The FORGOTTEN Aunt Of Anne Boleyn

When Anne Boleyn made her way to the scaffold inside of the Tower of London on the 19th May 1536, the second wife of Henry VIII had been sentenced to death for treason, incest and adultery. Her crimes are today considered falsities and untrue, and because of this she’s believed to have been a victim of her husband the King and his chief advisor Thomas Cromwell. Employed inside of the Tower of London with her in her final days were a group of women who some believe were loyal to Anne, but it’s most likely that these women were brought into the prison for a few weeks by Cromwell to spy and pass on any information that the Queen may have disclosed. This could then have been used against her to secure her execution. But inside of the Tower was one of her aunts who had been appointed to serve her. But who is this forgotten aunt of Anne Boleyn?

    When you said forgotten, I have studied Tudors extensively. BUT missed 'HER' thank you for bringing her out of the shadows, I love that after 40 odd years of study I can still learn new facets. Thank you, keep up the good work.

    Lady Shelton was Anne's namesake as Anne Shelton was born Anne Boleyn, the sister of Thomas Boleyn- Queen Anne Boleyn's Dad...

    @@brigittebeltran6701 thank you for replying. We have a very easy family to research as Shelton is a rare name. Part of my Shelton family are from Norfolk and they have an ancestral home Shelton Hall in Norfolk and also built The Manor House in Gt Snoring, Norfolk. With regards to Diana, my uncle married into the “firm” on the Fellowes side and so had close connections with the Spencer family.

    Marriage was a contract it was business and the closer your kept the marriages to the family the less land and money they lost. Family relations were only declared “wrong” by the church however if they had enough money the pope himself would turn a blind eye. It was all about business and profit

    Incest was more a factor of geography in the pre industrial age. If you were young in a remote area you would have little chance of meeting someone who isn’t related to you unless you were rich and travelled a lot. Only the first sons were rich. Marrying cousins is called endogamy while first cousin marriages were discouraged second cousin marriages were not considered taboo. Plus it was keeping money in the family for the Landed Gentry.

    unlikely that Shelton would beat Mary... one never knows when the tides will change and as a matter of fact Mary did rise to power it does not seem a very enviable job being in charge of Mary under the circumstances I feel sorry for all of them including Anne Boleyn, who only lasted about a 1000 days as queen consort ( hence the film Anne of a thousand days )

    Henry VIII was a peculiar horrible person but I do understand his popularity after the terrible events of the War of Roses a constant war of challenging succession and conflict over who was rightful king and the relief of the people to finally get a king who had absolutely un contestable rights to throne through both father and even especially his mother, final heirs to Lancaster and York houses. I can also understand his male heir obsession despite the horrible things he did to get one even though it does not justify what he did to the women around him especially his wives, it demonstrates also the terrible times and culture they lived in... the War of Roses, and of succession stemmed largely from issues of female-male heirs, with females having higher rank and males of lower rank having power... the whole Lancaster-York debacle and conflict was based on Yorkist claiming power through higher ranking female and Lancastrians trying to discredit the whole ability to inherit through female.

  • @kirpdeb

    @kirpdeb

    But it is primarily the male who determines the sex of his children but they blamed the women. Women were forced to marry men to increase the status their own family although they were not allowed to inherit money or titles. The King took mistresses and could have given him sexually transmittable diseases that decrease his fertility. The whole history of women is just despicable and tragic.
