The Forgotten Hot Hatch? Abarth Punto Esseesse [Get Your Car Featured]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hot hatches are very popular in the U.K. and for good reason. They offer good value, the perfect dimensions for a British B road, good practicality, and of course, a healthy amount of performance. There have been many that have come and gone throughout the years, but there's a good chance you have forgotten about this - the Abarth Punto Esseesse.
A chap called Ryan got in touch with me recently as he owns such as car and bearing in mind I've never seen one in real life let alone sat in or driven one, so I was very keen to take him up on his offer. His example is virtually standard, but given the rarity of the car, I jumped at the chance to feature it on the Car Obsession channel.

Still a good hot hatch for little money! It would be interesting to see a test with the Polo GTI 1.8 (6C).

@carobsession You really should try the Abarth Punto Evo (APE) Esseesse too. I've had mine for four years and can't see myself parting with it any time soon. I can't speak for the Abarth Grande Punto (AGP) Esseesse as I've not had the chance to drive one but I can say that my APE Esseesse has never suffered from torque steer or scraping with four people in the car. I know of one APE that's running over 300bhp and that handles the power fine. The scraping issue is a strange one, I've not heard of anyone else with that issue in either of the two models. The AGP Esseesse is capable of much higher top speeds than the official Abarth figures suggest as they often understate these things. I've had mine up to 146mph on the autobahn in August last year and I've heard of another AGP Esseesse almost hitting 150mph. The Multiair issue in the APE is becoming much rarer thankfully, and they cost a little over £500 in parts. Some garages, especially dealerships often charge a small fortune for fitting the new unit, despite the fact it can be done by hand in less than an hour. Also, with the research that we've conducted in the Abarth Punto Collective group on Facebook, it has been discovered that only in rare cases can the unit not be repaired very easily in about an hour with almost zero cost . There's more info on this on our group. The website that Ryan mentioned (he's also one of our members) is Abarthpunto.co.uk which was created by our other admin, Lance. There's great info on there including buyers guides, common faults etc. The thing about Fiats being unreliable is a little outdated really. They're surprisingly reliable, but reputations are hard to shift. Look up stats on most reliable cars and you'll be surprised at where Fiat comes in the rankings. The main flaw and weak point about the AGP is it's M32 gearbox which as any VXR owner will tell you is prone to failure, and unless you upgrade numerous parts during a rebuild then it's likely to fail within about 50k or so, depending on power and how it's driven. The Sabelt seats are much comfier than you'd think. I have them in mine and they were absolutely fine on my trip to Italy and back. I'd be happy to show you my APE Esseesse if you like, as the Abarth Punto comes in two forms and they're very different. I personally prefer the more aggressive styling of the APE, but it's not for everyone. Everyone has their own tastes.

Hi Steve, thanks for watching and commenting. In regards to reliability, I had a 2001 Punto ELX back in the day, and speaking from experience, it wasn't overly reliable 😂

Yeah you will still get a few lemons, like you do from any manufacturer. But from an overall perspective they're far more reliable than they used to be, statistically more reliable than many manufacturers that you'd be surprised about. Before my Abarth I had a 2001 Mk2 Punto Sporting which was immense fun to drive, despite being underpowered, and was the most reliable car I've had. The only things that have gone wrong with my Abarth have been issues of my own doing 🙄😅😉👍

Man, you said it all but try make hard headed people understand that. I have a mk1 Fiat Punto. 1995. It passea mot untill today with NO advisories at all. 250.000kms and just does not have more cuz I am immigtated and I have been out my country on and off for a few years. I even converted it to LPG. Problems...ZERO. Just normal wear parts like any other car in the world. Fiat is my favorite manufacturer. Fiat does not give you status but gives you joy. You want to have fun with a Fiat? Get close to the back of a german car on the road..lol. the german car diver gets posessed. Fiat is far from being and unreliable car. One thing is a car not being reliable and another is the owners not taking good care of the car. Its just a matter of seeing how long Fiat has been in the automotive world. Fiat has always been ahead of other manufactures. All manufactures today use Fiat technology. Biggest car group. Car group that has wone more titles of car of the year and best engine awards. I would say it is the manufacturer that most engines are used by other manufacturers. 2nd most sold car in history. Fiat 126. Vtec system was invented by Fiat. Just wasnt called vtec. And much more things. I couldnt be hapier with my mk1 Punto. Had and Uno mk1 as well. Lovely car.

Gearbox can be a problem, listen for whines or crunches when changing gear fast. Think it shares the same gearbox with the Corsa VXR. Uprated bearings kit on eBaY UK. Abarth Punto Evo multiair system fails due to wrong engine oil being used when serviced.

@xennex in Italy the cost from 5000 to 7000€. A bargain compared to the 500 abarth and it is on another planet. The chassis is way better, 6 speed gearbox, more space and better brakes from stock. Only 100kg more and the same bulletproof engine
