THE FIRST STUDIO GHIBLI FILM: *NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND* (1984) REACTION

Ойын-сауық

Here is my reaction to Studio Ghibli's first animated film, the 1984 adventure fantasy Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
First time watching Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) Reaction.
Far in the future, after an apocalyptic conflict has devastated much of the world's ecosystem, the few surviving humans live in scattered semi-hospitable environments within what has become a "toxic jungle." Young Nausicaä lives in the arid Valley of the Wind and can communicate with the massive insects that populate the dangerous jungle. Under the guidance of the pensive veteran warrior, Lord Yupa, Nausicaä works to bring peace back to the ravaged planet.

Nausicaa is one of the best Ghibli Protagonists, tbh. And a total badass with a functioning moral compass. Such a great role model for everyone. Plus that scene where the army first arrives in the valley and she flips back and touches the ground to look for a weapon without looking down will live rent-free in my head for so long.

I know that your whole vibe is more giggly and jokey, I have been watching your videos long enough to know that... But I don't know about this one, it was just... odd! It felt like it didn't really match some of the energy of the movie. Some quiet scenes you were more quiet, in others you would be making jokes that wouldn't exactly land. I wonder if this is my own bias towards this movie, or if this was just my own feelings regarding more serious ghibli movies in general and how some people can take them. It was a good reaction overall, and while I like your video reactions this one just didn't stick the landing.

One of the charms of Ghibli film's is the attention to detail delivering a sense of belivabilty with how everything works. Even with their most fantastical designs, the way little parts of them move and shift when they're in motion permits our brains to buy into the. It's a unique sort of "functional fantasy" which the studio excels at.

I know people have strong feelings about the Disney dubs for these films but I truly believe they are some of the best dubs out there. Disney put an insane amount of money and care into adjusting the script to match the mouth movements of the characters in all the films. I also think that the voice casts are really well suited for most of the movies Edit: I also wanted to add that this is Miyazaki's first film that he directed as part of studio ghibli but it is also the first project of a young animator named Hideaki Anno. He would go on to create a show called Neon Genesis Evangelion which is widely regarded as one of the most influential anime of all time and the show that single handedly introduced anime to the west.

This is a pre-Ghibli film, but made by several of the same people who later formed Studio Ghibli. What strikes me about Ghibli films and this one in particular is how much they tell you with just pictures. After the credits have run, we meet the main character and by the time we get five minutes in, including the prelude and credits, we already can see that Nausicaa is a young woman comfortable with weapons, and she obviously has a scientific interest in botany. You can tell that she's not just collecting samples for someone else, because of the interest she shows in one sample right after sealing the phial. That's brilliant visual story-telling. And I didn't notice the first dozen or so times I watched this film... look at the last image you see before the opening credits end... then look at the first glimpse we get of Nausicaa just a few seconds later... That silly-sounding "la, la-la-la, la-la-la" chorus turns out to be one of the most significant musical pieces of the movie. The first time we hear it is when the Ohmu is "talking" to Nausicaa right after the gunship and glider land in the swamp. Then the second time we hear it, we see the memory which it's connected to, and which the Ohmu obviously saw earlier. Then the third time we hear it, the Ohmu repay like for like, and life for life. Oh, and I think that fox-squirrel's name is actually Keyto which is pronounced kay-toe.

There is a huge manga of the story. I haven't read it yet, but the size tells me that it must greatly expand on the story. Miyazaki apparently likes those crooked evil smiles. If you watch The Castle of Cagliostro (not Ghibli, since Ghibli didn't exist yet), the bad guy looks very similar. You have seen The Cat Returns, but *not* Whisper of the Heart? You should The Cat Returns is kinda a sequel. Or maybe a story told within Whisper of the Heart, since that is mostly realistic, except for some odd details.

Love to see people watch great things that I also adore. That said, a correction needs establishing. Ghibli was not formed as a company and collective studio until production began on Laputa/Castle in the Sky. Nausicaä was produced by Miyazaki and Takahata at Top Craft. People make the same mistake with Castle of Cagliostro, which was Miyazaki but not Ghibli.

@@TrophyReacts Well, for starters the movie's only like...maybe a fifth or sixth of what the manga is. The movie started being worked on while Miyazaki was creating the earlier parts of the manga, and the manga itself wouldn't be completed until 1994, 12 years after it started (he'd keep working on it between movies). The stuff with the Torumekians and their princess (Kushana) using the God Warrior don't happen and Nausicaa, when she leaves with their forces, ends up delving further into the mainland (the movie only shows a small part along the outskirts of society). There's a lot more war and death and stuff further into the manga (Mr. Slant-Mouth even almost dies at one point but is saved after he gets injured trying to help them get away from enemy forces). As it progresses more and more villages get swallowed up by the bugs and the Toxic Jungle that they propogate (with The Empire (the main enemy faction)) developing a new type of substances that causes the forest to grow even faster endangering society even more. The Empire is the main driving forces behind the conflict which is never shown in the film. At first Miralupa is the one leading The Empire (if I remember right the Empire is The Doroks) and has immense psychic abilities but isn't able to kill Nausicaa and she ends up leading him into the afterlife after making their way through the Jungle. It's also shown that at the other side of the Jungle birds and normal life are actually living beyond it and the air is completely clean after going through the process of rejuvenation that the movie eludes to that far into the Jungle. But it's also implied that anyone that lives in Nausicaa's world will cough up blood and die in our type of environment meaning that if the planet ever does recover all those of Nausicaa's world will just die in the end anyway due to the environment that their bodies are used to. There are also people that live in the forest with devices to help them breathe and stuff, though it's revealed later after Nausicaa is eaten by an Ohmu and allowed to emerge from it that they produce a substance that allows people to be able to breathe in The Toxic Jungle without a mask, which a few of the others that live there end up ingesting afterwards from the substance that emerges with Nausicaa. After Miralupa dies, his brother, the actual Emperor, emerges from where he'd been submerged during his brother's reign due to the advances that their society has allowing him to live an elongated life span. Eventually things come to a head when The God Warrior is finally born in the manga and it ends up thinking Nausicaa is its mother. The Emperor's head gets chopped off and falls to the Earth below (they're on airships at the time) but the head is laughing at the apocalypse that it seems like will be assured as his head falls (his head is able to stay alive without the body due to how advanced of genetics The Empire is able to manipulate). The Torumekian Princess's brothers also end up trying to get her killed though she survives and her brothers end up coming across a sanctuary of sorts with Nausicaa in the wasteland that has all sorts of animals living there under the care of some man who has all sorts of books from The Old World. Nausicaa also heals there after she'd started to become ill from being in contact with The God Warrior (it's never stated but it's implied that she was getting Radiation Poisoning from it) and the man that oversees the sanctuary tells her that there are others hidden out there in the wastelands to preserve things from The Old World for when Earth would finally recover. After getting information about where she needs to go she sets out for The Empire's capital (the Torumekian Princes stay at the sanctuary as they enjoy it there) and the capital ends up being where Mito, other allies of Nausicaa's, and some Torumekian forces all end up converging at while the rest of the world begins to succumb to the ever-growing Toxic Jungle with survivors mainly taking refuge on plateaus and such. At the Empire's capital there is a seemingly impenetrable structure, The Crypt, that everyone tries to break into and which Nausicaa does manage to get into (as does the Vai Emperor (Kushana's step-father)). Within the Crypt it's shown to be rather creepily advanced with parts of it seeming to be like the characters are inside of some creature's organs and there's living heads without bodies that talk to them and stuff. It's essentially where The Empire has been able to get their advancements from and they had even started developing Ohmus themselves with its aide. Nausicaa ultimately makes it to The Master of The Crypt which is some entity that chooses who is to be the new ruler of The World once a previous ruler dies. The chamber also contains various pods that humans from The Old World are still alive within, waiting for the day when the Earth would finally be cleansed and liveable for them again. The World of Nausicaa essentially ends up being revealed to have been constructed by those of The Old World in a plan to clean the pollution that had ruined the planet. The Ohmu and Toxic Jungle were designed to filter it and the humans of Nausicaa's world had been created to maintain things until the world was finally fixed, at which point the people of Nausicaa's world would die off due not being able to survive in the repaired environment. The Master of the Crypt chooses Nausicaa as the new leader of the world but she rejects it calling out to The God Warrior and having it "Shine its Light" into The Crypt. The Vai Emperor who had made it into The Crypt's depths shields Nausicaa from the power that's given off as The Master of The Crypt is killed and The God Warrior dies. The Vai Emperor himself dies afterwards as everyone is able to reunite amidst the ruins, telling his step-daughter, Kushana, who is left as the leader of the Torumekians, to not kill anyone of their royal court or she would just end up killing and killing as he ended up doing. With the Empire and The Crypt in ruins, humanity's fate does not necessarily look like it might have the best future, but it is the choice that Nausicaa feels needed to be made. The ending gives a few suggestions as to what might have happened afterwards but ends by saying something along the lines of "that is not for this story to tell".
