The forgotten Man who freed Africans from Arab slavery.

After the successful execution of the revolution, there was widespread surprise about the person of the tough-talking 27-year-old Field Marshall John Gideon Okello.
In one of his broadcasts, he tells freedom fighters looting that
" if anyone is caught with a stolen bar of soap, he will be imprisoned for eight years"
In Kenya, early reports by Kenyan newspapers hold him as a Kenyan citizen.
But who exactly was Field Marshall John Gideon Okello? How did he end up being the face of the 1964 Zanzibar revolution, and why was he the most feared man across the east Africa region? Feared even by people like Idi Amin? Well, let's find out

Paralyzes progress indeed! Our tradition of oral story telling is among the main impediments to our development. We don't value documentation and don't even realize how indispensable that 'habit' is. Document, scrutinize existing body of knowledge, add it to it, remove from it, strategize, etc., etc.; we just don't get it.

I am a 28 year old Nigerian and I have read a lot about the story. Most of the info here is propaganda. John Okello was no different from Adolf Hitler. He was deeply racist, and had no qualms with shedding innocent blood. Scholars still debate whether the massacre he led in the Arab neighborhoods of Zanzibar could be classified as genocide. What is not up for debate is that it is a disgusting act. It is to the discredit of revolutionaries like Nyerere and Babou that they benefited from this crime against humanity.

Through "Nigerian eyes" a Christian overthrowing a Muslim monarchy violently "can never happen". Especially after the civil war, which wasn't inspired by religion but politics. The nation is still "licking it's wounds from that episode"! No one wants a return to those "dark days". This is noteworthy.

I had never heard of this Field Marshall, thank you for telling us this powerful and sad ending story of one of many overlooked African Historical figures.Field Marshall John Okello was a young charismatic leader who rose up against Arab oppression and won,but he did not have proper ideological training to have kept ideals of a Revolution in tact.So he let fame get to his head and became more a cult of personality rather than a full liberator. Speaking of overlooked Historical figures, hope you can do an article on Joshua Nkomo from Zimbabwe and his adviser Herbert Chitepo, those 2 were ones who laid the platform for Zimbabwe Revolution, they deserve much more credit than they get.

Sometimes, a man of war is needed to free his people, but that man must wait for a man of peace to build the temple. It's such a sad thing that Zanzibar's David and Solomon were so hostile to eachother, and that both would end up assassinated within ten years of their triumph. The world needs to hear their story, and you've told it so well. Cheers.

@@97digitalmedia67 So your thoughts on Okello who came to 'save' the slaves in 1964 (who'd been freed by the Zanzibaris under pressure from the British in 1897) have changed? A man who committed ethnic cleansing and was reviled by Julius Nyerere (and most East African leaders at the time). How about Zanzibar today ... used to be the main economic power in the region and now it is bankrupt (can't even provide electricity and water for its people without Western aid). The island employs Kenyans (rather than Tanzanians) in the tourist industry because most Tanzanians can't speak English (another misguided policy) ... things turn out well?

Very interesting. I'd heard of the Zanzibari Revolution but not of John Gideon Okello. The Zanzibari people were clearly better off without their Arab overlords, and - sadly - better off without John Gideon Okello, a man who would clearly have morphed into another bloodthirsty dictator given half a chance. As for Revolution, it's a perfect illustration of Auden's observation that: Those to whom evil is done do evil in return. The Sultan should count himself lucky he got out alive.

@@nairobinyeusi5811 good luck revisiting history but idk why you think whites are demigods to me as a person from Somalia when we don't even submit to white people and we shown it in our history from the Portuguese assault on Barawe and Mogadishu that was a failure for them to the most recent one in 93 by the Americans unlike you hosting colonial base inside your country ever since they conquered Kenya. Also your old comment said Somali ethnic groups are left over Arabs which isn't true because we don't even share DNA with them only faith. Somali is more related to Omotic people and the Amazighs in Morocco that are non Arab than Arabs. We even have clans with Indian origin than Arab in Somalia from before the time Africa separated from Asia. Horn of Africa is not only the cradle of humanity but has also cross road for humanity for centuries you get all types of people some with blue eyes and tall and dark with Tutsi like features the blue print is here and also we use our native languages as official languages too unlike many Bantu majority countries. I also condemn what my ancestors done to the Somali bantus no human should become slave or subjugated regardless of their skin color or race.

Which way some may view him he was a great African leader and revolutionary. I read about him in the DRUM magazine of those days in 1964 when I was in the primary school in Gusau Sokoto province of Sardauna days now Zamfara state where i was born and bred. He Led the revolution that drove the Arab slave drivers who had no respect for the native Black Zanzibaris. His name will soon be written in gold.

@@hakimdiwan5101 by not mentioning him in the history books they are merely distorting & relegating known facts into the dark side of history serving no purpose at all except half truths being propagated I tend to differ with you picture this hypothetically if okello were to be the ruler vs the Arabs in power which one would be a lesser evil?

@@khalid8850 An evil is still evil, you don't understand that children's minds are malleable, if you present Okello as a face of revolutionary leader then you would have future generation who would look upto him as hero. Nobody can say for sure whether he rebelled because he actually cared or wanted to be ruler himself. His acts of evil would be too gruesome to write in books and thus risk of showing just one sided picture of him. It's for this reason why we were not thought about Hitler until the end of our school days. I don't want to see a generation grew up worshipping people like Okello as hero. It's tempting to like some black African who stood up against colonizers but if they are someone who put Africans out from one slavery to another they are best left to be talked about when kids grow up.

@@hakimdiwan5101 Okello did good. We know the Zanzibaris got attached to those Arabs with Islam. That's why they always side with their slave master. Okello revenged for the Millions of Africans who got shipped into Slavery through that Island. What those Arabs did to Africans is 1000 times worse. Okello was indeed sent by God and African ancestors to Liberate that slave dungeon. The Zanzibaris got mentally enslaved by Arabs that's why they even hate mainland Africans to date but it's the main Land Africans like Okello who had to go there and Liberate them. Africans like Okello, Menellik2 & Mau Mau should be celebrated more by Africans than Nelson Mandela who was a Big Sell out. You don't spare your enemy.
