The Sunsphere looks like the perfect place to put 16,000 boxes of unsold wigs.

I'll buy some wigs...
My knowledge on smaller Appalachian cities like Knoxville is very limited so I'll definitely enjoy your series on it!

what?
The studios of 104.9 FM in Knoxville are located in the Sunsphere.
Worlds Fair baby here!
finally someone talks abt it outside of the simpsons! i’ve lived in knox my whole life and nobody outside the city talks abt the sun sphere or the L&N train station (now L&N STEM academy a high school) it’s truly beautiful on an afternoon in fall. The sun sphere is a very popular location here in town it’s also vry useful to get around bc it always leads to downtown.😊

So they turned the old train station into a school? That's nice.
I liked it alot
Such great videos!! Keep it up!!
Nice
I live in Sevierville and when I go to Knoxville for football games or for shopping ( or something, idk) I always see it. Also I thought the gateway to the smokies is Gatlinburg? Knoxville is close enough I guess.
Good stuff! Knew nothing about this before.

I worked at the souvenir shop on the bridge just by the Sphere. The theme of the Fair was 'energy turns the world' and we had solar phone booths, and whatnot, so I never understood why the Sphere is not illuminated by solar lighting. At night, it just sits there in the dark......

Good point. I hate to say it, but it’s expensive to maintain and useless. Bar and restaurant was the best idea but it was ‘private.’ It could still be an awesome restaurant
in the 80's and 90's they did, in fact, make wigs here. They dropped them thru a chute into a loading barge that sat in the Fairpool, which carried them to the river. The Wig factory went out of business when fake hair became unfashionable in the 2000's. There was a saying: "worlds fair, fake hair, don't care" people from Florida and Georgia were very envious that Knoxville had this gem. Today, the site can be visited, but only if, you say "let's go Biden"
wow, crazy for the third most depressing city in the US
I clapped my first set of cheeks at the sunsphere
