The Free Tools I use to animate & why.
In this video, from my animation course website, I discuss the reasons I use the free Opensource software that I do, and why.
I use OpenToonz, Blender, Krita & Shotcut - all 100% free Opensource software.
I also use CorelDraw in my work as an illustrator, and this is a paid version, but there are free alternative vector drawing programs available.
I have an "Animating With OpenToonz" course that goes into this, and many other techniques and methods of animating using OpenToonz.
Animating with Opentoonz is my newest course, available later in 2023, and will cover everything an animator needs to know about OpenToonz, from setting it up, and all the basics, all the way to more complex techniques and tools that one can use to really let OpenToonz show its' power.
There are a few sections to the course, and it covers:
1. Basics - installing, FF Mpeg, Tools and workplace windows etc.
2. Drawing - the 2 main methods; vectors & raster, and how to use them to the full
3. Animating - covering the various methods and techniques OpenToonz offers
4. Advanced Tools & Techniques - we dive into some of the more advanced parts of OT
5. Extra Tips & Techniques - we look at some creative ways to use OpenToonz
6. Examples & break downs - we work through some finished animation examples, step by step.
The course is available at a 50% discount to it's anticipated price when it is finally 100% completed, early 2024.

Thank you so much for this! I'm a 2D artist who illustrate in cats & desserts, and would love to learn simple animations eg. coffee in a cup becoming a cat. Which software would you recommend to start first? Thanks in advance!!

Hi Heather and thank you for watching. There is a lot of free software available, but I have chosen to narrow it down to these few, so I can say I am a bit biased towards them. OpenToonz is great, it really is, but you can also animate on Krita, and it may be simpler. Some people say the learning curve on OpenToonz is steep, but I must say I didn't find that. Try a few, then maybe you will see what suits you. All the best with your cat and dessert illustrations! And thank you again for watching :-)

Great video, subscribed. I'm a complete beginner and am looking into all these free tools, I'm not familiar with all the terminology yet so which one of these three free programs would you recommend for something like bringing in a pre-drawn character and making it move its limbs/animate (I guess it's called rigging?) and simple lip syncing? Thanks in advance!!

Hi Anne, thanks for watching and subscribing. For simple or complex animation I would suggest OpenToonz as I know it well and know what it can do. It has a rather steep but once you get to know it, you will learn to love it! Keep watching, all the best with your endeavors and shout if you need any help. All the best 😊👋

The only one that I don't use on your list is shortcut - I'll look into that. But blender also offers a editing solution. But although it's not free At the moment I'm totally blown away by the painting program Rebelle, it's all what corell painter should have become if taken seriously. And at a much lower prize tag. Love what Jeremy Bullock has done with opentoonz in form of Tahoma2D making it much more accessible. Many of his achievements actually been ported into OT.
