I feel like the first omen is this year’s SAWX, no one expected a prequel from a legacy franchise with some terrible sequels to be so good. I’m debating whether this is my number 1 or number 2 so far this year

I’m guilty as charged with not seeing the first omen yet 😮 I should be hexed lol but it like you said, so many great movies are in theaters this year! It’s gearing up to be a pretty good year for movies this year and particularly horror! I recently checked out monkey man and wow dev Patel is our newest action star fr fr!! So awesome that he directed it too! So impressive! Love the background, good thing your friends abroad got you covered with the ambience! I remember telling you I saw immaculate so I get all of the comparisons and similarities. I guess I just liked that it wasn’t tied to a franchise but maybe thats not a bad thing anymore. I too wasn’t the biggest fan of the omen franchise but I’m glad to hear that this new movie is doing really well! I assume it’s connected to the original ‘76 film and not like the remake or anything so it’ll be trippy seeing a modern prequel for a horror classic. Hearing about the protest scenes reminds me a bit of the og exorcist and confirms my feeling that those franchises kinda influence each other Thank you daughter of satan for keeping your subjects fed with what we’re missing and I know your father is proud of all the souls you’ve claimed!

I totally get what you're trying to say about some of the basic horror element stuff being predictable, but what shocked me about this film was how well-executed/visually gorgeous the jump scares truly were-. Also, it's kinda crazy to think that The Nun II had slightly more of a budget than The First Omen. Would love do see you and Sweet N' Spooky do a compare and contrast spoiler-y review of Immaculate vs The First Omen, and how both your feelings about Immaculate changed (or didn't change) after seeing The First Omen.

Thanks for the in-depth review of this new horror gem. I saw it opening night, and there were only about 10 people in the auditorium. I really liked how the 70s were captured, with the color grading, clothes, disco music. etc. You commented once or twice on Catholicism, and as a Catholic and someone who also only did a year of Catholic school, the depiction or use of Catholicism in horror movies often works because Catholicism is a litty creepy and scary, especially if you figure in all of the child abuse. Most of my family have stopped going to Catholic mass because they can't separate the positive parts of attending mass ( fellowship, worship) from the heinous things that the Church has condoned. That being said, the writer/ director did a stellar job on this sequel, and in a perfect world, Nell Tiger Free would be getting an Oscar nomination about 8 or 9 months from now.

I first saw Nell Tiger Free in a horror show called Servant on Apple TV, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, also starring Rupert Grint. Excellent show and one of my favorites to rewatch!! It is a true Shyamalan horror and a beautiful atmospheric masterpiece. I think it might be my favorite work of his. It was also refreshing to see Rupert get the screen time he deserves, that man is a true talent!!

I love the original 1976 movie. It's the atmosphere and the way they approached it in a real world scenario. The deaths were freak accidents yet we as the viewer know there's a sinister force at play. The photography played a significant role in it too with the discrepancy's that were similar to how the victims die, hence being prophetic for what is a prophecy from a story in the bible. You've got Robert Thorne, a man with everything, American ambassador, happily married, clearly has wealth, and his whole life spirals out of control in front of his eyes over this child. He finds out they killed his first born to plant Damien. They then kill his wife. This leads him to believing everything he's been told by Father Brennan and Bugenhagen towards the end. Then, Robert having to come to terms and the realisation that he has to kill a child on hallowed ground. Father Brennan, played brilliantly by Patrick Troughton comes across as an unhinged ranting and raving mad man which is backed up by the fact that he's pumped full of morphine because he's riddled with cancer, yet everything he said was true. He also knew Mrs. Thorne was pregnant when Robert didn't. Let's not forget the animals freaking out at the sight of Damien, him freaking out at the church, The Nanny killing herself on his 5th birthday, and the planting of Mrs. Baylock as the new nanny who was clearly part of the cult. And Damien at the end with the president of the United States of America, now that was ominous, with his little smile. As for the prequel, I really enjoyed it. Whatever about the mother in this against what we were lead to believe in the original, I wish they had done something similar with what they had done with the rottweillers in the original to add to the depravity of what they were doing to bring about the birth of the antichrist. Just a short snippet of an actual jackal. This would have added to that real world scenario that they done so well in the original. My only gripe in the first omen was Father Brennan, don't get me wrong, it was played brilliantly by Ralph Ineson, but the continuity of the character in relation to the original felt off. In the original, Father Brennan claimed he was at the birth, so, for the prequel, where was he when Damien was being born??? And what about Father Brennan also having the mark of the beast on his inner thigh???

I was very surprised by the high quality of the movie. The plot is fine, the lead actress is terrific at portraying the protagonit, the film is beautifully shot. A lot of heart was put to it. As far as profit goes maybe the Omen will break even after all if not too much was spend on marketing. I am also very curious about Stevenson's next movie. She is a young and looks like a very promising director.

I wasn't a big fan of the first omen. To me they took elements that would've been more in line with Rosemary's baby. I will say that all the actors were great and the film looks amazing. I also found it way too slow and then wasn't a huge fan of the random jump scares they threw in. I didn't really think they needed the "it's all for you" scene in this movie it felt pointless to me and then they use the same nun for that other scene where she comes out of the dark. I liked the whole twin sister anti antichrist possibility since it's definitely a way to get more sequels. I however did not like the change of Damian being born from a jackal to instead being conceived by the church's dungeon sex demon(again stuff that would've worked better in Rosemary's baby). Overall I just don't feel like this film was for me but at least we have something bew to send people back to the original. Watching first omen has me wanting to rewatch omen 3 which I probably woul have revisited otherwise.

This is gonna sound stupid, but bear with me. This feels like a horror equivalent to Puss in Boots the Last Wish. Continuations/additions of a long finished series that completely blow expectations. I don't really like The Omen despite its good elements like the score and scenes like the birthday party so I was dismissive of this at first. Eventually I opened up to it and just saw it and thoroughly love it. Going off what you were saying about Nell's teeth I really appreciated seeing Sonia Braga in this who's a very famous Brazilian actress that clearly didn't juice her face up in botox and fillers. Its beautiful to see a mature woman as she is. As a Possession fan when people were starting those comparisions I was like "oh really?". And it was great and didn't feel derivative, nor did the callbacks to the original Omen feel derivative either. I would definitely see this movie again and probably will buy it.

Last movie we saw ( Saw X) I went to pee and missed a whole scene. I went after Diego's test and missed most of the others getting kidnapped. I can't help it, I get so thirty. But, I digress. Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I might like it better than Saw X. I don't know both were great. The lead actress in this was stellar. I had never seen her before. Enjoyed your review.

Sucks that it probably won't break even, but not every great movie is a hit at the BO. Long term, people are going to appreciate it a lot more. Nell Tiger Free is a fantastic actress and Arkasha Stevenson has a bright future as a director. P.S. Check out Servant. Nell is really good in that.

Possible spoilers: While I absolutely agree that they should have just taken out that younger male priest and the burned nun screaming at her, for me the moment in that scene where she was locked in the room telling herself “it’s not real” over and over and then someone else whispers “what’s not real?” was very memorable. They did a great job building tension with the creature moving in the dark too. It was all just shot so well, but maybe they still could have worked that in a different way that didn’t need the priest to rescue her. Either way, I’m so excited to see what Arkasha Stephenson does next!

The protagonist and her roommate were not nuns yet- they were novices(nuns in training). Novices and priest candidates can get pretty wild especially as they get close to the end of their training. It almost a given that before they take their vows, they are going to get everything out of their system.

This movie started out as a slow burn for me, I loved how they paced this movie, and built the story and characters in this movie. This was really well acted, really well written and the final act paid off huge for me. I was very impressed with this movie. 8.5 out of 10. I'm glad I watched this.

SPOILERS AHEAD..... The First Omen is well made & acted, though a little slow & disjointed in the first 40 minutes, but my biggest problem with it is the way it breaks the lore / continuity of the original Omen. In the original Father Brennan goes to Thorn to try to atone for his role in Damien's birth & placing him with the Thorn family. In The First Omen, he's trying to thwart Damine's birth the entire time. An even bigger issue is that in The Omen Damien is born of a Jackal, which Thorn & the reporter Jennings, find the bones of in the graveyard alongside the bones of Thorn's actual son. Damien is not born of a human woman, as seen in the First Omen. Also if Damine's twin sister, a dumb idea to start with, isn't inherently evil then why are we to assume Damien is & must be destroyed? On top of that, the notion that this secret society's plan to birth the Antichrist is an attempt to bring people back to God / The Church is dumb.

One of THE worst movies I've ever seen. As bad as Exorcist Believer, Exorcist 2, the 2 Exorcist prequels and worse than the last 3 Halloween movies. Late night with the Devil was får superior on a much smaller budget. Even Immaculate was marginally better. But not by much. A truly dreadful movie😊.. Not even the cinematography and locations could save it.
