The Forgotten Maps of Thomas Jefferson

In welcoming a group of Nobel Prize winners to a dinner at the White House President John F. Kennedy jokingly stated “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

Great video and thank you for the detailed explanations. Ever think about the Maryland/Pennsylvania/Virginia boundary fights? I noted that although the Mason-Dixon line between Maryland and Pennsylvania was officially drawn until 1763, the disputed border is already on the older map in this video.

Cool video! I find it interesting Fry and Jefferson chose to snub late Secretary John Carter on their map. Walker, Lewis, Merriwither, Randolph (Edgehill), John Peter Salley, Robert Rose, Fry’s estate at Viewmont, and Jefferson’ Shadwell all make the map. Secretary’s Ford, Carter’s Mountain, Secretary’s Road are not listed. They even marked the location of Carter’s Mill just across the river from Fry but did not label it. Carter owned all the land between Fry and Jefferson including the future site of Monticello. Looking at others who are listed, I think there’s a personal or political reason Carter’s name was omitted and could be tied to the allegations brought against him.

The Fry and Jefferson map has 0 degrees longitude placed in such a spot that any disputes could be put to rest since you can re survey. The first survey was conducted in 1750 and It was updated in 1755 to incorporate information from the journals of John Dalrymple and Christopher Gist. Also of note both London and Currituk Inlet are given as meridians. This is the only map we've come across with such an obscure place for a meridian. State borders between Virginia and North Carolina are outlined in color.

Humboldt gave to Jefferson all the Maps and Padrón Data he extracted, copied and robed from México Institutions because the permit for the Contract Humboldt signed with the Spanish Crown ...so, you can imagine.... This map you shown here remember me the Ayllón Map of that area 1530 or so.... You can research if you want but ...perhaps, Humboldt is just a pirate and Jefferson just appropiate the intelectual properties and knowledges of some else.

@@Wotcher Yes, and Wendy’s should have resources available in everyone of their stores so that you can know the conditions that their animals lived and died in so that you can make a choice about whether to eat there. Some people don’t want to engage with violent oppressors from history at all and not giving that information violates consent, others don’t know about how awful Jefferson was and should know before anything else so that they know not to look up to him. He was an awful man and that should cast a shadow on every good achievement he made. Hitler wasn’t a good painter, but even if he was, those works shouldn’t be engaged with before everyone seeing them knows what he did and how awful he was. Racists, abusers and conservatives shouldn’t be allowed to have a good legacy, there should be no pride attached to their name and everything good that they could have done should be taken from them.
