Seen one on the road the other day and thought to myself it still looks ahead of its time.
I bought an i8 a couple months ago. Best decision ever! Some people say it’s not super car quick. But I don’t care. It’s quick enough for the public road, it looks stunning and it has the running costs of a city car. I genuinely got just over 70MPG and a range of around 480 miles if driven carefully. And with the cost of petrol, a full tank is around £67 and that’s with Shell V Power costing just under £2 per litre. And the fact that you can now buy a mint version with under 20k miles like mine for under £60k is such a bargain.

That's the thing. Fast enough for road use. If you don't ever plan to track a car, poring over stat sheets and worrying about what others think about your purchase are absolutely useless. the i8 is totally fast enough to have fun in, looks the business, and it is at this point absolutely a value proposition and a half. Damn... now I want to get one. lol

No it really isn’t, trust me. I was thinking the same thing until I went for a test drive, and it’s astonishing! The i8 isn’t perfect, I noticed a couple of problems, it does have a slightly firm ride, the boot and back seats are tiny and the gearbox when driving in comfort is a little jerky at low speeds. But the i8 is not a boring car.
@HassTahir

The only thing I would say if your serious about buying an i8 is do your homework! You do not want to end up with a bad one, as it is expensive as hell to fix. Buy one from a main dealer with a warranty included. It may cost a bit more, but it’s peace of mind. A week after I got mine, the window regulator was faulty and the gear lever light was also not working. Took it back and got it fixed with BMW under the warranty with no hassle 👍🏼

I want one so bad. Did u get the hard top or the roadster
I rented an i8 over the weekend and I want to give my truly honest perspective. This car is drastically misunderstood in the wide scheme of what it is and what it delivers. It receives hate because of its powertrain, but the powertrain is what allows a lot of people to own something that's outside the class of McLaren or a Lamborghini. Sure, those are amazing cars with a very driver-centric feel and deliver the true supercar experience. The powertrain allows you to own the car with much lower maintenance costs than the exotics that it competed with at MSRP. It was much easier on the wallet that way. Was it great with acceleration? Not really. It did pull you back so you did feel something fun though through the eBoost torque. Absolutely incredible in the canyons. If you don't care only about straight line speed, then this is an amazing drivers car in the canyons and mountain roads. Brings a smile to your face. Very planted, very predictable. In the way of it being a daily, it can be done if you're not concerned about too much space. The fuel economy is crazy and you can practically live off just the eDrive mode alone if you're going to and from work within your city. But I wouldn't necessarily say that this car does not deserve the "supercar" title. This car doesn't really compare with the exotics in it's original MSRP range. This is more like a comfortable GT style car that allows you to live under the supercar status of someone who owns one of those exotics for less than half the price. The way that this car makes you feel while you're behind the wheel, approaching it, and leaving it is a whole different experience than what you're used to in a normal car. During the time of renting it, I had people pulling out their phones rolling down their windows yelling at me how crazy cool the car was, and coming up to me and asking me if they can have pictures in it. I even had someone come up to me in the gym expressing how cool the car was while it was parked out front, and how it was the most interesting thing he'd ever seen in his 65 years on this earth. This car is a unique bridge between being able to live under the supercar status without having to pay the exorbitantly high supercar price tag. It absolutely was not worth the original MSRP from when it was released. I see why no one would have ever thought twice about not buying that car when it was new. Is it worth it for around $50-70k US as it is? Absolutely. Would I buy this as my daily driver? Probably not. My Audi S5 is a lot faster and a lot better as a daily than the i8 was. But the i8 delivered something special. It made you feel a way no other car in it's price range could and nearly holds its own class and in it's depreciated market state. It's incredibly worth it. I would definitely own it as a second car alongside my S5 one day. Sorry for the long rant, I just wanted to be completely transparent! Hope this helps if there's someone here unsure about how to feel about the car or if you're in the market for one.

Nailed it! Love my i8 Roadster and agree with Every Point you said. Its a Keeper and Prices are already picking up!
Bought a i8 3 months ago at 20 years been my dream car since 2014
I traded in my 2018 M4 competition for an i8 last September and don’t regret it at all. Yes the M4 was quicker but the i8 is quick enough for me still. It looks great, is free Road tax and I get around 45mpg in it, it’s a great car. Only thing I don’t really like is the front windows don’t go all the way down into the door 🤦
In terms of "BMW didn't make much money on these" is very true! It was an engineering project for BMW. It cost them £250k to build each car!!! And a top spec version brand new maxed out at £130k!!

That’s insane!
I thoroughly enjoy the I8! Drives great and looks amazing ! Still gets loads of attention. This is car is quick regardless of what some people say. The numbers are basically the same as a C7 corvette and no called that car a slouch.
Cool to see you at a fresh automotive location TGE. This dealership has a varied stock indeed. A fun drive and great to see more of the country. Thank you!
I've got to say that I never thought that much of the i8 but they have aged so well and now look epic! My pick of the bunch would be that glorious 355 Spider!! 😍 One of my absolute dream cars.... So Tom, please buy it! Would love to see it on your channel! 🙏
Don’t worry about the i8, get the 355. Stunning.
The I3s yes I remember that! And what a car the I8 is, I mean it’s just so so nice. I wonder if BMW will ever make a updated version. It is a BARGAIN. Everything is just so nice, the exterior, the interior. Winning.
Love these !!

Another amazing episode Tom, thanks for that.. I remember the top gear episode where Clarkson actually drove the i8 against the m3 of the same era and at the end he picked the i8 over the m3 and if you properly think about it that is bloody amazing..
Smashed it again Tom with another awesome vid. I've toyed with getting an i8 for a few years. It's a weapon with head turning looks. When are you doing another road trip? Would be great to see a vid of you and the guys over in Dubai, playing with supercars and riding dune buggies! 👍
A rare car that still turns heads today, always liked them but what a pain in the hoop getting in and out if it was a daily, remember sitting in one in the showroom years ago
One of my favourite cars, I think they’re definitely slept on. That said I’m not entirely convinced on the rear diffuser/bumper setup.
Had one on loan a few years ago, took it to the NEC and actually met you in person. They are a great car, fair play.

I love mine, I got a 2018 fully maxed spec BMW i8 in pearl white with the grey details. 20,000 miles for £52,000 from GVE London. It's everything I want from a sports car... fun, quirky, head turning, fuel efficiency is amazing and had enough luggage space with the back seats. I wish the interior was more fancy but it's still very nice
I've always loved them. Still looks more modern that today's cars. The problem is we're in an age where power is everything to most people so the stats never made sense when new when considering the price. Now as a second hand purchase, it is amazing value for money. Future classic potential is real.
A lot of people are quick to knock the i8 and point out it isn’t a proper super car. I don’t think it was ever intended to be, its more of an eco car that really looks the part is fairly swift. Its aged so well too, arguably better looking than the current offerings the last time I went to the BMW showroom. Personally I can’t afford a true V10 super car or run it for that matter but at 42K I was able to get a nice clean i8 two years ago and possibly due to the fact they only sold 2500 in the UK the price is now in the high 40’s and that makes it a really great daily driver. I you like the look of them I would defiantly recommend you try one.
The i8 was just an experiment for BMW in hybrid and EV. They now have the experience and real world feedback. Was ahead of its time. Now great value
I'd have the I8 roadster over a Tesla any day of the week.
I remember first seeing you on camera when you picked up your black g wagon with a massive beard lad haha, can’t remember who’s Chanel it was on- think maybe SOL? How you’ve changed and developed, good on ya brother
Great video - that Camaro is unbelievable 🔥😍

it is a third world cuntry, thanks to mass migration and getting ourselves involved in a stupid war with Russia over a pisspotical far right cesspit called - Ukraine. And thats why I traded my V8 and V10 6 series for an i8 😁 Because I dont want to contribute any of my road tax money to buying depleted Uranium shells for the 4th reich. Not when we're woke as hell here 🤣 i'll contribute to the cause.......when they recruit Azov to drive the migrants from our shores (won't happen)
Tom that Vantage looked immense, very compelling in the right spec too. Love the i8 👌👏 would be a great addition to the Exton Collection
Agree - I have had 3 i8s and own a 4k mile Roadster. In 2021 Autotrader had 234 coupes and 67 Roadsters - in Feb 23 just 123 coupes and 20 ROADSTERS. when they get to 6 or 7 cars values skyrocket just like my SLS, Z8, E46/CSL 996.1 gt3 did....get one now while just over half retail as they'll be back at retail in 5-6 years and twice retail in 10-15 years ! Was going to say hello at the SH/50 grand if I'd been around - I came up with the outline show format for Joe M in 2018 btw.

I was there for the press release on the 6R4 before the RAC Rally 👍
Never considered one of these, now this has got me thinking 🤔
The misunderstood car. BMW wanted to do something on a Level of a Porsche Carrera at this time. A futuristic Sportscar with the same power level and performance. - Because of the look and the doors people put it into the Supercar class - for which it was of course to slow. Just that it was never intended to be one. Nevertheless it made it overall less desirable at the time.
"Supercar"?? Where?
The i8 has always been a huge favorite for me, since seeing the original concept car at Frankfurt motorshow back in 2007. I have sat in about 10 different over the years, but have never driven one (I have driven a couple of i3 though and it´s always such a blast!). BUY IT and prove that this is a really cool car!
That classic 911 is just a beauty, absolutely love these cars. Personally have to agree the styling of the i8 has aged very well and till date doesn’t seem very dated

Hi Tom another grest vlog, did u bid on the blue lambo at the historic sale.
BMW lent me one of these when my M135 was in for service. Proper fun thing and more relevant today given fuel and environmental concerns.
Loved these since the first time I saw one at BMW Vancouver and an actor friend of mine bought one, loved being in it. True super car looks and performance for what? Less than the price of a base vw i5!
Idc what anyone says, hate on this car all you want, its so beautiful. Only thing that scares me is all the warranty stuff
@HassTahir

It’s not as bad as people think. I bought my i8 from a main dealer with BMW warranty included for 12 months. A week after I got had a fault with the window regulator and the gear lever light. They replaced the gear lever with a nice brand new one and fixed the regulator no issues under the warranty. A warranty with BMW for one year costs just under £1400 without breakdown, I get breakdown cover with my bank so it doesn’t matter. Considering how complicated and expensive it costs to fix that’s not bad. I will certainly be renewing the warranty next year 👍🏼
Absolutely not i8 forgotten for a reason, I’ve driven one and got nothing from it but £50k , is it a supercar

I'd love one. But the problems with head gaskets or the well known A/C fails that can happen ( not every car, but not super rare either ) frighten me. What happens when the battery comes to the end of its life ? Can they be replaced ? If so, would that be £20,000 ? More ? Note : I know nothing. But I too think they are an amazing machine, with useable performance and great MPG.
I’d only endorse your buying of the i8 if you did something cool with it that made it seem more metal. Because it’s very much a pseudo supercar in many ways, but I think it could become a very cool proposition if you commit to modding it into something good
