I hate when they remake a classic movie. They are never as good. Hollywood has run out of imagination. Just leave well enough alone.

I am still astounded how you managed to find all of these obscure little corners and nooks and crannies of where stuff was filmed. It's amazing.

Residents of Williamsburg and Bushwick know the sites well. We watched this film when I resided in B'klyn where I grew up. There were howls of recognition and surprise from the theater audience at the number of locations recognized by so many there. The most affecting for me was at 1:42; that area (empty lot on the left) encompassed part of a very old neighborhood on Hopkins between Sumner (now gone) and Throop. Besides a landmark German Lutheran church (later converted to a synagogue) being on Hopkins, my grandparents and uncles had residences on that street, with a good part of my childhood was spent playing out there on that quiet street with other kids; it was that kind of neighborhood. The hospital now on that site obliterated the church and dispersed the Hopkins St. residents. What's funny is that at 1:05 there is a side street (unseen) that runs straight at the Oasis Bar shown in the film, and it's on that side street where my grandparents ended up when they moved from Hopkins. From their new place to the bar was about 500 feet.

Allow me to tell a cool story I never thought I'd share... My father came home from shopping one day shaken and nervous. When my mother asked him what was wrong, he said while driving home he witnessed a car chase and crash, and men were shooting at each other by the elevated train. We found out after the movie was released my father was in the middle of filming that scene in The French Connection. I've paused the movie looking for my father's car, but never found it - probably on the cutting room floor. I saw a documentary on the movie years later and learned no permits were issued to film and the general public was not made aware of the filming. It's no wonder my father (and probably a lot of other people) was taken back by what he saw. A cool and true story.

Thats true! I read Friedkin didn't have permission to shoot the chase or anything during that scene!!! He was a gusty filmmaker. RIP Bill!

You’ve outdone yourself this time. You continue to be THE master of these types of videos. Perfect shot alignment, no unnecessary commentary and the music selections…I could just go on and on.

More impressive shot alignments! This must have taken a long time to do, as William Freidkin (RIP) shot the film all over NYC. Amazing to see just how much of the dirt and grime on the 70s streets has now been cleaned up and gentrified! Thank you for your hard work! Other NYC films that I would like to see you cover are 'Shaft', 'The Taking Of Pelham 123', and 'Across 110th Street'.

Also, I'd love to see The Panic In Needle Park for the dramatic change in the area; Klute; The original Out of Towners (😅) and Cruising, with those old shoots by the Westside meat packing district and the leather bars, the central park scenes. Speaking of Pacino...Serpico and even Dog Day Afternoon in Brooklyn. Oooh Marathon Man. Desperately Seeking Susan is 80s but the east Village is sooo different nowadays. Smithereens is a good early 80s nyc feel. I love that u did The Sentinal!!that creepy film is very underrated...how abt Rosemary's Baby for the city and Dakota?

I’d like to add in also as well Superfly and Black Caesar. both were filmed in New York and in Harlem.

Fascinating to see the old New York skyline with the Twin Towers under construction in some shots. Brilliantly done!

I’m absolutely knocked out in my shoes, I cannot believe not only did you found all these locations but filmed them so beautifully this is something that I’ve also tried but you take it to a whole level I’ve never seen. Would be the best location scout and continuity person in the film business. Very well shot too. Incredible

I love this, I find it fascinating that an architectural feature has existed for 50 years (although in reality a lot more from when it was originally created) and watched time go by unchanged. A generation has passed by, young men have become old, wars have been fought, technology has changed, the environment and global crisis'. Covid transformed the planets view of the impact of virri. All of this and these areas have just observed and you can go stand there where Gene was 50 years ago and its as if nothing has changed in many cases.

True. Because a lot of buildings are still standing. Like that area in Brooklyn where Sal and his wife owned a deli. Across the street in the factory, where Popeye and Cloudy were watching them come and go--that warehouse is still standing in the NOW section!

I thought the same thing, the permanency of the buildings and other structures. If those things could see, imagine the changes they would have witnessed over the years.. I was kid in elementary school when this movie came out and now I'm about to turn 65 in November.

I think thats the best then/now movie location film I have ever seen. The way you tracked with the film so accurately, too. Not only that it was so satisfying to see how unchanged most of the locations are. Over in England, lots of characterful places have been demolished from old films in the suburbs, which is a shame. Love all the early 70s American cars. They are an important "co-star" in the movie.

This is part of why I love NYC. The structures are so old and restrictive, even if they really want to gentrify it, it would be hard to without major, major overhaul. I like the grittiness and reminders of a time when things weren't so bustling.

Yes I totally agree with you. It was a different feel to the city back then. It's hard to describe unless you actually lived through it.

A fabuous video showing how New York has changed, and hasn't changed, in 52 years! The photographer had the knack of choosing the exact same location and focal length as the original movie clip.

A lot of foot work, pounding the pavement to recreate this shots. Well done !

The great thing about "The French Connection" is that just about every scene was shot on location and not in a sound stage

Architecturally the city hasn't changed much, cool seeing how big those skinny trees got

Wow! Great video! The French Connection is STILL one of the best (if not THE best) action thrillers of all time. I had an older cousin who remembers them filming the scene in Brooklyn chasing the drug dealer. He said that after someone yelled "CUT!" all three of the actors got off the ground and hugged and laughed. He also said he remembered all the camera trucks and lights around the area. He was 12 in 1971 when they shot that scene; at Grand Central to Times Square shuttle, I have a very early memory of that drinks stand where Popeye asks for grape drink--I must've been 6 or 7, when my mother took me to work with her and we stopped there.

52 years later and most of these places look exactly the same. Crazy.

I grew up in NYC in the 70's and left for the military in 1986. I went back in 2020 (34 years later) and wondered why I felt like I was lost, although I knew where I was going. I know you can't go back again, and this video showed me why!! Great job and I've subbed for more 🥇

I’ve never been to NYC myself (I live in the U.K. just outside London). What I wouldn’t give to be able to walk around 70’s New York. The modern shots just seem so clinical compared to decades before.

Amazing to see how much of NYC has changed and also remained the same .

Great coverage. Love the subway and elevated station shots where the structures are still the same! Another vote for the Taking of Pelham 123. I think the subway parts for that were for the most part unused tracks but the coverage on the surface streets would be cool to see. Also, The Anderson Tapes would be another great NYC upper east side . Another film with similar locations would be the Seven-Ups. I guess I should contribute to Reshoots!

This was well done filming the areas in the city, what a difference fifthy years make, many of the areas look cleaner compared to when the movie was filmed, saw this when it came out, great movie, it showed the good and the bad of New York, how many times I probably walked those street back then, ex New Yorker that was the city I knew

The best of this sort of thing I've seen. Fascinating. Amazing how similar much of it basically is; the location scout would probably think NYC had received a shave and a shoeshine, but not too much else, if suddenly dropped into 2023. This must've been very difficult, given that this movie was already notorious for being shot on every streetcorner in the greater New York area, including several Italian grandma's basements.

funny - I saw French Connection yesterday and now I find this clip. I have always been a sucker for movies like Bullitt and FC. San Francisco has changed a lot since Bullitt but it is nice too see how many location in FC have survived. Great video - thx a lot.

I really enjoyed this. I experienced the challenge and reward of doing something like this. I had a 1908 paint-enhanced postcard of a picturesque street where i live, for which i tried to replicate the scene with my camera. I was in the street, backing up to the "right" spot, and I felt a slap on my back that made my hair stand on-end. Turns out I had backed into a 100-year-old oak tree that the 1908 postcard photographer obviously had used as a landmark to take his picture when the tree was a sapling, and I almost believe that the 1908 postcard photographer "slapped me on the back" as congratulations about finding his picture-taking spot.😊
