What the heck? And I though only diesel engines can get so many miles. Well, I'm an European so here most of the high milage cars are diesel. How capable is as an off roader? I plan on getting a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, but in case I won't have the money I need I might get an oldie like this Jeep Grand Cherokee. What do you think? Thanks.

My Folks have had their ‘94 Grand Cherokee with the factory 5 speed manual transmission since new in August of 1994. It’s been quite a good vehicle over the years.

My father had a 95 5.2 limited and was pretty reliable.

I beat the hell out of mine and the transmission kept right on ticking. The only time I have seen those jeep 4 speeds go out is from being neglected by not adding fluids. Believe It or not I have even seen one run dry, then get topped off and drive home. Also, the 5.2/318 v8 is the best engine ever. My dodge Dakota is still going strong with 425,000 miles and its original drivetrain.

Love my 97 ZJ. Great value for a capable offroader. Everyone loves the XJs, but the ZJs have the same front end, you get coils on all four corners, plus the 96-98 get rear disk brakes. I also love my 5.2 (318). Currently lifted 4.5 inches, 33 inch tires, rear is locked, winch, and snorkel.

My 95 has rear disks, which is great I hate drum brakes.

Tommy this doesn't have a bad transmission. This has an AW4. Look at the shifter 1/2 on the same position.

This is correct. You hit the jackpot with an early '93 that has the aw4. From mid '93 on they had the crappy 42re.

@@jasonferguson1890 The 42re while nowhere as good as the Toyota auto is still a decent transmission. The GM 4L60e was the really bad transmission of that era.

Came here to say the same.👍 Also the "Garbage" transmissions could and do live a long life with proper heat management. I have yet to kill one after adding a decent cooler. Don't tell anyone as I am enjoying the current prices.

@@ericharrison619 any transmission is happier with a trans cooler, have done it to my 42re and its still going great after i put 45k miles on it in just the last year(fresh fluid and it also has 235k on the original trans 😅) another reason they can go if i recall they have an anti drainback valve that can fail and the pump will run dry on the first drive after a couple of days and that can usually kill them pretty quick.

Came here to say this 4.0 I6 with the AW4 is the BEST COMBO. Add full time 4WD and you’ve got a true GEM

227,500 miles on my 1995 GC 4.0. Runs great. Off-road it often. Comfy, in great condition and I'll keep it as long as I can. NP 242 transfer case is so fun! Averages 18 mpgs. Leaks when it feels like it

My 95 Grand Cherokee went over 256K on the original engine and trans when I sold it. It had the Aisin trans and it was fine as long as you service it regularly. Son has a 98 GC with 180K and still going strong. These are the best of all the Grand Cherokees in my opinion

Absolutely agree. My 1998 has 311,000 original miles on everything but the radiator and transmission. Radiator left at 310k and trans at 289k, but I've had no issues since. Second owner here. Maintenance matters and will make them run and drive almost indefinitely.

I own a 1996 ZJ that I bought new. It has the 318 V8. It has just over 150,000 miles and is all stock. I've kept up with the maintenance and replaced entire systems with stock parts. Other than the maker of this fine video, does anyone else think these are going up in value?

That early ZJ would have had the AW-4 transmission just like the XJ instead of the not so great 42re! So cool to see that one in mint condition!

i absolutely loved my 97 5.2 laredo so much as a first car, that i swapped a 5.9 & an NV3500 5 speed manual in it. shes come a long way with me.

One thing you will HAVE to inspect is under the plastic rocker covers and door moulding...been there with my two all original ZJs. I also have 9 all original XJ Cherokees from the the first three AMC years 84 85 86 to the Daimler-Chrysler last years. Between me and my brothers we have 23 XJs. 🍻🍻

Do a review another forgotten classic, an ZJ Orvis Edition with the Upcountry Package. Love mine with the 5.2, I'm pulling fullsize trucks out of mud and snow with this little beast.

My parents used to own an 98' Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0l straight six and getting to see one of these ZJ Grand Cherokees especially one with the 4.0l straight six inside and out brought back so many childhood memories of being driven around in our old Jeep. It's ashamed our old Grand Cherokee was totaled because my dad had the engine rebuilt not to long before it got totaled after having it hit 300k miles and was always such a good vehicle to us growing up when I was a kid.

First car I ever rode in from the hospital after being born in 01, my parents was a 97, my parents got it from my grandpa after he passed away in 97

@@top4runner99 I had two grandparents that drove new trucks. One always drove a new Ford. The other a new Chevy. But my Grandmother loved Camaros and drove an 84 Camaro Berlinetta she bought new, and then traded it for a new 95 Camaro that she drove well in to her 80's. She and I would always talk cars and had that in common.

My old man had a 95 ZJ Limited. We put over half a million kilometres on it before having to put her down. The 4.0 never hesitated and the trans was only serviced once in its lifespan (fluid/filter). One of the best and most reliable vehicles we’ve ever had in the family.

I just bought a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited for 3800 it has 100k miles on it, and it's in mint condition. It has a 5.2 L V8 and full-time AWD/ with 4 low, I'm putting 1095.00 into it to replace stuff that wears. But so with labor, I have a nice Jeep for under 6k :)

I still have my 95. I’ve modded it over the years to keep it going, and for fun.

I have only owned 4.0 AMC 6 cylinders for the last 25 years. I still own the first one I bought it has 485000 miles on it I've kept up with the maintenance every time it had an oil leak I fixed it. I would drive it to Canada tomorrow and I live in Memphis Tennessee

For sure. Every once in a while some old original vehicle shows up with crazy low miles like this. People are amazed when they see my wife's 2002 BMW 325 has only 41,000. Low to be sure but nothing compared to this Jeep. If people only knew what was out there.

My second car was a 94 grand Cherokee and I genuinely loved it and happen to know it’s still running strong. Also if you live in the snow that all time 4wd is crazy capable and confidence inspiring when the roads get slick.

I currently have 1 1998 zj limited with full time 4wd and 318 5.2l v8 with 270,000 miles. Also i have a 96 xj with 250,000 miles with the 4.0. Both are still daily drivers.

This really makes me miss my 98’ Limited with the 5.2...It was in mint condition but the head gasket blew.

I have a 98 5.9 Limited with 4 1/2" of lift, long arm front, short arm rear, front ARB bumper and rear RockHard swingaway carrier. It can go whever I have enough guts to point it. It also has lockers front and rear with 33X10.5X15 tires and a Ford Explorer 8.8 rear axle for dependability. Best part is I bought it off Ebay last Labor Day and it only had 78,328 miles! It now has 80,500 miles and should last me a while in AZ weather.

Where do you go in AZ?

I have a '96 ZJ as a project vehicle. I got it because the rear axle housing was broken. And it ate 2 differentials. I upgraded it to a remanufactured Dana 44 with a TrueTrac differential. Everything else is stock. It had a severe death wobble. So I replaced all the control arms and shocks, plus the track bar. It has stock alloy wheels running 255/70-15 tires. Running in the Mojave desert, the ZJ has been unstoppable so far. It just seems to go anywhere. Sure more power would be nice. And the transmission worries me. But I have seriously been considering swapping in a Cummins R2.8. Even if I keep the 4.0L engine. I really would like to put in a ZF 8-speed. When I refurbish the front axle. A locker of some kind will be installed. And the dash will get upgrades. Since it has OBD2, a modern information device like a Bank's iDash or the Edge tablet will be installed. Along with an improved radio that accepts SiriusXM. The WJ is a fat pig compared to the ZJ. And my friends that have XJ project vehicles are envious of the room of the ZJ.

I just got a 96 grand Cherokee Laredo. so far so good have always wanted a first gen grand Cherokee glad to have it

Awesome video. 2nd owner of a '95 ZJ with the 4.0, 373s and 231 factory installed and its the best vehicle ive ever owned. 260k and ill probably be buried in it. Im 36 so hopefully we've got a few more miles left together. Glad to see so many other folks that love their ZJs like i do.

I got two 98s, both have been awesome. One was prebuilt and been great the other I got out of a mechanics field before he scrapped it

Hi, Tommy. Have to say that you do have a good taste in cars, at least in older, more classic ones. This Grand Cherokee is one of the cars from my childhood that I dreamed about, right up there with E30 3-series. Those are cars that I'd be happy to have even today, without caveats.

Favourite generation of Grand Cherokee. Had a 94, it was rotted out (due to rust), burned oil, but it just kept on trucking. I can confirm the transmission was bad, when it was near its end, it could barely climb a hill or take any sort of incline at speed highway speed.

My 97 and an 04 ZJ. I sold them but they are solid runners and still running today.

My first car was the little bro of this car (XJ). I loved that thing.

Purchased a 4.0 zj that was manual swapped. It has a piston slap at about 2.5k rpms but she still rips, no leaks doesn't burn oil and at 275k mil3s ^.^

just got a zj 2 weeks ago... i'm at least as excited as Tommy is about this one.

Wow, I love that this exists, it's so minty-fresh! I love zj's, I think they may be the best Jeep. I had a 97 that was 15 years old when I finally got rid of it, and it was not because of mechanical issues, but the fact that 15 New England winter has had taken their toll on the structure. In 12 years of ownership, it never left me stranded, and always got me where I needed to go. It had almost 170k when I got rid of it, and no transmission issues, and the engine didn't even use any oil during the 6k mile interval I was using. Now I have a 5th gen 4Runner, and I honestly think that the ZJ's a better vehicle. I never had any issues with the transmission in my ZJ, and when they came out in 1992, 190hp was actually quite a bit. Everyone else's V6 was closer to the 140 or 150 HP mark. I think the second most powerful V6 was the 4.3 in the GM SUVs, it made 165ish.

TOMMY - Please hold back your reservations on the transmission. There was an early Aisin 4-speed automatic model that was great. The PRNDL indicator allowed all the way to “1” if you’re looking at the lever. Plus, if you maintain them, the Chrysler auto can make it just fine. My last 318 V8 AWD had 183,000 when I got rid of it, and my last 4.0L 6cyl 2wd had 287,000 on it.

I have an early 93. The automatic transmissions on the early ZJ was the AW4 not the junkie 42RE that you're thinking of. Other than that you summed things up pretty well.

I love my 5.2l ZJ. The last good Grand Cherokee. (Besides the 5.9l)

That’s funny that the last two classic suv videos done is the 1995 Pathfinder and Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokee V8 and I have both sitting in the driveway as daily drivers

I still daily drive a 98 ZJ Auto with the NV249. It’s my first vehicle and I’ve owned it for about 11 years. It will never be forgotten by me.

I have a nov 92 Jeep ZJ I6 with the AW4 transmission with 290k on the clock. The trans has never been rebuilt and is running fine.

I have a grand cherokee inline6 iron block. Year 2000. Been parked up for 2 years. Changed the gas pump , and drove it of. Month later blew a radiator hose & drove it up to 260 degrees F , changed radiator , hoses and fan clutch and runs perfect. Electric sustenta Shet.

Looks like the ZJ they showed on stage during the unveil. You guys should definitely get one for the channel since you guys had the WJ go on TFL Bids. These need some mainstream love,luckily Legit Street Cars has a 5.9 Limited. Also that early build ZJ has the AW4 used in the XJ much more reliable after 93 model year they dropped it. You can tell but the selector having 3 then 1-2 instead of OD, D, 2 ,1 on the 42RE.

Own a 1996, with a 5.2, own it now for 22 years, never a issue, bad fuel economy, but it’s a v8, wish I could buy a new one! Do it in a heartbeat!!

I had the same rims on my 96 Cherokee. I would love to own that Grand Cherokee.

my wife drove an 01 XJ from about 60K miles until we sold it with about 220K miles. 4.0 was a great engine and AW4 was a solid transmission. ONLY reason I didn't keep it was it was 2WD.

Nothing at all wrong with the 42RE. Keep the kickdown cable and bands adjusted, and keep it full of fresh Mopar ATF+4, and it'll last a long time.

I agree I have owned several 42re Transmissions it only had one that would slip round corners every once in awhile but it had 350,000 Mi on it as well so slipping around corners is okay.

Just add an external cooler that bypasses the radiator which has a check valve that jams up and stops fluid flow. That's what kills 42RE transmissions in the ZJ.

@jayxtreme6 false. The check valve is in the return line. You have to run the tank cooler in series with the external cooler, otherwise the fluid will not reach proper operating temp when ambient air temperatures are below freezing. Remember, ATF+4, the only fluid allowed by Chrysler, is a synthetic that works best at 180°. If you don't get it to that temp, it will not flow correctly.

Had a 98 Zj Laredo 4.0 4x4 for 4yrs and man that thing was a blast. It had its issues but hey what jeep don’t right? The last year I had omg 😆 blew the rear spider gears out of it took two weeks to get it fixed since it was all bound up then I’d say two weeks later it blew them out again but not before the front lower passenger side control arm snapped off the uni body mount. Welded that up half assed and it actually drove down the road at 80mph without problems. Anyways it blew the spider gears again just backing into the driveway yet it also blew a hole through the top of the housing a little bigger then a quarter. Got new gears again but the ring gear was chipped so I filed it all day and put it all together with a bolt and a lot of JB weld plugged that hole in the housing oh did I mention the diff cover had holes in it also from some gear going around the ring gear while driving yeah that was also JB welded up. After that took it out of the garage and beat the dog piss out of it in the middle of the Illinois winter last year. I’d probably buy another and almost did but found a lifted 05 Wk Laredo 4.7 AWD so I went with that. Loved the Zj and always will have a soft spot in my heart for them.

Just bought a 98' Laredo with the 318V8 and someone swapped in a NP242. 180k miles and being a Minnesota car its whole life its not all too rusted. For 3,000 bucks and everything works except ABS, airbags, and the air con. It's going to be a winter car so air con doesn't matter to me. Airbags shouldn't be an issue, only once if anything. ABS is something I'd like to have, but not necessary. It runs incredibly smooth. It does shift kinda hard into drive from park and reverse.

Basically every old 4x4 is exploding in value because new trucks and suv's with 4x4 are crazy expensive, pre owned are not far behind in price to new ones and older models (2010ish) are still above 10k, that leaves the mid 2000s and 90s 4x4's as the only viable option for us poor people, but now even those are getting out of reach :(

I had a 1998 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo I had it for almost 2 years but no one here in my hometown could figure out why the heat wasn't working we figured out that it was the hoses inside the dash but we just didn't have the time to take it apart so I ended up trading in the jeep if he hadn't been for the heater problem Or heat problem I'd still have it took it up in the mountains it was great maybe sometime I'll get another one thanks for your video

We own a 2001 WJ and it has gotten through some truly unintended muddy conditions. I will someday own a Wrangler and love Jeeps!!!

Happy owner from a 97 ZJ V8 Orvis edition. Really enjoy driving it out for camping/fishing on weekends. 279k kms all original. This edition is one of my favourites Grand Cherokees ever.

The American Lada Niva. Both use a unibody platform but are also very capable off roading.

Im thinking about buying a Dodge W200 5.2L V8 automatic 1976. Are these good and trustworthy on quality of the entire truck? Like how fast does something break? According to car dealer its at 42.793km so it hasnt seen much so it hasnt degraded alot.

David Tracey over at Jalopnik has 2 manual transmission ZJ's. It might even be 3. I know he's combining 2 of them to make 1 good one.

I owned a Cherokee 2.5 in the early 90's and bought a used '97 Grand Cherokee 4.0 sometime in the early 2000's. People say the Toyota RX300 was the first 'nice' driving luxury SUV but the Grand Cherokee came first in my opinion. Really nice to drive, the 4.0 inline 6 was super smooth, reliable and powerful for the time and had a sleek design that looks good even today. Fond memories.

I got 95 with a long arm kit will go everywhere you need to go motor gas over 250,000 and still running great as a daily

Ive had litterally dozens of these, currently have 2 I have given to my kids and have never had a single transmission issue.

I had a 93 Grand Wagoneer with 200k. I never should have sold it, it was probably one of the coolest vehicles I've ever had

The early zjs still had the same AW4 automatic as the XJs which are bulletproof. Also XJs are not that expensive. Bought my 87 cherokee pioneer for 3500 bucks w 120k miles. 4.0 aw4 4x4 with no power options

Man, this thing is gorgeous. None of those gauges are faded unlike my 2004. It looks brand new. Back in '98 in when I was 20 I was approved for a 1995 Blue Laredo 4x4 which was beautiful. I went with a 1996 Explorer instead, higher payment but great vehicle BTW!, I always wondered how I much fun I could have had with the Grand Cherokee. Got my 2004 (4.0) a few years later and its nasty dirty right now. This makes me want to clean it up. :D

Hey Tommy!!!! The ZJ was revolutionary then, comfortable in the front, but my second job at that time had several and you wanted the 4 litre, the V8s were not very good in comparison. I am a huge fan of the 4.0 litres!! They drove pretty nice for the time. That Grand Cherokee L looks much better than I anticipated. They did a great job masking the additional length. That one looked pretty tall. Maybe air bags in the high position?? Fun review!

@@renli3d - you did well. They were always needing something yet the 4 litres just ran. Change oil & keep on going. They were driven to about 125,000 miles and sold at auction. A couple of guys got the 4 litres. They wouldn’t even try bidding on the 8s. They saw how much time they were in the shop. I think owning the vehicle yourself makes a big difference. Fleet vehicles,,,,,. They saw about 60% gravel roads as well.

I own a ‘97 grand cherokee bought it for $1600 with 139k miles on the dash. clean as hell and doesn’t have any MAJOR issues (needs some love tho seeing as it’s a 26 year old suv lol)

I had the 1994 metallic blue grand Cherokee lifted. It was basic but I miss that thing so much. I have the 2015 GC limited with the luxury package and I love it but not like my 94.

Tommy the best Engine for the first Generation was the 5.2 liter V8!! Trust me

4.0l for reliability. 5.9 for power.

Besides the XJ one of my favorite 4x4s.

I have a 98 zj, out of the box stock. Only 146k on it. 4.0 and auto. Runs great only problem is an intermittent electrical issue. Ign cuts out momentarily now and again. Have no plans on getting rid of it. Also had a 96 which was an absolute tank. Til it got smashed just enough that ins totalled it. Love em tho. Not really interested in the new ones. Not getting one any newer than the 04 i had. Selectrac is the only way to go. Cant have as much fun with fulltime 4wd.

I miss my 96 zj. 5.2 with a limited interior. Im holding out for a 5.9 one day.

I've never seen a manual 4.0 growing up my dad had three Jeeps I have also had a 96 Cherokee classic a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo and I currently own a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition and the friends are just as reliable as the motors and again I have never seen a 4 L manual ever

I have a question !!! I own a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8 . The question is how fast can I go on 2nd gear ? It has a problem going over 2000 rpm’s going uphill but when I put it on second it drives just fine uphill . If anyone knows how fast I can drive in 2nd gear it’ll be appreciated . Thank you .

I have a 98 5.2 Special Edition that I have daily with 65000 miles. Bought it 3 years ago with 37000 miles one owner. It's in mint original condition. Get looks and compliments

Quadtrac II transfer case. Definitely not my favorite. My 04 wj had it, the only thing good about it was the low range 4 low. Not a fan of not being in control.

I did not read through all the comments, so not sure if this was already mentioned: the ZJ in this video has an AW4 transmission which actually are known for being just about as bulletproof as the 4.0 engine. On the other hand, the 42RE (late '93-'98 4.0s) and 44RE ('96-'98 5.2 V8s) Chrysler transmissions aren't exactly good, and even the slightly heavier duty 46RE ('98 5.9) and 46RH ('93-'95 5.2s) aren't the best transmissions as stock.

the transmissions were fine, it was lack of maintenance that did them in.. they need fluid changes every 25-35k miles... ppl drove em to 100k miles and wondered why the transmissions broke.. o ut 98 zj 4.0 has 450k miles on its engine and 42re transmission.. no rebuild

I got a 4.0 in a 94 and it hasn't ever had issues besides a sloppy transmission and bad steering issues
