For new comers who barely know anything about Vocaloid and are very confused, I highly recommend Minnemi's "an unhelpful guide to Vocaloid" video (as well as her videos she did on UTAU and fanloids as well) The title is a lie cause when I first entered this fandom nearly a year ago, I barely knew anything about it, but those videos helped me understand A LOT about Vocaloid. Another flaw: thinking that the Vocaloid community is dying. The community that is dying is the part of the fandom that only listens to songs written from 2007-2012, because people will naturally stop listening to that music after a while. However, im not saying that that music is worthless, because it’s Vocaloid roots, and it introduces people to Vocaloid to this day. But the part of the community that only listens to Servant of Evil and World is Mine is dying, because new stuff is being made from voicebanks to genres to producers. tl;dr, listen to small producers!

@@spark300c A year ago, Vocaloid’s downfall was not as glaringly obvious as it is now, especially with the new innovations Synth V that basically rub Vocaloid’s clunkiness in its face. However, V4X Miku is still going strong with Vocaloid producers (for example Deco*27 and Pinocchio-P who’ve released huge songs like Vampire and God-ish after Miku NT’s release) who’d rather use her than Miku NT, when in the past producers embraced updates fairly regularly. Gynoid’s Flower has been extremely popular since their 2016 V4 release and is currently the 3rd most-used vocal synth, as evidenced from ボカコレ (Bokakore = Vocaloid Collaboration) 2023 in which thousands of songs were released on the same day, and Flower being the 3rd-most used vocal synth. CiFlower has not had as much success, with VFlower producers trying CiFlower out and going back to VFlower (such as Nilfruits). So in that sense, Vocaloid is still going strong. But speaking of Cevio, Kafu being the 2nd most used vocal synth (source: Vocaloid Collaboration again) is definitely a sign of the Vocaloid engine’s stranglehold loosening. In terms of English, Eclipsed Sounds’s Solaria and Asterian in Synth V have been extremely popular with English producers. Teto is still too new to know how she’ll be used in the future, because all I’ve seen of Teto so far have been stellar covers but not too many widely-known/viewed original songs. BASICALLY Vocaloid the engine is not doing great at all, so producers are sticking to older voicebanks and in that way Vocaloid is preferred. But in terms of technology and the wider market, Vocaloid is losing strength. Sorry I just wanted to write a whole essay 😅

Random but also how people get mad over if you don’t use their favorite “VY2” fan concept design. Like the whole Yuuma/Roro thing. His box art is a sword, Yamaha literally stated that what he looks like is up to the producer that uses him. It happens with VY1 as well, but no where near as much as with VY2. I’ve seen people bash creators over it, just cuz it’s not their favorite or “cannon” image of him.

I've also seen people accusing artists that draw use the popular fanmade designs for Leon and Lola as "whitewashing" the characters just because their voice providers are black . Like they don't even have official avatars and people still get mad lol

Also, can we just stop with the arguments about Rin and Len being twins and Kaito’s age? Kaito officially doesn’t have an age, but people insist that he’s middle aged. I thought since he didn’t an official age, he isn’t really middle aged, or a teen, and that he could be any age you wanted him to be? Rin and Len are canonically mirrored versions of each other. And even if Rin and Len are mirror images, I don’t see the appeal of shipping them. If they’re mirror images, isn’t that technically selfcest?

They were originally going to be twins, but after seeing ship art or something like that, Crypton decided to just make them mirror versions of one another, and said they can be anything you want them to be. Which would be fine if they DIDN’T LOOK LIKE SIBLINGS AND HAD THE SAME BIRTHDAY!! That’s why I’m mostly against shipping those two.

Well yes, it's the boy/girl version of each other. I like to ship them as...friends/partners ! In some songs, they can be friends or young lovers (Suki Kirai for example). It's like...well it's a fanloid, but...Mikuo is just the boy version of Miku, so...I don't see a problem for the ship😅(that's my opinion). Also, people hit me because I like Oliver and Fukase as ship, yes and ? Fukase has no official age and there is a song where they are presented as lovers in "Otogi wa Gin no Kuni". It's still headcanon because each person has his vision of the ship, but ? If in your headcanon, both characters are adults, I don't see the problem ? Headcanon is non official and I'm just tired to be called "gross, weird" and others bad things😐Theses two Vocaloids are my favorites since a long time, and I'm quite aware of the do's and don'ts, and I won't go around writing unhealthy things.

A lot of people in this community need to see this video. There’s a lot more problems than beyond this of course but I’m glad you addressed some of these issues. While the community seems so welcoming at first, it is very much the opposite. Bullying has even affected my outlook on the community to where it now feels like I’m gaslighting myself trying to love it. I really want this community to be better and more welcoming.

Thank you for recognizing the newer fans. As a person who got into vocaloid through FNF, I know that the new fans are always thought to be Dream SMP kids who do the Ashite trend on Ticktock or KZread shorts. I'm so glad that someone who's been in the fandom for so long can defend the new fans who just want to have fun in the community.

As an older vocaloid fan it makes me so happy to see people get into the fandom, regardless of how they got into it. I don't understand why people who were in my situation (used to not know anybody who liked vocaloid, got bullied for liking vocaloid, etc) are so against new fans. Like y'all are great. I want to see this fandom grow and evolve, and new fans are what make that happen.

A couple things I never really see mentioned that are sort of an extension is the insane amount of pedo themed songs that people were just... completely okay with at the time. I don't mean songs like "I'm sorry I'm sorry" that portrayed it in a negative manner or about growing from trauma, but songs that were trying to portray it in a disturbingly positive light. Those were often sent to me by other people as a child because it was in their words "funny". There was also KZreadrs who would undermine songs that actually treated the subject well by putting them in scary vocaloid song videos and basically treat the subject like it was a fucking Halloween campfire story.

This also bleeds into the MMD community too since so much of MMD revolves around vocaloid models and songs. The gatekeeping is especially bad there.

@@andreasavy7 i saw a lot of bullying towards newcomers. like people using very basic but accessible models. not knowing how to do the cool stuff with MME. bad posing or animations. one girl i talked with got bullied so bad she never touched the program again. she got bullied for asking simple questions, and making "cringe edits". like i even made a tutorial for her to use one effect because she asked how to use that effect. and funny enough on that tutorial i still get new comments on sometimes thanking me for making it, or it being in starter link sets i came across. but yeah it's just sad it happened like that. they bullied a girl out of having fun with a free 3d animation program. and this was just one case i guess.

@@hawaiidkw1 also just don't bully people for wanting to know how you achieved some looks. like i remember having to look up video tutorials on how to use the effects i wanted to use. it's not hard to just link a tutorial or even just explain it in steps. some effects are really hard to use and easy to mess up if you load parts in the wrong order. and some mistakes are not an easy fix by just removing the loaded things.

Ok I often get bullied for listening Japanese singing Robots at my school and yea a lot of people tell me it sucks and people can be rlly rude about different music tastes am I the only one who gets bullied for listening to vocaloid?

For me the worst elitists are those who say that every song post "golden age" sucks. Speaking of Vocaloid do you play Project Sekai? If you do I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

What even _was_ the golden age? I started following just before Yukari and Ia burst onto the scene, and about seven years later the community was a barren landscape. Some days I barely even remember Rion exists.

i get so annoyed when people bully newcomers for thinking vocaloid is an anime ive seen a reply that misinterpretted the og comment, getting pissed at the op saying that "VOCALOID ISNT AN ANIME!!!!" despite them saying that rin and len was drawn in an anime art style rather than saying vocaloid IS an anime. even if they did say it was an anime, the way they said it was 100% not needed. when telling people abt vocaloid, dont get mad when they think its an anime please im so tired of seeing this stuff

Every time this comes up, I always ask the same question (and you should too): An anime _what?_ For example, I definitely think the snippet AH-Soft plays to introduce their televised meetings qualifies, but that's probably not what you're thinking of.

Going to watch this later and just wanted to see the points first but what about new people that use tiktok or gacha joining the fandom because of trends and not giving any credits to the producers and crediting the vocaloids instead. I’ve ran into too many occurrences of this. I think it’s becoming a problem.

All of the things you mentioned are things that I personally find a bit irritating (especially the elite thing) and it's nice to know that you share those thoughts I would like to add that something that I personally find really questionable is that a lot of people tend to recommend songs with themes like incest, cannibalism, pedophilia and gore in general to young children (like 8 to 11 year olds) that want to get into vocaloid I won't act like I never do enjoy songs with those themes, because that is not true but it's really weird to recommend a song like I'm sorry I'm sorry by kikuo to an eight year old

I haven't been in the fandom as long as some of the other people watching this video, but another issue is ship-bashing anything with Kaito and/or Meiko and someone under the age of eighteen. I myself am a victim of people yelling at me for shipping KaiLen 'cause it's "pedophilia". As several other people have mentioned, Kaito has no official age despite being stated by several sources that he is a "middle-aged man". If we were going by that logic, then yes, shipping him with fourteen-year-old Len would be pedophilia. But, in my opinion, no canon age = no issues (unless it's, like, Oliver or Yuki or something, 'cause Kaito looks like a teen/adult and they are CHILDREN). I think you should be allowed to ship what you want. If Kaito was ACTUALLY a middle-aged man, the issue would make sense, but he's not. Just let me ship KaiLen in peace...

Yamaha has addressed this behavior and told everyone to basically knock it off when they were getting harassed over promoting songs like World is Mine because sexualizing 16 yr old Miku was “p3d0” 🙄

i guess newer fans aren't aware that kaito has no offical age and kinda base their conclusion on the fact that kaito's often portrayed as looking older than len, if thats the case than i can see why people make that mistake because i'd definitely make it too

It also depends on what version of Len we are talking about, and I'm not referring to fan interpretations, Append Len for example, looks way older than original 14 year old Len, and not much younger than Kaito. So yeah, although it can be say that Len has been "canonically" (or rather, officially) portrayed as a kid, he has also been portrayed as been older, in his Append version he could be an older teen or be in his 20's, and given that it's not like Vocaloid has one specific canon continuity, then i don't see why would be imposible to see them as having the same age? I get why people feel icky about this, but nothing is canon in Vocaloid, i don't think it's that serious either. Because Append Len wasn't made by a fan who thirsted over Len and age him up so it could be acceptable to thirst over him, but rather, it's official material, and i don't think there's anything wrong if someone latch onto that version of Len over the other ones.

I have heard from my buds on discord that some fans were toxic and even one musician quit vocaloid and just went to doing instrumentals but to tell you the truth, I haven't seen it just yet. I haven't seen it on discord either. Vocaloid community is generally pretty okay. If anyone is getting harassed it be me since I grew up with Jazz and now is experimental since I play with a lot of esoteric scales, like the one from Indonesian gamelan music I'm trying so hard to modernize lol. And it's frikin hard. Not a lot of people will get that. So far they've been alright. If it's just one guy every now and then it's not a problem for me, I just delete them. Haven't seen it yet though. Also stuff said towards Oliver, I mean I have heard of ships with fukase but that's about it :/ but Miku, oh man that's all over discord XD. But it's generally okay imo. That's my waifu, and just guys being guys, even some women. But hey I go my own way now and vocaloid has helped me too much in that area. There's no leaving it for me, and I think helps a lot of others as well. Let's face it, dating sucks these days. I even seen one guy how having a waifu really helped him in dark times like no one else does. His waifu was Yui. From K-On. Real people just leave or ignore. Like my ex. I said screw this, Miku was there. So generally, it helps people, they clean up over time, get social again, and when they need to show off their waifu in anyway they got the communities online to express that. You don't ever have to go to the communities if you don't want too though, yeah it's pretty weird. But it helps them. Like that one japanese guy that married Miku lol! Ay man that's life 😂.

The vocaloid artist Wowaka rip quit vocaloid because of the credit issues when people credited miku and not him the artist so he left vocaloid and played his own music in a band or something before he passed away which is really sad because his music was revolutionary . When I looked up what song made miku popular it said unhappy refrain a Wowaka song and just made me so upset just thinking about the fact that he was one of the greates vocaloid songwriters to ever exist and he wasn’t credited for his creation. Really makes me appreciate rolling girl and worlds end dancehall a lot more

First of all great video, you covered some of the most important issues, I'll just leave some more of my thoughts below About your p*dophilia point: most ppl in the fandom still know about Ryuto as a character (tho less as a vb) and Kafu actually got voiced by a minor too. A while ago I saw someone saying that even though some of the canon minors got voiced by adults it's kinda weird with voicebanks that are obviously voice-acted, they named Una as an example, too. This is just my personal observation but it seems like the issue is more on the Japanese than on the international side Personally I feel like the fandom is as messy rn because it's growing pretty quickly ever since the international version of Project Sekai got released. It'll probably get better again with the misinformation in a few years when some of them stayed for a longer while Kinda relating to the point above but I feel like the gatekeeping got notably worse within idk the last 2 years. And "came from Sekai" seems to be a synonyme for "new / misinformed fan" these days and that's just so toxic Also most fandom flaws highly depend on the social media platform. While Twitter has a new producer drama going on twice a week, Pinterest never ever gives art credit to someone etc. Another point that I feel like is an issue specifically in the Vocaloid fandom is that ppl need to realise and accept that everyone has diffrent tastes. This applies to both producers and voicebanks. From 2016 - 2019 everyone was like "omg the fandom is dying" before we had the sudden boom of new non-Vocaloid voicebanks and producers in late 2020 / early 2021. And now people either seem to love or hate everything new and fighting each other. Personally I tend to like releases from 2015 - 2018 most but there are good songs in every era. Out of this year's releases I really liked Neppuu (mikitoP), Theatre (Nanou) and Dance Of The Frogs (Kikuo) for example

Not legally. Official copies of Vocaloid 2 are extremely rare to find online for an affordable price. The only way most fans are able to even use the Vocaloid 2 editor is through pirating. You can purchase SOME Vocaloid 2 voicebanks, mostly the Crypton and PowerFX ones. Most Vocaloid 2 voicebanks are completely out of production though.

Not really against the community but more towards the music. I kinda hate how almost all of them have the same tone when it comes to drums and guitars. With songs like Skeleton Orchestra and Hey there baby it works cause it isn’t the generic happy tone you always hear. Skeleton orchestra sounds a bit old timey but remastered while Hey there baby has a more of a… I really despise this word with every fiber of my being but a “sexy” vibe to it.
