The Forgotten Treasure we found on an Unspoiled Island.Treasure hunting w/ Nicola White

We unearthed forgotten treasures lost centuries ago when we visited the island of Alderney in June 2022 after being offered the chance to do some metal detecting there. Over the course of 3 days Jim our host took us to acres of land which was once home to Romans, Celts, Victorians, Georgians and everyone in between. It was exciting, especially knowing that the land had hardly been detected much over the years. My travelling and detecting companions were Simon Bourne of ‪@Sifinds‬ and Clem Chambers of ‪@ChillBill1‬ . We were also accompanied by our host Jim, and Ed Staffin, who contributed the awesome drone footage to this video. Ed also has a KZread channel and you can find it here - ‪@edstaffin9036‬
As you will see we found some wonderful treasures between us and I would love to know more about the lion brooch (or is it a cap badge?) that I found. Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to what it used to be!
Not only is Alderney rich in history, but it is also a haven for beautiful wildlife. We visit Gannet Rock to see the gannet colony, thanks to Ed Staffin's super drone footage, and there is also wonderful footage of a baitball and dolphins at the end of this video. Dont miss it!
You can find out more about Alderney here:-
www.visitalderney.com/
It's the third largest channel island after Jersey and Guernsey, and it's 1.5 miles wide - and 3.5 miles long. Perfect. A peaceful place to escape the busy life of London that is for sure!
Thank you to Jim and Sue for being great hosts, and Thanks to my mud buddies Simon and Clem for being such great companions.
I use a deus orx in this video and highly recommend Regton metal detecting specialists if you want to get started in this fascinating hobby. They will give you all the info and advice you need:-

What an amazing weekend that was. So much history in the Channel Isles that isn’t appreciated enough. I must admit I didn’t realise the importance of Alderney and Guernsey during WW2 until I visited, thanks to Nicola for inviting me and wisdom of Chill Bill, and to Jim and Sue, it was a trip I’d never thought it take otherwise. • @TheFiown

For example, if you cut the grass yesterday, you might say, “I mowed the lawn yesterday.” Mown is often used as mow's past-participial adjective. So one might say, “The freshly mown grass looks nice.” But mowed is also sometimes used for this purpose.

I actually live on an island, an old British colony (Bermuda), and we are rather small ourselves - 23 miles long, about 1.5 miles wide at our widest point and 26 square miles of land in total. There are many stories from many visiting mariners from the earliest years who say that the reefs around the island were ringed with the decaying masts of sailing ships that had come to grief. Indeed, some of our most prominent families got their start by wrecking, in which they lured ships upon the reefs by lighting fires upon hills. I can only imagine similar things happened there lol.

Hi, Nicola. Susan here. I really didn't think you could top the drone footage from earlier, but that was amazing! As far as Mowed vs Mown, while the past tense is Mowed, you can have a freshly mown lawn. In French it would be the past participle. However, both seem to be accepted (especially in these days of texting phonetically!). My husband always say you don't mow the lawn, you coup de grace!

I've been on really off-the-beaten-track places in the American West (every US state and Canadian province west of my home in Wisconsin, including Alaska and the Yukon and Northwest Territories). Driving, hitch-hiking, biking, and hiking, sometimes miles away from any human roads, or even trails. There have been times when I've wondered how many other humans have stood in places where I have stood myself. Knowing that, since humans arrived here many thousands of years ago, I have not likely been the ONLY visitor anywhere, I think I've been one of very few in some really empty spots in the deserts, deep forests, and and mountains. But when I watch your videos, Nicola, and see the amazing things you and all your friends find, not just along the banks of the Thames (where humans have lived in large numbers for millennia), but everywhere you go, it brings home to me just how much history you stand on, no matter where you are. That's humbling, and wonderful. Also, no squizzle this week, but those fish and dolphins at the end were fantastic. That school of fish was much more fish than sea! Can you tell us what kind they were?

Hi Nicola, Wow how happy and delighted I were to see your wonderful Alderney video. It’s such a lovely magical, peaceful and very unspoilt Island, you brought me some very happy memories of my 1st visit there a few years back. I Camped at Saye beach for 3 Weeks, Swimming with dolphins & Seals at Sunset, so magical. Also took the boat trip around ‘Gannet Rock’ truly awesome Nicola, you must do that on your next trip , see the Gannets/Puffins close up🙂🙂 I’m pleased you enjoyed your stay on Alderney, wonderful drone footage by Edd, and Thank you from the ‘Gang’ for showing us your finds. And Thank you Nicola , for warming my Heart again with fond memories of my ‘Paradise’, there is quiet no other place like Alderney 🙂🙂❤️❤️

The drone footage was spectacular, especially the dolphins and the school of fish at the end. No thanks though for the ear worm of the Wombles of Wimbledon theme song - it was also popular in Australia. Come to think of it, the wombles have a resemblance to the blonde hedgehogs 😄

So awesome to see the gang back together with chill Bill Nicola and Si. The life of rich mudlarkers is a dream. I mean, come on, you guys are on a private plane being flown to a location that was pretty amazing. No one has ever really gone into this, but why on Earth do you all find so many coins in fields ❓❓❓❓ It's as if the people of old had constant holes in their pockets and carrying cases 🧐

  • @nicolawhitemudlark

    @nicolawhitemudlark

    Жыл бұрын

ha ha. Well firstly, it looked like a private plane didn't it, but actually it's not private at all. It's the normal Alderney plane run by Aurigny! It was kind of them to let me film them. Then for the money, well, that 's a good question, but if there were fairs or picnics or walks or runs or events or whatever, going back down the ages, or villages etc... money will be dropped. sorry, that's not really very convincing is it!

Cotton rots out and wears out quite easily, that's why old coins fell out of pockets and buttons fell off and are found in fields. Modern cotton, certainly the kind you get on reels has a polyester/nylon mix with it making it stronger.
