@3:43 so many dog owners (of family pets) think after a dog is trained it's all good for the dog's life, but little do they realize that their dogs will need constant refreshers and training throughout their dog's life. A good training and structured play schedule provides mental enrichment that chilling on the couch just doesn't deliver. I've really upped my training game since I started watching you!!

Thanks for the videos. I’m trying to get serious about training our 5 month old Malinois mix rescue. Your videos are going to be really helpful. I didn’t really know where to start until I found your videos.

Thank you. I knew to charge my marker (I use ok instead of yes) but never thought to start by charging good. Watching videos to refresh my memory, I have a puppy after over 10 years without one. Good refresher. Glad I found you. Also, years ago I had my Malinois Jake get hurt after I threw a long ball on a soccer field, and didn’t see the undulation in the distance between the 2 fields. Glad I saw your video on not playing fetch to remind me.

I’m hoping to be bringing our new GS baby home in a few weeks, your training is very helpful I’ve gone from complete noob to feeling super confident in training our puppy! You need a TV show, better than the dog whisperer lol

I wish i new this before to train our puppy, this is pretty cool simple and very easy to do. This video is really interesting next time in the future when i get a puppy i would watch over this again and do your trainning. Great Job thank you so much.

Nice. I always give the reward from my eye level as soon as I can, to get eye contact. Get that early and you are sweet. All depends on the dog though, but after the first few reps following your hand, I go from eye level. Liking your approach Andy, very good content for new and experienced owners alike. No BS and you get into it. Hope you get many more subs.

Andy I'm so happy to have found your channel :)! I'm looking to get a Pembroke around he's 8 months old-- and will definitely follow these training details in mind! I just had a couple questions: you mentioned letting the puppy go into the crate after training outdoors-- duration wise how long should I let my Pembroke in the crate indoors? Also I've been watching your other videos on luring, teaching the down-- when would it be a good time to introduce those different trainings? Thank you again!

Thanks!! First thing I do as well at session 1....its all they work on, then with 1 known command and how they LIVE with the dog and change there relationship (pampering, over affection, no more walks outside for the week if puller, etc)...people have no clue what must be done!..I rarely address behavioral issues before session 3...once markers are fully understood and timing is proper! Thanks, great video!!

Going out to do this now! So we have a 5 month old German shepherd puppy, we train with her every day but haven’t had a firm grasp on what to do everyday (like this) - you said to put the dog away right after training. How should we structure training throughout the day, while still going to work and school and ensuring she gets the exercise/time with the family? I totally believe you, I just don’t know how it’s supposed to work with a puppy! We try to burn her energy with training, fetch, chews, and walks. Is this wrong?

I am familiar with the 'Yes' marker and have changed (and refreshed from time to time) to mark the dog has done something right. However, I can't seem to wrap my head around how to use the 'good' marker?Can you please give me an example on how to apply 'Good' marker?

@AndyKrueger would you recommend all breeds of puppy back in the cage? I'm about to pickup my Malinois puppy, wasn't sure if maybe they need to be worked more, or if after this session they should also go back into the Cage.

Any tips on a 4-5 yr old female German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix?

Hi I'm a noob dog owner 'first timer' and 10 months ago I was given a pup which happens to be a Mal mix. I love my buddy and I do all I can for him. Just one problem... I had no idea on what to do for the past 8 months(we were just living) till recently when I found you on YT and I must say your videos are educational, inspirational and motivating and we are making progress with our newfound training, the problem tho is that my buddy likes to blow me off and just rolls over or sits on my feet when training. Will we ever have the same kind of mutual dedication as you and your homies? Also in one of your videos you mentioned the importance of having the dog in their crate after training, my mum wouldn't let me keep my buddy in my room so I had a Mal cave built(just a wooden dog house :'( How is it gonna cost me when it comes to him remembering our training?

Sounds like the dog needs to have much more food motivation. Perhaps a diet is in order. A crate is best but alternatives can work depending.

My retriever is 8 years old and every now and then I go through the whole gambit of commands with a reward so she doesn't forget them.

Please, what commands do you use during training? Gooshi seems great to me, but I can't find this or any other command anywhere. Thank you very much

Andy, We have 2 mals and a rescue golden-doodle. The older Mal is my guy and we’re recently off while I recover from back surgery. My wife has been having issues with reinforcing our dogs are to be calm/collected/quiet, certainly before they get anything but in the house especially. Since I’ve been off and home, I’ve noticed our younger Mal and gd go absolutely bonkers early in the morning before she takes them on a walk/run. I’ve also noticed our younger Mal and rescue are increasingly difficult with her by play fighting (establishing dominance) and have amped up the frequency and negative behaviors in the house around her. Fortunately, my Mal could care less and never gets out of line but it’s difficult for me to explain how and why all three don’t misbehave with or around me. Maybe you can do a video if my long winded comment makes sense. Lol Thanks for the help and all the best!

Are they trained on corrective collars? (Prong/ ecollar?) Meaningful corrections definitely need to be applied. Are they trained on a place command? This is the most important command for inside the house. I’d personally never give a dog freedom of any kind in the house until my place command is absolutely bulletproof. I’d bet all the dog’s have way too much free time and lack a mastery of the basics. I recommend going back to square one and working with all the dogs separately and methodically. If quality training time is not being regularly logged with the dogs separately, there is no way they will trust and respect the humans. I always say, you need to teach the dogs what to do instead of attempting to tell them what not to do 🙏🏼

@@AndyKrueger You’re reading my mind and nailed it. Younger Mal and golden doodle have never been exposed to e pressure, only the doodle hasn’t been trained on prongs. Two mals have place/platz command but somehow their places have gotten cushioned, 😒. Doodle has had both knees reconstructed so we try not to sit or down him, just stay. The second they’re (Younger Mal & doodle) in her hand they pull and focus elsewhere. I’ve dusted off the e collar and will be replacing their current cushy leash and collar setup. They’ve absolutely had free reign of everything and are taking full advantage but interestingly have been fine for me on my short walks, in the yard and in the house. This morning both Mal’s were placed while getting little man ready and off to school. I’ll get working with them individually while recovering and get the humans onboard with the structure and discipline that it takes and the dogs want. Thanks for the reply and reinforcement! Edit: I’ve used my older finished Mal as an example of what my (our) goals and expectations for all the dogs are. I’m having difficulty getting her on board with my style but at the end of the day it’s up to me to get them dialed in.

@@AndyKrueger Right on, awesome and will do! I really appreciate the feedback and advice. Unfortunately I’ve spent all my time with one and have been complacent with the other two and it shows, definitely not fair to them. Fortunately, being off and alone during the day with all three here will be good quality time for individually rebuilding behaviors and getting everyone on the same page. I’m breaking down individual sessions to 10-15 minutes twice a day for now because of my recent surgery but might go 25-30 once a day. Also doing impromptu work throughout the day inside… thoughts? Take care 🤝

Question: I just rescued an amazing, chill, low motivated, young Malnois mix. He is already well trained but now we need to aclimate and learn together. We have bonded & are in love. But he is not food/treat motivated. Suggestions? PLEASE???

Whatever you condition becomes so strong that it appears reflexive. So you shouldn’t lose it even if you decided not to put the dog away correct? You mind elaborating on why you choose to put the dog away after a training session? My first mentor use to say that it was important to put the dog away as well, but as I continued to learn from other people, they would say it’s not necessary or it doesn’t have the effect that we think it does.

I understand both sides. But I prefer to put away because I believe it helps them better retain information. Every trainer and dog is different and unique so I wouldn’t totally disagree with a trainer that says otherwise. I also have the average pet owner in mind making this, and their dogs are usually out too much which is why I really encourage it.

A crate and a leash my friend 🙌🏻 Chewing/ eating means you’re setting the dog up repeatedly for failure. Likely way too much freedom too fast.

What Kindle of dog is that? He is adorable

Love the video, but if I'm being critical, careful on when you use the verbal markers that you don't use them the SAME time you present with your hand as the dog may interpret the movement as the marker. You are right, teach and build those reward markers first.

I have a question what if the dog is not food motivated how do I help her. We definitely have some training and retraining to do and I appreciate your videos our Gsd is not food motivated at all.

A dog not motivated by food is either way over fed or has a medical issue 👍🏻

What does the difference between good and yes evolve into? Is Good used more in a stay situation where you're moving to and giving the food reward vs the Yes marker to be used down the road for shaping and when the dog moves towards the reward?

Great question! Yes good will be a ‘duration marker’ and yes will be a ‘release marker’.

For example; I tell the dog Sit Stay, then after a few seconds I say Good, which means he has to KEEP sitting and I will deliver the reward. If I say sit stay then Yes, he can explode out of the position and come get his reward 🙏🏼
