Synopsis | Courage Under Fire (2002)
They are old men now, but they had barely finished school when they were called on to defend their country. In one of the critical battles of World War II, these brave soldiers, outnumbered and outgunned, inflicted the first major defeat on the formidable Japanese. These Kokoda heroes almost certainly prevented a Japanese invasion of Australia. But at the time their revolutionary tactics of engage and withdraw - which proved so successful - were misinterpreted by Australia's military top brass. For six decades these men have lived with a dreadful slur, that they were cowards. Now, finally, there has been vindication. Charles Wooley returns to Kokoda with the men who saved Australia.
