The Flexshooter Pro Unbiased... Better than a Gimbal for Wildlife?

Here are my impressions of the Flexshooter Pro.
IT IS NOT A GIMBAL!
Is it better than a gimbal?
Possibly, if you want a light, compact, and very versatile head. But if you are looking for smooth panning and tilting with independent control of each axis, a gimbal might still be the right choice

This is a fairly late comment as I’ve only recently discovered your channel. FWIW, I’ve really enjoyed the videos I’ve seen so far. In general, I’d say your assessment after just a few days of testing relatively closely matches my opinion after using it for about 2 years now. I primarily use a monopod with the Wimberley monopod gimbal. But when using a tripod, I used the flex shooter for a few years. I was pretty happy with it and used it in a variety of circumstances - song birds, raptors, raptors in flight, surfing, kite surfers, larger animals, landscape/scenic shots, even astrophotography, etc. I was really reluctant to go with a standard gimbal, as they just seemed too large and bulky since I was often hiking to my locations as well as traveling on airplanes and just didn’t want the bulk and weight of most gimbals. Also for context, I shoot primarily with the Nikon 800f5.6 and 600f4, sometimes the 120-300 f2.8, so large and heavy lenses. I was surprisingly happy with the flex shooter. However after several very frustrating days shooting Peregrine Falcons, I found myself looking for something better. The problem was primarily the range of motion, as you alluded to a bit in the video. Often I wanted to start tracking them when they were very high or low. I didn’t actually want shots at that time, as those aren’t very “interesting” in my opinion. But being able to track them until they got into an area where I felt I could get some interesting photos was extremely frustrating with the flex shooter. I finally relented and rented a Wimberley WH-200. After using it for a bit I was lamenting I hadn’t tried it sooner. It made my Peregrine sessions so much easier. It also made my surfing and kite surfing sessions a lot easier. The fluidity and ease of motion was noticeable. I ended up finally buying the Wimberley. Now when I want/need to pack light - I still opt for the flex shooter. But if size/weight isn’t as much an issue and I want more comfort and ease-of-use I go for the Wimberley.

Very fair and objective. I have the Flexshooter Mini which has a 21lb load capacity and only weighs 1lb. I am that shooter that you talked about... doing travel, landscape, etc. but dabble in some wildlife (with less heavy lenses than yours) and for me it works really well. Always considering whether to buy an actual gimbal also... and you are the first person I have seen that has really been objective. Lots to think about.

Huge fan of the Flexshooter Pro. I keep one on a tripod, one on a monopod, and have a third dedicated for a floating hide/ground blind. The version with the quick release lever is much better than the knob version as far as quickly getting the camera on and off. I do wish they would change the silver knob to a bigger knob with less turns for adjustment. Happily sold my Wimberley head.

As the designer of the Flexshooter heads I’d like to say thank you for this presentation, I’d just like to add something. We state in our commercials that it works like a gimbal. As we state everywhere, you need a low profile lensfoot for that. The factory foot is ridiculously tall, the balancing springforce needed would be so high that the operation of the unit would be uncomfortable, especially with smaller lenses and cameras. That’s why we hold a line of low profile feet. The tripod-ballhead-photogear combo must be a harmonic system, doesn’t make sense to elevate the lens high above the ball. With a low profile lensfoot it is working wonderfully, moves effortlessly, stays in any position without tightening, which I don’t recommend anyway.

Love the reply and thanks. But regardless of the profile height wont the center of gravity always be above the fulcrum? So a lower profile with help lower this but can never remove the inherit design? If I ever talk about this again, I will be sure to mention it. I plan on a video soon that will mention the flexshooter as an option for wildlife and discuss the advantages/disadvantages of several systems (gimbals, fluid head, ball head, flex shooter)

Have had the Flexshooter Pro for a year now. Have an RRS Gimbal. The Flexshooter has been great for trips to Africa and Alaska where size and weight are a major consideration. It can mount easily on a beanbag or clamp as well and does not require anywhere near the space in a tight safari vehicle that a gimbal might. Has also been great backpacking in the mountains for the same reason. Only time I really reach for my traditional gimbal is when I know we are headed out to the coast or local wildlife refuge to shoot lots of bif.

Thanks for this very good review Scott. In my opinion, there is one more important "con" difference when compared to a true gimbal: When you tilt the setup up or down, the camera (viewfinder) will travel much more than in a gimbal, because the lens is mounted above the rotation center of the head. In a gimbal lens are tipically mounted aligned with the rotation center og the gimbal. This extense traveling of the camera can place the viewfinder so high tht one cannot reach it or so low that one needs to crouch down to look into it. Nothing different from what happens with a ball head, and that is the main reason why I still prefer a true gimbal head.

Thanks for an excellent and detailed review. I have both the Flexshooter Pro and a Wimberley WH-200 and I use both in different situations. I really liked that the Flexshooter Pro has the built in levelling base. It meant that I could remove the Gitzo levelling base from my tripod and therefore save even more weight. I also found the Gitzo levelling base a bit of a pain to adjust.

  • @TomReichner
    @TomReichner Жыл бұрын

There is another advantage to a true gimbal that was not mentioned: With a true gimbal, you can adjust the height up to 6". This is a great feature fo the gimbal, as it means that for slight height adjustments I do not have to mess with adjusting the length of the tripod legs (which I hate doing as it takes for freaking ever). With a ballhead or the Flexshooter Pro or the Uniquball, there is no way to adjust the height of your lens at all, short of actually having to change the height of the tripod legs. This is a big win for the true gimbal heads.

I have a gimbal, but in about six months will be going to Costa Rica on a photo trip and am very concerned about the size and weight of all my equipment. I will need a gimbal and a ball head, per the organizer. I watched your review some months ago, and other reviews, and I just bought the flex shooter pro with a 30-day return privilege. After an hour of fiddling with it, I think it will work out well for me. I agree it doesn't have the smoothness of the gimbal, but it is much smaller and lighter for travel, and does do the job of a gimbal and a ball head as you noted. It has been helpful, now that I purchased the Flexshooter Pro, to watch your review again. You did a terrific job on it. Thank you!

Good review. Thank you. I prefer for my work.. landscape, wildlife, birds in flight, air show and car racing a video fluid head. I had a Sachtler and switched to Manfrotto 502, because Kirk sells a conversion plate for the top of the fluid head, and you can change the direction of the Acra mount 180 deg. and is lighter. I like the counterbalance and the adjustment of friction. I use the Leofoto tripod LM-404 CL 4 serie and extra-long. (2135 mm ) 4 sections. I use only 3 sections but when I need, I have one more for extra length. This combination works best for me. One head for everything. Good for travel. .. Sold my Gimbal head and never go back.

Great review! I own a Katana Jr and the Flexshooter pro and you are spot on as far as how they differ. If you use long lenses and need to lock it down for precise framing without any change in your aim point Flexshooter does it better than any gimbal or bullhead that I have tried. The Flexshooter just drifts the least. As you have stated they are similar but each has their advantages. I can't bring myself to part with either system because I use them equally. Thanks for all your well thought out reviews, well done again!

I'm considering the Flexshooter for exactly the features you describe: a pan and tilt system with built in leveler. It is definitely not a gimbal. 3-way heads have always been my preference over ball heads. These ball-within-a-ball systems are very appealing from a landscape shooting perspective. For wildlife and sports I'll continue using a real gimbal.

I made the switch to the Flex Shooter Pro with lever 1 year ago and sold my Wimberley v.2 Gimbal . I love the Flex Shooter Pro with lever (don't like the knob version- i got mixed up with which knob does what) for travel and portability but miss the smoothness of my Wimberley gimbal head. I was blown away by FlexShooter's customer service last month. I felt that my inner ball was "sticking" a bit more than normal and wrote to the company to see if it could be serviced. Within 4 hours I received an email stating that they were sending me a brand new unit. I wrote back and told them my original just needed some servicing but the owner Czaba insisted on giving me a new unit. I just got the new FlexShooter today- incredible service. Bottom line- I love the Flex Shooter Pro but wish I had kept my Gimbal Head for BIF and for the ability to lower the plate on the Gimbal when sitting in the water shooting ducks. That 2 inches of vertical play with the plate was magic to get the lens hovering over the water instead of fiddling with extending the legs underwater. Bottom line- I will buy a Wimberley Gimbal in the future and am happy to have both. If I did a lot of landscape and macro I would be thrilled with the FlexShooter Pro.

Great review Scott, thanks a lot. I was intrigued by both the Uniqball and the FlexShooter and was really wondering which one I should get. Your review clearly made that choice an easy one. It will have to be the FlexShooter (probably the mini version as I don't use such large lenses). I think the greatest pro really is the versatility. This seems to be a reasonable compromise for many different use cases including video, where it certainly does not replace a fluid head but could serve that purpose as well if no fluid head is available at the moment the need for one arises occasionally.

I just now got around to watching this. I've owned the Flex Shooter Pro for about two years. Generally it is pretty good. My main complaint is the quick release clamp, which consists of four pieces instead of the usual two because the lens has to point in a given direction on the head. Since the quick release rail lines up with the lens when you are using a telephoto, and at right angles when the rail is on the camera body, you have to be able to clamp on in two different directions. The Flex Shooter solution of using a clamp with four sections makes it harder to clamp the long lens quickly and securely, especially with my ancient, heavy 600mm, f/4. I don't feel absolutely confident that it will hold if I put the tripod and lens over my shoulder, and attaching a heavy lens in a hurry can be awkward. Another thing that you didn't mention is (at least when I bought mine) the manufacturer sold replacement feet for selected lenses, including Nikon's 600mm. The reason for these is that they can lower the center of gravity some, which relieves some of the tendency to topple. I bought one, but Nikon must have changed the layout of the screws on their lenses since I bought mine, so the one I bought was useless.

Thank you. This was extremely helpful and now I know why I never liked my Uniqball (only used on one trip, coming from a Wimberly II which is a pain/heavy for Int’l air travel). I always prefer levers over knobs and just received the Flexshooter Pro lever version. So far, it rocks using a comfy/longer ProMediaGear lens foot on a Canon 500mm II with RF adapter/1.4xII extender/R3. It’s very balanced and much easier to handle than an EF800mm/1DxII/WHII. Every ounce saved is extremely important to me as long as it doesn’t sacrifice quality/increase vibrations and I look forward to using it in Patagonia to photograph pumas next month. I switched to a longer lens foot so that I’ll have a place to hold down the rig in windy conditions to simulate the handle on a WHII. I just wish that the Flexshooter came with a nice neoprene dual drawstring pouch protector aka like the one that comes with the Uniqball.

Awesome review Scott! I bought and use the "mini" and off a lens coat beanbag with the gimbal plate and mount from my Jeep window or perhaps off a hi hat from the hood of the Jeep as well as a few of my monopods too and absolutely love the thing! I have several Gimbals and of course the Katana Jr is my go to and I shot it off the bag as well but it's considerably larger and a bit more more cumbersome to maneuver in a tight space. The mini has replaced that function and is far more versatile for both my Canon DSLR's with up to the big and heavy Sigma 150-600 Sports as well as my new Sony Alpha 7R5 and the newer and lighter Sigma 150-600 Sports with the native Sony e mount. I've even used the mini off a Skimmer ground pod too for shorebirds.

The Flexshooter is good but a bit expensive. Can you recommend a video head with minimal creep?

I seen your video DIY set up for 2 camera's , you did not show this head, but they sell a Twin shooter adapter for this head so you can use 2 camera's. It's not a cheap set up, and not sure if it has more potential than the ones you showed. Also take a look at Manfrotto 131DDB Accessory arm for 4 heads -Black

I have seen that 4 head arm on a fluid head but I believe they are designed to be independent gimbals. So you are looking a very expensive set up. This was a look at a much cheaper alternative that keeps both lens generally pointed in the same direction and move together.

Can this substitute for a fluid head (like a Sacthler) for 4K Video work? thanks

its not going to be as smooth and the tension is as variable. Likely better than most gimbals though

I use a tilt head on a monopod at times and wondered if the Flexshooter Pro could be used not only on a tripod as you demonstrate but also on a monopod for wildlife. I have not considered a gimbal on the monopod as I like the size of a tilt head but I would like one device that could be used on both tripod and monopod yet easy to store away. I would welcome your thoughts.

If used in the sidemount position it makes more sense and the flex shooter is one of the few that offer that configuration. I've been testing the new katana tomahawk which is a hybrid that cab be used as a monopod or gimbal (when used with a ball head).

I’m curious what the real world use case is for these. Why not just use a real video head where you can have panning and tilting suitable for smooth video?

Hello Scott, I may have a question. I currently use a Wimberley Gimbal head with my Z9 + 400mm f/4.5. The problem is that the Z9 is way to heavy, so the gimbal head doesn't work how it should be. Do you think that this Flexshooter head could solve my problem? It sounds like I could balance the camera and the lens a bit better because it's spring loaded and I would have the chance to tighten it. Maybe you have some experience with a setup (Z9) that has much more weight on the camera site.

you coudl try a longer plate on the bottom to help. its the balance of the system, not the gimbal or head. you will likely have the same concern until you get the balance worked out. Hejnar makes a replacement foot but it may not be long enough. You could just get a long plate and attach it to the factory lens foot.

The lever clamp is much better than that black knob with the flex shooter pro because you don't get the knobs mixed up and the lever is around on the front. That way I put that silver adjustment knob right where my right hand can reach it easily at the right rear. My gitzo and gimbal head weighed 7.2 pounds and the flex shooter pro with innorel RT80 - C carbon fiber tripod weighs 5.3 lbs.

I shoot stitched panoramas as well as single frame photos. I have two and a half questions regatding the Flexshooter ProFrom what I have seen, I like the how the outer outer shell works as a roll leveler for the inner ball handling pitch and yaw positioning. My current standard head is an RRS BH-55 fitted with an RRS PC-LR clamp, and when I shoot panoramas, I add an RRS nodal rail. Q1) can this head replace the BH-55/PC-LR combination for panoramic as well as standard single frame photography or will I still need/want the PC-LR clamp? Q2) If I need the PC-LR can the clamp thatFlexShooter be replaced and if so, can the standard FlexShooter Probe ordered without a clamp?

I shoot big slow birds on a tripod (owls and harriers) No chance to use them on the closer faster birds that I see during migration. I am on team handhold for them.

I purchased my flex shooter pro a month ago and I noticed that when I mounted the head to the tripod, the flex shooter still rotates even though the lever on the outer housing is locked in the down position. Is this normal? Does it not lock completely down (without rotation) like my gimbal and other ball mount tripod heads do? I own two Manfrotto tripods that both have the standard 3/8 thread and the Flex shooter behaves the same way on each one. Maybe I got a defective one?

Typically with a long lens you would almost always mount the lens not the body. you want the weight centered and mounting the body would make it front heavy

Seems like just another expensive piece of kit. I shoot the vast majority of my wildlife using a Ifootage Cobra II monopod with a Wimberly MH-100 head. Lightweight, very mobile and small. Way cheaper than the flexshooter. Monopod and head together were less than $300 total. If I'm going to set up in a blind I use a FLM CP34-L4ii tripod with a Benro GH2 gimbal head. Those two setups do almost everything I need. I did just recently make a groundpod that will be using the gimbal head with for taking photos of assholes, er, I mean ducks.😅 So the flexshooter is, for me, an expensive solution to a problem that I don't have. That a no for me.
