A warrior sets out in search of water to save his kingdom from drought. He brings home what they think is a 'water-seed'.

बहुत पहले एक तालाब के चारों ओर एक राज्य बसा था। एक साल भारी गर्मियों में बारिश नहीं हुई और तालाब सूख गया। लोग परेशान हुए और वे राजा से मिलने गए।
There once was a small kingdom around a lake. One very hot summer, it did not rain and the lake dried up. People grew anxious, and went to the king.
"बहुत दिनों से बारिश नहीं हुई है हमारे खेत बंजर हो गए हैं!" किसानों ने कहा। "मछली तक नहीं है। हमारा गुज़ारा कैसे होगा?" मछुआरे बोले। "हे महाराज! हमें इस मुसीबत से बचाइये।" औरतों ने अनुरोध किया और बच्चे प्यास के मारे रो दिए।
“It has not rained for so long. Our fields are barren!” said the farmers. “There’s no fish to catch. How shall we earn a living?” asked the fishermen. “Save us from disaster, good king,” urged the women and the children cried with thirst.
राजा ने अपने चार सेनापतियों को पानी की तलाश में चारों दिशाओं में भेज दिया। पहला सेनापति पूर्व, सूर्योदय की ओर बढ़ा। दूसरा दक्षिण, धूल और गर्मी की ओर गया। तीसरा पश्चिम की दिशा जहाँ सूर्यास्त होता है, और चौथा उत्तर, ध्रुवतारा की दिशा को चला।
The king sent his four generals, to search for water in all directions. The first general went east, towards the sunrise, the second to the south, to dust and heat, the third went west, where the sun sets, and the fourth followed the North Star.
वे रात-दिन, दिन-रात पानी ढूँढ़ते रहे। ऊपर नीचे सब तरफ़ हर जगह पानी ढूँढ़ा पर असफ़ल रहे।
They searched day and night, night and day, high and low. They searched everywhere, but in vain. j
तीन सेनापति हारकर वापस लौट आए, ख़ाली हाथ। पर वह सेनापति जो उत्तर दिशा को गया था, दृढ़-निश्चित था कि अपने राजा को निराश नहीं करेगा आख़िर एक ठंडे पहाड़ पर बसे हुए गाँव को पहुँचा। जैसे ही वह पर्वत के नीचे बैठा एक बूढ़ी औरत उसके पास आकर बैठ गई।
Three of the generals returned, empty-handed. But the general who had gone north, determined not to fail his king, finally reached a cold mountain village. As he sat at the foot of the mountain, an old woman came by and sat next to him.
सेनापति ने क्षितिज की ओर इशारा करते हुए कहा "मैं एक ख़ूबसूरत राज्य का रहनेवाला हूँ जहाँ एक साल से पानी नहीं बरसा है। क्या आप पानी ढूँढ़ने में मेरी सहायता कर सकती हैं?" औरत ने सेनापति को अपने पीछे ऊपर पर्वत की गुफ़ा में आने का संकेत किया।
The general pointed at the horizon and said, “I belong to a beautiful kingdom, where it has not rained for a whole year. Can you help me find water?” The woman asked the general to follow her up the mountain and into a cave.
"हमारे शहर में भी पानी नहीं है।" वह बोली फिर गुफ़ा में लटकती हुई बर्फ़ की धाराओं को दिखाते हुए उसने कहा "हम इसे बर्फ़ कहते हैं। इसे ले जाओ और तुम्हारे राज्य में कभी कोई प्यासा नहीं रहेगा।" सेनापति ने एक बड़ा सा बर्फ़ का टुकड़ा तोड़ा और अपनी घोड़ा-गाड़ी पर उसे लादकर जल्दी अपने घर को चला।
“We have no water in our country either,” she said. Then, pointing to the icicles in the cave, she continued, “We call this ice. Take some, and your kingdom will never go thirsty again.” The general broke off a huge piece, loaded it into his horse-cart and rushed back home.
जब तक वह दरबार पहुँचा वह बर्फ़ का टुकड़ा पिघलकर एक छोटा टुकड़ा बन चुका था। दरबार में किसी ने बर्फ़ नहीं देखी थी और सब अचरज-भरी नज़र से उसे ताकने लगे। "यह अवश्य ही जल-बीज होगा" एक मंत्री अचानक चीख उठा। राजा ने 'जल-बीज' को तुरन्त बोने का आदेश दिया।
By the time he reached the court, the enormous icicle had melted into a small lump of ice. Nobody in the court had ever seen ice, so everybody gazed at it with wonder! “This must be a water-seed,” one of the ministers exclaimed suddenly. The king ordered the water-seed to be sowed immediately.
ज्यों-ज्यों किसान धरती खोदते गए त्यों-त्यों बर्फ़ का टुकड़ा धूप में पिघलता रहा। उन्होंने जल्द उस बीज को गड्ढे में रखा, पर इससे पहले कि वे उसे ढक पाते वह ग़ायब हो चुका था।
While the farmers dug a hole in the ground, the lump grew even smaller in the sun. They swiftly placed the seed in the hole, but, before they could cover it, it had vanished.
किसान बड़े भ्रमित और चिंतित हुए। रात भर वे धरती को उस जादुई बीज की खोज में गहरा करते गए। भोर के समय राजा ने किसानों को गड्ढे के इर्द-गिर्द सोता पाया। जिज्ञासु राजा ने गड्ढे में झाँका और ख़ुशी से चहक उठा "जागो मेरे होनहार आदमियोें जल-बीज विकसित हो चुका है! गड्ढे में पानी है!" इस प्रकार पहला कुआँ बना।
They dug the earth deeper and deeper, into the night, looking for the mysterious seed. At the break of dawn, the king found the farmers fast asleep around the hole. Curiously, he peeped in and cried out in amazement, “Wake up, my worthy men, the water-seed has sprouted! There’s water in the hole!” This is how the first well was created.
