like a victory lap for all the joy of the story that Natsuko Takaya made. Putting the manga to a visual medium with some extremely competent direction and voice acting was all the anime needed to do and it passed with flying colors in my opinion. A lot of it is taken from the manga, but some scenes that never made me cry before, had me bawling like a baby with the added colors and audio which showed me just how special an anime can be even if it’s not taking the most bold and insane steps: it was still an amazing experience, and I think it held the story and the heart of fruits basket with an experience and reverence for the original that makes me feel like the staff similarly loved the original in the same way that the 2001 staff did. (Also the voice actors did amazing in 2019 even if I said 2001 had a different quality, I don’t want it to seem like I hated the 2019 performances because I actually prefer their performances a lot of the time.) As for the manga, I can only say that it’s the most “complete” version, and I love it for that. It didn’t suffer the cuts made from the 2019 anime or the shortened length of 2001, and I think that it’s beautiful to watch Miss Takaya’s process and art style evolve throughout the series. It’s sad to me that both of the anime series had to make so many cuts near the end of their runs, as I actually think that Kyo’s true transformation and the last 30 chapters of the manga are easily the best written and most interesting parts of the story. It’s always a little bittersweet to me that neither of those segments have ever gotten to be put to screen in the way I experienced them the very first time like so much else of the series had. Especially since when both of the anime did have the time to breathe in these moments, they were able to deliver them so effectively. However, I will always be thankful to fruits basket, even if parts of it are a little muddy or if the manga has some weird pacing and handling of certain things, it was a story that taught me so many lessons. It’s something that makes me cry every single time I come back to it, so much that I often find myself giving myself headaches while experiencing the story from too much crying. I’m thankful for every version of this show, and I’m so glad that an excellently made video like this exists. It’s one of my favorites to come back and rewatch, with its unique editing style and the depth of research that was done for it. So thank you to Hayden the Historian, like the story of fruits basket, you’ve given a new depth to multiple people and taken a truly unique approach to telling their stories. And just by looking in the comment sections, this has become a place where many people have felt comfortable and encouraged to share their stories and experiences. It takes someone truly special to do that.

thanks for the kind words! i still have not read or seen the entirety of fruits basket but i definitely agree with what you have to say about 2019 feeling like a victory lap. i have only found more evidence that takaya did not feel strongly towards 2001 since the publishing of this video, but i am happy nonetheless that the series was able to find a new audience in modern day. 2001 always held a special place for me which is why i made this video, but its a story i think everyone should experience regardless of how they go about it

I actually never knew that people said Miss Takaya didn’t like the 2001 series before watching this, and from an outside perspective I had never thought any of the adaptations of Fruits Basket seemed like they were spiteful of one another. It’s a story which I think works in many different ways which is why it’s adaptations are so important and interesting, as well as why there’s no “definitive version” in my own opinion. As you said, it’s a story people should experience regardless of how they chose to, because it holds weight and merit in every instance! (Also thank you for replying! It’s always nice to see someone who’s work I enjoy take that little bit of time to notice a fan!)

Your discussion about separating art from the artist is the exact reason why I don't feel all that comfortable about engaging with anime like Rerouni Kenshin. I remember watching the 90's adaptation of Rerouni Kenshin when I was 15 or 16 and really enjoying it for the most part. I even went on to read the manga. But it was literally right after I finished the series that I heard about the allegations made against RK's manga artist about creeping on young teenage girls. It didn't make me feel any better when I looked back in Rerouni Kenshin and found that Kenshin was 26 or 27, while his love interest was 17. It really upset me only just learning about that stuff with the artist after I had already gotten invested in the story, and I wondered if I was a bad person for the small part of me that really wanted to go back to enjoying RK and separating the art from the artist, especially when considering the ages of the main couple. That's why I haven't rewatched the 90's anime or reread the manga; nor have I allowed myself to watch the reboot.

The kodocha reference was iconic! I just finished the anime and manga. I have strong opinions about the story of fruits basket but I do love it, Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, Hatori, and Momiji are amazing characters with amazing stories. I love the original for its art style MUCH more than the reboot, though I do love the reboot for it finishing the story. However I much prefer the original anime SIMPLY because it ends before shit gets so painful and disturbing I can no longer watch. Shigure and Akito by the end genuinely made me sick to watch and are some of the biggest reasons I will never rewatch the reboot. But Tohru and Kyo especially will always be special to my heart

Love it. fruits basket is one of my favourite stories ever. I honestly deeply disagree and frankly kind of despise the conclusion, as it is imo a dangerous minimisation of the problem, but respect the level of research involved for the rest of the video.

I love Furuba, but I never watched the anime in full, because it aired on a channel that I didn't have on cable here in Brazil. Furuba is a bitter sweet story, the manga has it's ups and downs, I'm still avoiding the new anime to be honest because I enjoy the manga way too much. About Sakura, Harada and Rika's relationship is awkward and unecessary, I tend to ignore it while re-reading it, even as a kid I felt it being awkward, it wasn't a girl having a crush on her teacher, like many kids kind of have(I did have a crush on one of my teachers when I was 10, it's not that uncommon, the problem was that Harada also was “in love“ with her as well, if it was just a small crush, like Sakura with Yukito, it would be less awkward). Regardless, we always have to remind that bad people can do good art, it's a fact of life, and toxic people most of the time don't realize they are toxic because people are afraid to point that out and Akitaro being in a position of power, being male in a country that is infamous about being extremely sexist, would never realize that his actions were toxic, because it was too normalized to him.

i recall rika and teradas relationship being worse in the manga. even then, for me, its such a miniscule part of the story that im willing to look past it because its a comic book and not real life. i could certainly do without it though. the anime depicts it way better and i believe cardcaptors cuts that stuff out completely which can be seen as a positive

I think this may be a case of giving someone way too much creative freedom with something that isnt essentially theirs but its like what joe brumm (creator of bluey) made his character bandit say in a recent episode "when you put something beautiful out into the world..its no longer really yours" meaning that once something you make is put into the public eye its also being put out there for someone to swipe and alter it to make it their own and even if you dont like those alterations you really dont have a say in what someone else does with your creation once its in someone else's hands.

I love the original adaptation, i wouldn't knew the series if it wasn't for it, but i think is the worst of the 3 In the 2000s anime, Touru is more mommy, perfect girl. She is like "i want happiness for everybody". I feel like real Touru is "i want to be happy, and I have empathy, so i'll make everybody I care happy in order to achieve happiness for my own". And Kyo for the win, the 2000s is also more Yuki oriented... And the pacing the last episodes is awful! And the camera work questionable... The last adaptation has something with flying women that i dont get either, but i feel its a better adaptation

it's okay to not want to watch something because you disagree with the creator. To think critically is to look at something with your own thoughts, ideas and political views, and decide for yourself. So the problem isn't that people are depriving themselves of experiences because of virtue signaling, it's because people seem to be incapable of thinking for themselves

i remember this trash taste clip that demonstrated what im talking about pretty well. connor is talking about stumbling across a clip of the anime kite and thought it looked cool, but then he went down to the replies and there were people saying not to watch it and that it was "banned in norway for cp." in such a situation, the depravation comes from not engaging with the media in the first place, regardless if its actually true or not. you arent gonna look into it because you day could be better spent not worrying about those issues. the problem then is that it becomes very easy to call something out for problematic themes even if its based on a misinterpretation. chobits is the polar opposite of what many criticize it for yet it still has that reputation. i know the whole "madoka is torture porn" thing is very popular now too. Very frustrating because the movie is absolutely a classic and people who did the actual work should be recognized for it. I dont care about the dub. English also isnt my first language and in my country we watch everything with subs. So anime is watched in Japanese with English subs (subs in my language are usually not available. Certainly not in that time)

I loved both versions the only things i hate about it was the drastic story change, it not being completed, and yuki being voiced by a girl and sounding too feminine and akito being voiced by a man for a reason only obvious to those who read the manga in its entirety instead of being voiced by a woman sounding like a tomboy.

I was looking at some comments about Takaya and i wouldn’t blame her for being upset during that part of her live and the Anime side stepping import plot points

If you like something you can continue to liking it. It’s possible to separate work from the creators.

I can understand why you would do that, but why not just unlist them if that's the case? In my opinion charging money for videos which were ones free is a pretty odd decision. However, If you don't want to do that that's fine, they're your videos and I can't demand anything from you. But this was by far the best video about the game anywhere on KZread and was the only video I watched that taught me something I didn't already know about the game, it greatly increased my appreciation of the game and I will definitely miss it because of that. Now I understand it, your reasoning for doing so seems to be mostly based on your own personal experience (cost of the video and not being comfortable). I don't know the costs of the video or your feelings, so I'm not going to pretend like I have the ability to reliably judge your decision. But it seems you also agree that this isn't ideal, so it seems to have been a complex decision based on personal feelings, and if that's the case then I understand. It's your video at the end lf the day and if keeping them up publicy causes you distress for some reason you have the right to remove it from being publicy available. The video is still available for a pretty cheap price so I really don't have much of a problem. Uploading the interview sounds like a good compromise, it revealed a lot of interesting information and having that pay-walled isn't ideal because everyone should have access to that information in my opinion. Sorry if my message is a bit verbose that's just how I type.

The thumbnail is a little misleading--I thought this "problem" was the extremely poor resolution of the love triangle ("I loved you like a mother" my *ASS* Yuki), not the anime adaptation. Still, it was a very interesting watch for something I have never heard of before. I liked the original anime and the og opening song is something I still have memorized, despite how much I can't bear to interact with the story anymore.

the video is about how there are two sides to this story and thats what the thumbnail symbolizes. you arent entirely wrong with it being misleading though, its on purpose to get people to listen to a perspective they otherwise may not have thought of. glad you enjoyed!

Thank you. Yuki was lying to himself with that mother bs. 😭✋🏽. Be so frrrr. Yuki, you liked her, nearly kissed her (forgot the episode) but I was so disappointed when they gave us that ASS reason for why he didn't end up with her or stopped liking her. They just said that to cater to Kyo and Idk why but I felt empty when they ended up together.

​@@Kagomai15 the main controversy is still a touchy subject so if i was in charge of editing the page, i would not remove justins comment, however, i would add the context around the adaptation to at least prevent the misinformation that it was made in bad faith. it is entirely possible that takaya had negative feelings against it because justin does have industry connections, so its not like his words mean nothing. it is definitely a lot more nuanced than one is lead to believe from reading that wiki page though. but regardless if it gets changed or not, i have one of the bigger fruits basket videos on youtube, so its not like this perspective is invisible anymore
