The Friendship of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, 1964-1965

A brief video on Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali's breakdown of friendship (1964-1965).
Contents include pictures and footage of the two giants. This is a compilation of Malcolm X on Muhammad Ali.
I have taken the videos and pictures from the internet (mostly KZread) and made it into a micro documentary focusing on their relationship. I had the idea to compile these together on as much material that I could possibly find as this story is tragic since they couldn't continue their friendship. Both are heroes, Malcolm X as a spiritual/political hero and Ali as a sports/political hero. I always felt sad reading about the demise of their relationship which I believe could have been a great asset to the African American struggle and also Malcolm X as a guide to Ali the protégé would have been borne out of sincerity and in his best interest as opposed to the agenda of the Nation of Islam. Things were not this way and Ali sided with the Nation of Islam over Malcolm X. He was a young man aged 22, not to be blamed. Malcolm was aged 38 at the time. At the time of Malcolm's assassination he was 39 and Ali was 23. Later in life, Ali admits his mistake in his book published in 2004, The Soul of a butterfly: "Turning my back on Malcolm was one of the mistakes that I regret most in my life. I wish I'd been able to tell Malcolm I was sorry, that he was right about so many things. But he was killed before I got the chance. He was a visionary ahead of us all....I might never have become a Muslim if it hadn't been for Malcolm. If I could go back and do it over again, I would never have turned my back on him."
I hope you learn about the friendship from the video which shows a caring, loving Malcolm for his younger brother Ali. May Allah grant our beloved brothers Malcolm X, El Hajj Malik Al Shabazz and Muhammad Ali union in paradise, Aameen. If anyone finds more footage that can be incorporated, contact me and I will try including it if I have the time to re-edit the video. Thank you.

This is a lesson why it's super important to have your own mind. Both Muhammad and Malcolm came to blindly idolize Elijah Muhammad because he gave them racial pride. Being that Black men didn't have much else to hold on to at that time, I believe those lessons of racial pride became like a drug. And that's how Elijah Muhammad got them to become so devoted to him.. You have to be careful to not "follow" anyone so closely or blindly. They put too much faith in another FLAWED HUMAN, tricked into thinking he was some divine being! Doing so led to Malcolm's disappointment, hurt feelings because he was betrayed and shunned, and eventually his murder because he spoke the truth on the MESSenger. For Muhammad Ali, this led to him turning his back on someone who was truly genuine and who was trying to do the right thing. God knows this is one situation where I so badly wish I could turn back time and change how things played out... It's so frustrating how Elijah Muhammad got away with this.. in the physical realm at least.

At the end of the autobiography of Malcom X, Alex Haley stated that after an interview he has done with Mohamed Ali after Malcom separated him self of NOI Mohamed mentioned something negative about Malcom's actions and when Haley reported to Malcom what Mohamed Ali said about him Haley said that it was one of the very few times Malcom was very emotional to the point he started to tear up saying that he always felt like a big brother to Mohamed Ali 💔

Great post!! Thank you for sharing this video. I'm sure Ali was in between a rock and a hard place (loyalty or brotherhood) and it even broke my heart to see that he turned his back on an extended hand. However, I am at least relived that corrected his actions before he too was called home.

I love Malcolm and i love Ali they were fooled by the same devil Malcolm just peeped game quicker than Ali did. I wish Ali stood by Malcolm that was a beautiful combo at least Ali found out the truth later. I been a fool and manipulated and played a pawn to so i understand i just hope Malcolm knew and understood. Which I'm sure he did he fell for the same thing be aware of those in your circle. Friends family and people who claim to love you can cause you the most harm.

I'm glad you put this together. Another clip you could have included ... or if you want to edit and re-post, is a clip of Malcolm being asked during his conference upon returning from Mecca about Muhammad Ali. The reporters tell him that Ali has been saying some bad things about him, and Malcolm tells them that he still considers Cassius his brother and that he has nothing negative to say about him ... and that if Cassius has something to say to him, they can discuss it in person. Also, there is footage on KZread of Muhammad Ali saying negative things about Malcolm X after his death but before he'd left the Nation of Islam.

Muhammad Ali really had no choice but to stay with the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X was on a path that unfortunately led to him being assassinated, and Ali may have met the same fate had he joined Malcolm.

Resume Byron Do you think they knew that when joining NOI ? They joined with the belief of staying bc they saw their ideology being similar to that organisation’s. They viewed Nation Of Islam as a place where union and truth reigned but Malcom x (May he Rest In Peace) realized that Elijah Muhammad and his sect of NOI was a fraud and opposed them. Muhammad Ali didn’t believe Malcom’s declaration at first and later regretted not having followed him instead of Elijah Muhammad the liar. And Muhammad Ali left NOI as dis Malcom
