"The Flash" is a film packed with references, Easter eggs, and cameos that delight fans of the DC Universe. The story follows Barry Allen, also known as The Flash, as he navigates through time and alternate realities to save his mother and restore balance to the universe. Throughout the movie, numerous nods to DC comics, previous films, and real-world cinematic history can be found.
In "The Flash," Barry Allen encounters Michael Keaton's Batman and acknowledges him as the world's greatest detective. The Batcave is filled with Easter eggs, including the iconic theme music from the 1989 Batman film and the Batmobile from the same movie. Another notable item is a laughing bag prank toy, which references the Joker's demise in the 1989 film. Keaton's Batman has various gadgets and suits on display, paying homage to different versions of the character from comics and movies.
During a mission to rescue Supergirl, the movie blends elements from the "Flashpoint" comics and "Superman: Red Son." The rescue takes place in a Russian facility instead of a U.S. lab, and Kara Zor-El is saved instead of Kal-El. The film showcases Batman's skills and iconic lines, such as "I'm Batman" and "You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts!" Batman's tools and fighting style are reminiscent of his previous appearances.
In the climax, the movie references various moments from the DCEU, such as Batman's encounter with Nam-Ek from Man of Steel and the Flash's speed comparison to Superman from the Justice League. The multiverse is explored, featuring different versions of Superman, Supergirl, and Batman from past films and TV shows. Nicolas Cage's Superman from the canceled "Superman Lives" project makes an appearance, battling a giant spider in a nod to the unfilmed script. The ultimate villain is revealed to be a corrupted version of Barry Allen, influenced by Dark Flash, Black Flash, and Red Death from the comics and CW's "Flash" show.
Barry travels back in time to save his mother's life but eventually returns to undo the changes, allowing his father to be exonerated in a trial. The movie ends with a cameo from director Andy Muschietti, and Barry's timeline is restored with minor alterations.
