Let me get this straight; a uniformed cop tells Scheffler to drive on through; then an a plain clothed cop stops him and attaches himself to Scheffler's car. Scheffler is charged with a felony? If charges aren't dropped, I smell a lawsuit.

Its so bits and pieces because the police arent releasing much information. It could have been avoided if Det Gillis had told Scheffler there had been a fatality. Plus its unclear what "attaching to the car" means. I'm fairly certain that under the law, a police officer is allowed to use words, follow you, but not put their body on your vehicle.

@@knox1044 In a perfect world, there would not have been dozens of emergency vehicles with super bright light bars flashing and he would have seen or heard the officer. I have been blinded by a single Georgia State Patrol car with his blue lights on. He was standing in the roadway giving directions, but I could not see what he was doing and he had a green safety vest with a flashlight. the first officer told him what to do and he followed that officer's instructors directions. I think what happened is the 2nd officer, the detective, did not understand that Scheffler had already been given clear instruction by the PGA officials and the other officer. I don't understand how he missed the PGA markings on the car and the fact that Scheffler's credentials were visible the whole time.

@cragre28 I was driving down an unfamiliar county road in northern Georgia at night. I was distracted by my three adolescent boys in the pickup and pulling a trailer. I'd just turned around because I was lost. There were flashing red and blue lights ahead, as well as the headlights of a big rig truck stalled in the oncoming lane. I strained to see in the blinding lights and slowed way down to about 10-15 mph. Suddenly a figure emerged from the glare right in my path. It happened so quickly. It was dark, he was wearing dark brown clothes with nothing light or reflective. I slammed on my brakes as the idiot in dark clothing jumped out of my way. That "idiot" was a deputy. I apologized profusely to the obviously flustered, angry cop. Fortunately, even though he had the self-preservation instincts of a lemming near a cliff, he didn't have a massive ego. He looked at me real firmly, but bit his tongue, and waved me through. Even though I'd slowed way down and was trying to be safe, I could've knocked that cop flat because I was blinded by those lights and he didn't have enough sense to put on something reflective. I know exactly how these things can happen.

I think not so much crooked, its just that American cops are so ingrained with treating citizens like animals (and some are!) that they are conditioned to over-react (jumping on the car?) then over-charge all to save their ego. To predict the future; as the judge intimated: knock down the felony and settle for 1 or 2 misdemeanor charges. Community service in Louisville KY for 200 hours plus $$$ penalty & pay court costs. IF THIS DOES NOT SETTLE, big bucks lawyers will [ 1 ] try the case with a jury OR [2] FRY the arresting officer in front of a jury during trial. ** same strategy as O.J' s trial. Smear & begrudge the detective with firing cross examination. We'll C.

The cop jumped onto his car, his injuries was his own fault, this actually illustrates how some tough on crime legislation from the 90's has led to cops being able to wreck your life, because cops can literally put their bodies in your way, get "injured 🤭" and charge a normal person with a felony. I personally believe the cop didn't know he was dealing with a big time golfer and decided to jump on his car, knowing he could wreck this guy's life by the charges he's going to drop on him afterwards, especially if he couldn't afford a real lawyer and now he's probably sweating buckets, because he knows the local system won't dare to play the games in favor of the cops with this level of scrutiny; therfore its not going to hold up in court and because "if nothing else" for agreed insurance reasons alone, he actually probably broke department policy by jumping on that car, and because of the scrutiny, internal affairs this time, is going to actually follow the actual policy and law on the matter, which means he is possibly going to get suspended for acting like a fool.

Police: Officer dragged trying to stop Scottie Scheffler's car Mark Schlabach, ESPN Senior Writer: May 17, 2024, 11:59 AM ET LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The police officer who attempted to stop world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler from entering Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning was dragged to the ground and suffered "pain, swelling and abrasions" to his left wrist and knee after Scheffler's car accelerated, according to an incident report released by the Louisville Metro Police Department. The report, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, said detective Bryan Gillis, identified as Det. Gillis in the report, was directing traffic at Shelbyville Road near Gate 1 of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship. Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET. The report said Gillis was standing in the middle of the westbound lanes when Scheffler's SUV pulled into the lanes to avoid the traffic backup The report said Gillis was wearing a full police uniform and a "high-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket." The World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested Friday morning and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and not following police directions. Getty Images Gillis stopped Scheffler's SUV and attempted to give instructions, according to the report. "The subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground," the report said. Gillis was transported to a hospital by emergency medical personnel for evaluation. The report said his uniform pants were also damaged beyond repair. Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors. An arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET. Maj. Jason Logsdon of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections told ESPN that Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET Friday without bail. He arrived at Valhalla less than an hour before he was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET. Scheffler shot a 5-under 66 on Friday to move into a tie for third place on the leaderboard. "This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," Scheffler said in a statement. "It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. "Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective." According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene. At one point, according to Darlington, Gillis attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club. After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs. Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?" According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away. "Our primary concern today remains with the family of John Mills, who lost his life in a tragic accident early this morning while reporting to work," said the PGA of America in a statement. "As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place. While the legal process plays out, questions should be directed to Scheffler's attorney or local authorities." Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, told ESPN that the golfer attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club as he had been instructed to earlier, unaware there had been a fatal wreck just up the road. "He was going into Valhalla to work out," Romines said. "He was getting ready for his tee time. They were directing traffic. He held his credential out and was going in like they'd been instructed to. Apparently, there had been a traffic accident, maybe even a fatality, down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that." Romines, speaking outside the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, said the officer who attempted to stop Scheffler wasn't part of the regular event-traffic detail at Valhalla Golf Club, "so that's where the miscommunication arose." "They are allowed to go through, that's why they have the credential and the wave-through," Romines said. "[Scheffler] was unaware there had been a wreck, and he proceeded like they'd been instructed to. He did exactly as he was instructed to enter the premises." Romines said Scheffler would cooperate fully with police, and "we'll deal with it as it progresses." "This morning, our city experienced a tragic accident that took the life of John Mills, a Louisvillian who will be greatly missed by his family and our community. Our focus is on this family who lost their loved one. I have spoken with members of Mr. Mills' family to convey our city's condolences," said Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg in a statement. "Following this tragedy, LMPD stopped traffic to assist with its investigation into the fatal accident. It is unfortunate that an incident took place between an LMPD officer and Mr. Scheffler while he was attempting to enter Valhalla. LMPD is fully investigating this incident and the legal process will proceed. We appreciate everyone's cooperation. "We remain focused on the tragic loss of life and will share more information on both of these matters as available."

@@duke3187 Trying to do his job? Why were the other golfers allowed to go around the traffic to get to the tournament? Why was this one cop determined to hinder someone in a marked car from getting to his job? Believe me, I despise people who go around a traffic jam on the median, like they are more special than the rest of us. My BIL is a doctor. He gets special treatment from cops. Why? Because he might be traveling to the hospital for an emergency. (He might not, either, but he still gets the privileges.) This guy had a tee time for work, not for fun. Let him go.

When there are a massive amount of first responders in one location along with the road blocked off, you don't take it upon yourself to just assume you can bypass everyone on the friggin median. This man may be able to play golf but has very little common sense. The right thing to do would have been to stop, tell an officer who you are, and then be shown where they were allowing players to drive through. I have zero sympathy for him. I don't know why the cop grabbed onto his car. He should have gotten the plate and sent a free officer after him.
