The flooding of Zeeland "Watersnoodramp" (NL) in 1953 as never seen before in color! [AI] Part-1

In the night of Saturday 31 Januari to Sunday 1 February 1953, the Netherlands witnessed one of its worst disasters in recent history.
This disaster is refered to in Dutch as "De Watersnoodramp" or "De Februariramp", and initially was also known as the St. Ignatius flood or Beatrix flood.
The flood was the result of a combination of severe storm from the northwest, with an unfavorable coincidence of high tide and spring tide.
As a result, the water in the funnel-shaped southern North Sea rose to extreme heights. The highest water level in 100 years was measured in Flushing, Hoek of Holland, IJmuiden and Harlingen, respectively 4.55, 3.85, 3.85 and 3.85 meters higher than Normal Amsterdam Level (NAP).
Many dikes were flooded and breached. Entire islands and regions including towns and villages were flooded. In total 1836 people perished, 300 farms and 3000 homes were totally destroyed. No less than 3000 farms and 40.000 homes were severely damaged. 200.000 hectares of fertile farmland were innundated. At the time the total damage was estimated at 1.5 billion Dutch Guiders (over 6 Billion Euros in today's money).
The original films have been motion-stabilized, restored, enhanced and colorized by means of the latest Artificial Intelligence video software.

My dad was a British Royal Engineer and helped with the disaster for which he was given, and still has, the Certificate of thanks from the Dutch Royal family. I will bring this attention to him to look at later.

Thank you to your dad for his service in the fight against the flood of '53. I am from the island Voorne-Putten which was among the severely flooded areas. 21 people died due to the flood in my village. A whole family (except one boy) got swept off the dyke while they were trying to reach the highest point in the village, where all the village people gathered. My grandfather only just bought a house and I've heard a story of him witnessing or helping the corpse of a young girl get recovered. She was stuck in the mud even below the creek that ran next to my grandfather's backyard. A commemoration is held every year. This year they went to the local cemetery to commemorate all victims of the flood by visiting the graves of those who drowned or got crushed. They stopped at the graves of the young family that got swept off the dyke, to play a hymn. The surviving son never lost his trauma in his life. You can hardly imagine the immense grief he must have gone through, even in his later years.

I'm English and was born 12 years after this flood. The same flood affected many areas in Eastern England and there was a collective memory about it - it happened after WW2, so the human impact was naturally compared to the war. For some reason, part of my eduction in England also focused tremendously on Dutch sea defenses and I'm quite knowledgable, and also fascinated about the geography of The Netherlands. I have NO idea why my formal English education in 1972 at the age of 7 focused so much on Nederland geography!

Wow, I did not know this had happened. I visited all the places you mentioned as a 16-year-old on a school trip to the Netherlands (from Germany), in the 80s. Hard to believe only 30 years earlier it had been devastated :( I look forward to the video!

Thank you for these heart touching pictures showing me again how tiny i am. bringing this human catastrophy back to my mind with these impressive films which gain even more presence thanks to your work of colouring and editing, which is an enourmous labour in its own, reminds me to whatever i think is well man made and usefull in daily life is in danger at any time by the forces of nature around me, as flooding or like it just happened the earthquake we all heard about these days. At the same time the films show the enormous power of people rushing to help survivors and rescue so many souls. Thank you again.

What a contrast it is between the beauty of the sea, and then the horrifying devastation it left on the land. All those lives lost, both human and animal... all those houses and farms. It's unfathomable. Thank you for sharing this video!

Wow, very well presented. My dad was just 7yrs old when my grandfather booked passage on the Van Dam ( not sure of the spelling ). I believe they were in the North Sea as this storm was going on. Grandpa never showed the least bit of fear on that ship, my dad & my aunt (6 yrs old then ) wondered how he couldn't be scared. Years later, long settled in Ottawa Ont., my grandpa admitted to my dad & aunt that he was scared witless, he thought he'd booked passage only to his wife and two young children go down with a sinking ship in that storm. He thought they never see Halifax Harbour! Keep up the good work!

Thank you Rick for bringing this in colour. Comment: the Dutch would not have "celebrated" the event, but "remembered" the event - different connotation there.

  • @Rick88888888

    @Rick88888888

    Жыл бұрын

"Remembrance" could have been better, but "celebration" does not per definition imply a happy event: Collins dictionary: "1. to observe (a day) or commemorate (an event) with ceremonies or festivities · 2. to make known publicly; proclaim · 3. to praise widely or to present to". The same applies to the word "Anniversary".

I was 5 yrs. old when De Ramp happened. We lived in Bergen op Zoom, where our father was stationed, after we returned from Indonesia. As kids we knew he was gone many days, being in the army, but couldn’t understand why though. Now we know the army was detailed to help with the rescue. With global warming these disasters are sadly occurring more often, globally. Woon al 62 jr. In California, I appreciate Rick’s videos, especially the ones from Holland and Indonesia, hartelijk dank!

Zoooo jammer!

@@Rick88888888 As a hobby, I process severely damaged vinyl and 45s and I lose a percentage of definition as a result. But I enjoy hearing those rather than the damaged originals because I believe it is a more accurate representation of the recording. So I don't understand their reasoning. It's not like you're destroying the originals. You would be giving the public a much more familiar viewing experience seeing as most of us grew up with stable color video. I find it much easier to connect with the time period watching a speed corrected and colorized version. I would say that your versions of these films is more historically accurate in regards to content rather than the film itself. Looking forward to more with your new software.
