Freddie buy a decent torque wrench with low values. Install new plugs with crush washers( as they come) clean the threads in the head if you can. Torque the plugs properly. If they come out again it’s the head thread that’s faulty.

One hour to do a service is fantastic, especially if you lubed the cables and all moving parts, checked the wheel, head and swing arm bearings, checked the brake pads and disks, checked the battery terminals, checked for tire damage and checked the pressures. PS, it’s best to drain the oil when it’s warm, set the plug gap correctly and torque the plugs. Just winding you up Freddie. As always, good content 😀

  • @seanfrank4158

Hey Freddie. You might want to have the cylinder head spark plug threads inspected to see why that spark plug keeps popping out. Or...have the spark plug properly checked with a torque wrench to ensure it's installed properly. Spark plugs don't generally just pop out during normal use.

I tend to not do routine service myself - but I did put my Rocket on a hydraulic jack at one point, take off both wheels, strip the brake discs and go to town on them with an aluminium polish and polishing discs and stuff... also tore out the entire air system and replaced that with Ramair filters, etc. So I'm not incapable, and I suppose I could just as well do the rest of the routine stuff but for some reason I just prefer to offload that to the local shop. Ride in, have them do the work, deal with the oil disposal and stuff and just chill. Great guys, and can't hurt to get an extra pair of eyes on the bike once in a while just in case they spot something, and they need income to remain in business so why not. Also, I remain a tad mystified about your riding gear choices (like, no gloves - I'd rather ride without pants than without gloves) but then again I don't wanna be that naggy a-hole in every video, and I'm not your dad, so you do you. 😂

If you and Jim wanted to put together a more in-depth video sometime, that maybe went into some instruction and explanation of process, tools and chemicals, I'd be very interested in that. I know it's not precisely the standard type of video you put out, but it would be useful. I have worked as a car detailer, and I can keep my bikes in reasonably nice shape all the time, but I'd love to see what a real pro with motorcycle-specific experience has to say about how to go at it. The Bonnie looks fantastic. I really love your bike. The 865 Triumphs were the first bikes I really fell in love with, when I was getting into motorcycling, and I don't know why I never got one. I love my Z900RS, but I still wish I had a Bonneville a lot like yours.

How can you tell someone is actually good at detailing a motorcycle specifically? They don't go insane with a high pressure washer and shove it into every nook and cranny.... awesome job, Jim the detailer! Watching that snow foam go on mostly from above and with moderate pressure was nice, and actually going in with a small brush - chef's kiss. If I were in the country and needed a detail, I'd be happy to trust him with my pride and joy. Motorcycles aren't fully water tight, especially for water coming in with massive pressure and sideways. I've seen a very highly regarded detailer just shove the nozzle of his professional grade high pressure washer into the bike in multiple locations and letting er rip, which is just not great, in my opinion. You can force water into threads and promote rusting, into gaps, even potentially into the tire if you hit the rims with high pressure in just the wrong angle, I'd say. Great work here.

As you ay, looks like a "New Bike"! I used to ride Bikes a long time ago in Southern Africa for many years - in fact worked for Honda in South Africa back in the early 80's. My pride and joy at the time was a new 1981 Honda CB750FB in Red. I rode on that between Welkom in SA to Harare in Zimbabwe a few times on my own. about a 1400KM journey one way. Of course working for a Honda Dealership I rode many other bikes that were Demo's as a company bike. Namely, CX500 Custom; CX500 Turbo; CBX550F; GL1000; CBX1000 and a CB400 Hawk. I did own a few others over the years after leaving SA, a Yamaha 180 Twin (2S), CB900FB, Kawa H2 750 (2S) and lastly a Suzuki Katana 750 in 1991. Stopped riding after that. Luckily in all that time I only had one whoopsie, I braked, (it was on the CBX550) but the Cement mixer behind me wasn't so quick and ended up bouncing me down the road! Luckily no major damage to me or the bike, just a bit sore for a few days - mainly my left Hip....??? Happy an safe travels in Scotland! ps. Really enjoyed your Sahara Trip - quite extrodinary! Thanks!

Common issue with the 500 is the wires snapping inside the rubber flexi to the boot, a very easy DIY fix!!!

Best air oil cooled retro made. I'm in Daytona, I help build these into monsters, one hit 152 mph at the AMCA twins battle on the track a couple years ago. These bikes are so stout when to take them apartyou see the fabulous engineering and quality Triumph put in them. We can get 90-110 bhp at thw ]e wheel depending on the clients specs. I've see at least two bike go well over 100.000 miles is stock trim. Ride safe.

Hi I really enjoy you take on biking, open to all views and sides which is refreshing. I have last year pasted my big bike test at middle age, I always mean to get it but with kids etc it just never seemed the right time to splash out on myself (it cost about £1000 all in). I don't have any friends who are bikers so I would really like to get out with some other bikers on a bit of a journey. My question is, how do you find out about events like the highland scramble etc and join in? Many thanks Simon

Freddy, Can we talk about choke? On a bike your age (carbureted) the choke well chokes oxygen out of the combustion cycle. . .so you have a bunch of gas and less oxygen. Gas is a great degreaser. . .So when you change your oil, it is very important to get oil up to the top of the engine quickly. By using your choke, you do increase RPM (while oil is not up top yet) and you exacerbate the problem by using choke to increase that RPM. When you are starting an engine after an oil change, I recommended hitting the starter a few times (2, 3 seconds each) to just get your oil pump pulling fresh oil. I would then start the bike (without choke if you can but THROTTLE the bike to 1,000 rpm for 30 seconds or so. . .you should hear your top end quiet down. Don’t use your choke for this. . .it increases gas in the cylinders (as a ration to air, which “cleans the oil off the sleeves. . .I say this but you have a high mileage triumph and you haven’t damaged it yet, so totally voluntary . ..but I had an engineer for a father, and I watched you start your bike after an oil change using choke (NOOO) and then let it idle at like 250 rpm with no choke (NOOOO), only to increase the RPM with choke and not the throttle (NOOOOOO). Huge fan sorry to be a wet blanket.

I have never had a bike detailed by someone else - but I often do a “big” clean on my bikes myself - especially mid or after a big expedition. It gives me a chance to check everything while I service, maintain, clean, lube and check all the bolts and screws that need tightened. One cleaning story is that In Ethiopia by Lake Gonder I was happily cleaning my missus 990 by our tent and it fell on me and the foot peg scooped out a big chunk of my shin. After getting it off me - I had to pour iodine in the hole left in my leg, get it dressed - and then poke out a sizeable lump meat and blonde hair with a screw driver and then I wondered what to do with it and so I fed it to a feral dog that seems to enjoy it. I hope I didn’t give it a taste for human flesh. I still have a big dent in my shin from that bike cleaning day and it reminds me to make sure the surface is solid and use the centre stand.

I take it you checked the spark plug gap off camera? I think you will find the Buell lightning is already a classic partly due to the few numbers they sold. Can't see why some people are unable to clean there own bike? it's not hard and I find it quite therapeutic and take pride it what I own! and never used a carwash either😜😜

If you travel up the A1 or A68 Freddie (which from Ipswich to Edinburgh you likely will) be careful for speed cameras, both fixated and mobile. I'm sure you ride steady and safely, but it is always easy to get caught out...and forewarned is forearmed! (Also bring your security devices, motorbike crime is fairly bad in Edinburgh, you don't want the bike taken before you even begin 👍🏻)

Motorbike theft is very bad in Edinburgh, they do it in broad daylight in the city centre! I’ve seen the little b#$%$%# with my own eyes. Make sure your bike is safe if you come to Edinburgh. Are you leaving from Saltire? I go there quite a bit for food and to look at all the bikes. Have a great trip!
