Technique and age has got to do with it. Malinin started early which is a great strategy! And he went straight and then did a back entry, which is the best technique to get 4A. Hanyu does it a bit different because he has his own style but he'll get it in his own time. Just proud of Malinin. He'll be able to polish his as he continues to perform it in competitions.
@huiyinglu4514
Жыл бұрын
@@pennyinheaven : could you explain what's back entry? Hanyu followed the classic Axel jump definition: take off left forward outside edge. His left foot skates "forward" toward outside (his right foot followed) to take off (his left foot did not skate toward outside too much before leaving the ice), his right foot forward rotate almost the same time. I see lots top skater skate 3A (including Nathan Chen, Kamila, Mao Asada) that way. To be honest, Ilia's jump confused me a lot: when he skate forward (his right foot follow) with his hands down, he continue to slide left (or outside) about 90 degree, then his left foot hold off (or skid??? or simply reduce the speed), timestamp: 0:47. His right foot lift high, give a power kick/or forward rotate. His left foot just stretch up and rotate. Timestamp: 0:48. He does not look like follow the Axel jump definition: take off left forward outside edge since there is no "forward"/or "outside" force, there is only "upward" force to lift up his left foot. Besides above, turning 90 degree may introduce other force like centrifugal force. This will be different than take off forward.

In that video, he mentioned his left foot left the ice less than 45 degree away from the straight forward. He also talked about take off angle like 90 degree. Besides, there are pictures showing his continuous motions on the ice. He talked about when took off, his left toe-pick touch the ice etc. I didn't quite get why he specifically mentioned toe-pick. I watched quite a few Axel jump video (in slow motion mode). I think I understand a little bit more about that edge jump.

Lot's people said they like ISU increases the BV for 4A - imo, 12.5 is good and don't let GOE go above 1. (remain what it is now is good enough). Why? 1) ISU let go the pre-rotation - I don't want to be specific to Ilia (he slide about 90 degree after he skated forward). Today many skaters pre-rotate in 3A. The definition of Axel jump is "take off left forward outside edge". The reason why Axel jump is hardest jump is it taking off "forward" (before taking off, skaters need to skate forward) on left leg, while the skaters need to do forward rotation on their right leg - these are all done without the help of toe-pick. Increase BV may let a lot cheating jumps become valid. Now allow 90 degree of pre-rotation already deviate from original Axel jump definition. It's actual not that hard if we allow pre-rotate. (Try your both leg - both leg have speed toward forward is harder, compare to turn 90 degree of your body then jump). Besides pre-rotate 90 degree may introduce some other force - like centrifugal force. ISU need to do some investigation before doing anything further to promote this jump. Don't distort original idea/value of Axel jump. 2) 4A is really extra. Skaters need to focus on stabilize other basic jumps - don't count on landing a 4A as a short cut to gain big advantage by sacrifice their basic jump quality.

Malinin well done! It's quite early in the season and there's still a whole lot to improve as he continues to perform this one comp to another. Just imagine how this will look like at the end of the season! Seems like he has a lot of power but lacking in stamina for consistency, he's just 17 after all. He's definitely gonna improve in the years to come but he's already making waves. This is honestly how I imagined Hanyu's 4A would be like, just drop the twizzles, go straight to the jump but of course it's not his style. He'll get it in his own time outside the pressure of comps.
@huiyinglu4514
Жыл бұрын
The approach Ilia used is different from Hanyu. Today ISU allows pre-rotate for jumps. Hanyu's Axel jump (3A or 4A) starts like: left foot skate forward (right foot follow behind) toward outside then took off (his left foot leave the ice quite early - he skate less than 45 degree before leave ice). His right foot do a forward rotation almost the same time. It seems he has some forwarding speed (velocity) on his left foot while his right foot did forward rotation. His right foot is not easy to jump high if he has forwarding speed on his left foot. In Ilia's case: his left foot skate forward (his right foot follow behind), then his left foot skate to the left (or outside) about 90 degree. Then looks like his left foot hold off (skid???, or just reduce the speed). His right foot gave a power kick/forward rotation. When he lift up his right foot for forward rotation, his left foot does not seem to have much forwarding speed. He may jump higher this way. His left foot then stretched up and took off with upward force (timestamp: 048). But at the meanwhile, his jump did not look like follow the Axel jump definition "take off left forward outside edge". (because he has skated toward left/outside for 90 degree then hold off). Besides above, turning 90 degree may introduce other force like centrifugal force. This will be different than take off forward.

For real! 😂 I'm a casual fs fan so was quite surprised when suddenly news of Ilia's 4A broke out with very minimum footage and (for me) such a sudden time. I read that many thought he was going to debut it in a bigger competition that will be held in a few weeks (where there will be more audience & media coverage) but then already did it here. I don't know much about this reasoning nor Ilia personally as a skater himself, but could it be to avoid the pressure from being watched by a lot of audience both on site amd online? If so, I totally understand and applaud him for deciding it where then he really did could perform the jump flawlessly.
He slayed

@@DeepSeas.. no, Zhou deserved to be there. He had quads in long and short. Iirc, Brown had one quad in the long and fell on it. There is no comparison. Zhou worked very hard to be in the best shape he could be for the Olympics and clearly deserved his spot. He got robbed out of competing by what was likely a false positive COVID test. Idk why people defend Brown so heavily. He just does not have the technical skills to make the podium internationally. The spot would have been better spent on Malinin to give him some Olympic experience to lead into the next games (and possibly a medal). There was no point in sending Brown when he had zero chance at a medal. Also, nationals scores are always a little inflated compared to international scores. Perhaps you can supply an apt comparison of Zhou's performances that shows he got an extra 20 point compared to what he received elsewhere for a comparable performance? I felt like Brown was really propped up because they wanted an excuse to send him. He was 13 points behind Malinin. Never medaled at World's. His best international showing is a silver at Four Continents in 2020. Not exactly an achievement. Zhou has 2 World bronze medals. Idk how you can argue that Zhou should have stayed home instead of Brown.
