It's not really historians, it's more the people who record history at the time it happens - when all you have to go on is official accounts and documents saying "yes of course there's nothing gay happening here, we're a good little christian country in the middle ages, our nobles are godly men", unless you dig up the dude's diary, you can't but speculate.

I love how the “Even French?” line in that context feels like it has some kind of history behind it... Like, that William and Thomas had an in-joke between them involving one of them trying to learn French but becoming frustrated by/impatient with it, with the other one affectionately teasing him for it, leading William to invoke that lighthearted memory/association to pretend for a second that things aren’t so bad in the circumstances they’re seeing each other again under.

"But wait, you have to eat the fruit to learn the language, right? So if our character learned the language..." Well, no. That's something the note from the priest mentions in passing. Eating the fruit is not an absolute requirement for learning the runes and "divine language". Think of it this way: Learning the Fae language is like running a computer program on compatible hardware, but the OS is incompatible. The main character, like the priest, manages to do it by slightly breaking their mind. Think of it like clicking your way through a whole bunch of "are you sure" and "this program is dangerous" boxes on your computer. It's not perfect, and the "program" might not run properly, but it works. Eating the fruit basically installs the Fae OS on top of your OS. Which means the "program" will fully run, no problem -- but your brain's operating system is going to be throwing exceptions left, right and center as it fights for processor space. Those people trying to kill you are basically undergoing a system crash.

I saw it such that he could comprehend the runes learned and described by the "cultists", but could not "learn" the rules from nothing, since that's a function of the fruit (It imparts the knowledge, but the knowledge isn't inherently UN-transferrable). Recall the fruit's effects end shortly after eating, or at least the sensation of knowledge does according to the first letter. This is important with faeries, since faeries are generally written to be contract-centric, and downstream "users" of the program never were subject to the binding terms, and aren't in privity with the fae entity who bestowed them. This is a way to get around curses associated with gifts, and why they're usually "forbidden" to share/teach.

Even the letter from William is dangerous in how frank it is. I feel like it would have been better and more teachable to accurately reflect the circumstances of being gay, in a historical sense. It's kinda sad if you think of it in another way, the eldritch fae bite William to give him a better life and thank him but a Christian avid hunter found him as a "deer" and shot him, but he thought william was a demon not the elegant fae creature he became. So he buried him beneath a tree, but when a mortal kills a fae nature weeps and their blood is absorbed and used as a poison to the land to punish the mortals. It poisoned their minds and souls. But if they have only choped down the tree and gave the fae a proper burial it would have stoped. Poor poor William his gift did not last long because of the greed of man Edit: also I thought they were speaking gibberish but their speaking fast combos of the runes weird. And I'm not painting the villagers as the villians, they simply misunderstood. the antagonist is the fruit and the humans who's greed over took turned them to eat more and force others to consume them. They killed those who refused to eat the fruit as well, so they are the antagonist due to their madness brought on by the fruit. The fruit and misunderstanding is the villian in this story. The villagers were merely human, and the fae was simply doing what it thought would be a gift to William it did not know the hunter would kill him and burry his poison blooded body under a tree. And the hunter was simple frightend just as William was scared to loose his arm when his bite got infected. And the his gift did not last because his gift became a curse when his blood tainted the tree.

"Maybe not French" I tried to learn French years ago and ended up changing schools, because I sucked at it so badly. My ex one night just randomly told me: "French is probably the most romantic language, but Spanish is just sexy French..." and I tunred to him and just went "So I have to learn both?" He laughed, but I was being serious. I would've tried to learn French again, if he wanted me to.

The Runes description, bc I loved this little game: Ku: This word carries with it the knowledge of all the cosmos whispered on the wind just quiet enough that I can not discern its true meaning. I must know more. Xo: When I utter this rune I can feel each beat of my heart sending ripples out through the cosmos. I can run my fingers through the flowing state of things. My life is a droplet of water borrowed from the ocean of existence. Ra: I must say I feel coy at the though of speaking this rune aloud. It's syllables send shivers trembling through my lips and down into my loins. I am filled with a firey lust and transported back to that night in London with William. I miss him so Gol: I do not care to speak this word aloud. It rips the breath from my lings and an icey chill permeates my body. I feel as though the dirt itself is trying to drag me down into an early grave. And then... Nothingness En: This run is raw energy harnessed in a single syllable. It is every reign of every king, past and future converging into a single moment. Even gods shall kneel vefore its wrath lest they be flayed from existence.
