Sure it was that's why are war films made.. to scare people. but still believe Stalingrad 1993 was more realistic and terrifying. This felt sometimes unreal if you look at details, dont believe that they would shoot at tank with rifles nor they would be so surprised by seeing a tank as they were already produced. One of the reasons why there were barbed wires.. as tank would get his tracks stuck.

The heartbreaking detail for me, is that despite all of the effort put in by men on every side, their territory moved by feet and not miles, all the while more of them were dying from the various worst of illnesses than they were dying from combat. These men came home after years of watching their friends die fighting for a few hundred feet of trench, it's no wonder how a second world war happened with the following generation. I cannot imagine even hearing those stories first-hand from the men who experienced it all, and what that does to the psyche to even hear about all that experience, much less experiencing it first-hand to the level that it locks sounds, sights, tastes and smells from it into your memory forever.

This is one of my favourite WW1 movies. People went into war thinking it would be a few weeks or months, and they would be charging on steads like in the middle ages. But they were dragged into a 4 year hellscape in some of the most gruesome conditions, and facing the most destructive weapons known to europe at that point.

Not really. This Scene takes place in 1918... just days before the war ends. By that point, Tanks had been around some 2 years, and even Germany had their own versions. Tanks were well known about, and both sides had already figured out how to deal with them. They weren't these shocking things that struck fear into the enemy. If anything, tanks were far easier on the troops, as at least these enemies were easier to kill with artillery barrages, or even well placed explosives, when compared to the human waves.

Context of clip: this is taken from the ww1 film ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ basically in this clip the Germans (soldiers eating) had just liberated a French trench and started eating their rations. And as you can see the tanks (French tanks) heard the Germans were attacking and stormed over the trenches crushing soldiers and shooting them with machine guns.

This movie is generally accepted to be quite accurate as far as movies go. Obviously none are perfect. I haven't yet seen it, but from what I've heard and seen of it, I'd like to. Keep in mind the caption the uploader put on this video is indeed incorrect. This tank appears to be a late-war French design, certainly not the first tanks to be used in combat, as anyone knows. Also they're in a recently captured French trench, which explains the relative abundance of food compared to what would have been expected to be seen in the average German or Austro-Hungarian trench by that point in the war, at least in my mind.

It was actually very common to rapid fire at enemy tanks even with small caliber rifles, although the possibility for doing damage was minimal it still had a great effect on the tank crew as the loud noise irritates and small metal pieces flew through the interior damaging equipment and crew. So it was not meant to penetrate the front armor, but to damage the guns, lenses and tracks of the tank.

This is a real story : Translated into English from a biography of a german soldier's book : _September 15, 1916_ _This morning, we heard a dull and regular noise that came from no man's land. We thought it was the enemy artillery that was preparing to fire, but we did not see any projectiles whistling over our heads. We looked through the loopholes of our trenches, and we saw strange shapes that moved slowly towards us. They looked like iron boxes mounted on tracks, with cannons and machine guns that came out of all sides. We had never seen such war machines. We thought they were monsters sent by the devil to annihilate us._ _We opened fire with our rifles and machine guns, but the bullets bounced off the armor of the tanks without stopping them. Some were hit by our shells or were blocked by obstacles, but others continued their inexorable progress. They crossed our barbed wire as if nothing had happened, and reached our lines. They fired on our positions with incredible violence, wreaking havoc among our comrades. Some tried to flee, but they were mowed down by the machine guns. Others tried to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat, but they were crushed under the tracks or pierced by the bayonets of the English infantrymen who followed the tanks._ _I was lucky enough to survive this massacre, by hiding in a shell hole. I saw a tank pass a few meters from me. It was painted brown and bore the number 705. It had a red cross on the side, which meant it was carrying wounded. It was escorted by two English soldiers who looked at me with contempt. I felt powerless and humiliated. I wondered how we could resist this new weapon that seemed invincible. I wondered if the war was lost for us..._

Tanks were quite frightening when they first appeared although that fear was quickly dispelled when out of the initial 32, only about 8 actually reached the enemy line through mechanical failure, terrain and a mix of enemy artillery fire. Still a horrifying sight to see something like that inexorably walking towards you at walking pace while rifle rounds just bounce of it.

It was even worse in WW2. Everything the allies thought they knew about armored warfare the Germans would just stampede right over them or make them suffer for every step they took towards them, there's documentaries about Sherman crew members hearing the Panthers high velocity rounds and then surviving penetration with the round ripping right out the other side completely and clean. And the real time PTSD Churchill and Stuart tankers had when going over a hill and seeing a tiger 1 for the first time reporting on the battlefield and seeing it sit there and just casually claim the lives of everything it's gun looked at. Tanks are no joke even if our anti tank tactics have evolved.
