Great start. Your students are really lucky. I’m a college professor and a parent. I think parents (myself included) have come to rely too much on teachers to do everything. Maybe one upside of this crisis will be that families will be more empowered and engaged in their kids education. This will be a benefit to everyone.
That deep sigh you did when you said you were getting questions and all of the answers were in an email you sent beforehand...I FELT EVERY PART OF THAT SIGH!!!!!!😒😒😒😒 And then you were trying to find the right words!!! Girl that is me EVERYDAY as a teacher! 😂😂
It is so wild to me that y'all have STARTED. Appreciate you and your mindset as we embark on this year together!

Right I just finished teaching summer school on the 17th! 🥴 I return the last week in Aug, and students return September 1
One more thing.. if you send out the email a couple days in advance.. you might want to send the email again the day before like you principal stated.. a busy single mom might not have time that very second.. like checking her email on her 15 minute break at work.. she then might say.. oh I will tell the child later since I am at work.. she then forgets to go back in and tell the child later after working 65 to 70 hours in a week to support her family... so that is awesome to send it out early.. but maybe resend the same email again and just state I see we only have 15 people signed in appropriately to the website.. I am just sending this email again in case anyone has questions for tomorrow’s go live.. just a suggestion to help you and them.. and it probably is parents being lazy and procrastinating like you stated.. which I could see is very frustrating when you are trying to do your job and teach their child.. but there are other circumstances and being on KZread for those families in your classroom could be like me.. with 2 jobs.. and sometimes I have 3 jobs.. 1 full time and 2 part time..
GIRL, you are a rockstar!!! I go back to work tomorrow and this gives me hope! Thank you for the ideas and encouragement!
You’re doing an incredible job! Thank you for providing tips and advice to the community.
YES!! Preach it sista! Thank you for keeping it real!!
Thanks so much for sharing your first day! It seems like it went great! You were well prepared! We dont start school until September, but it's so great to see all of these videos ahead of time for ideas and strategies for online teaching. We will be using Schoology, so I am going to do my best to learn it prior to school!! Big hugs !!
Again congratulations on your first week of school. Loved your suggestion about encouraging families to practice logging in.
Good morning, I just love this video. I’m currently doing virtual summer school and everything you just said is so true. Have those Windows open and send your class code out early. This is my last week of summer school and I’m glad I had the opportunity to experience virtual teaching since we will be starting the school year virtually.
We used the grid view extension that a lot of people have mentioned it’s great to see all but we did at times as internet issues in some areas where there probably was a high traffic flow. There is also another extension (I can’t remember the name at present) it might be in the attendance part that you were talking about but students can press various pictures that have thumbs up, raise hand to speak etc. we used this in the staff meeting and it made it a lot more productive. I didn’t used it with my Preschool students as taking muring and unmuting was a process in itself. Wishing al the best and hopefully you get to start teaching face to face soon. I am from Australia and we went back in wk 4 of term 2. We have just started our 2nd week of Term 3. All the best, remember to takes breaks as it can be so overwhelming teaching online.
I just found your channel and I’m so glad! I’m going to be student teaching in the spring!
Thank you! Great info for those teachers that will be next.
Thank you for sharing this process! The amount of emails is ridiculous! I was answering emails all day long last school year! I teach 2nd grade, so the students were very reliant on their parents. We did not have a google classroom set up, so we used classdojo for posting and submitting work since we already had that established. I will be starting Aug. 19th at a new school too (online learning). Good luck this year!
Thank you for the first day ideas!!
This video is excellent! Thank you!❤️ Please keeping doing videos!
I didn't realize you had students standup to share with the class. I did a study abroad in undergrad (Trinidad and Tobago) and several of the schools we visited had the students stand up to greet the adults as well as answer questions. I love nearpod too!
Do you have a welcome back letter to parents about distant learning? If so can you share?
Thank you for this video. I start Virtual Academy for 3rd grade on Aug. 10th and you have given me lots of great ideas! Glad your first day went well 😁.
I love love the glasses!!! I hate wearing contacts too! It dries my eyes out!
Hi! Non-teacher parent here. This is so fun to watch from the teacher's point of view and very helpful! Just an idea in case it helps...could you have a short & sweet email pre-prepped that you send like 30 minutes before class starts that pre-empts these kinds of questions? For example just a short email that has JUST the code/basic info they need? As a mama helping an older student but also have toddlers running around, sometimes I read something and try to be prepared with all good intentions but then if we get to the day and I read it 4 days ago, it's like "wait where's that email again? I can't find it! What do I need? Crap did I delete it on accident?" Etc. So maybe just-in-time emails (that you can prep during your planning time but just wait to press send so that they pop up in parents' inbox right when they need it) would save you some headache :)
Teachers and staff report back tomorrow. The start date for students has been pushed back to the 17th. We have the option to teach remotely from home or our classroom. What percentage of teachers at your school are teaching from their classroom?
Idk if you’ve figured it out since I know this is prefilmed, but there’s a google extension called grid that allows you to see all students in one screen 😉
Hi, and thank you for sharing your first day. Is that Google Meets table/cart that you use a personal one or was it provided by your district? If it's your own, would you please share where you got it? Thanks.
I start my freshmen year of college majoring in Elementary Education on August 17th. My little sister starts kindergarten August 26th, she will be going to school but our district also gave her 2 virtual options.
Yes! Please look ahead parents!
What did you put in your google meet set up space at that front of your room? What are your must haves for teaching DL from the classroom?
My kiddos go to an online public charter school (we did pre-Covid), they always start the day after Labor Day. Covid has not effected their schooling much other then all teacher meetings are online and no field trips. Also the library being closed is also rough.
Two questions. What eye shadow are you wearing? Could you give some sort of tutorial on setting up Google Meets with your classes? I've been trying with my kindergarten and first grade students with little success. I know there are multiple ways to do it, I'm just not sure which one is easier for parents and students.
My son (6yo) starts virtual school today. So I’m just going around looking at videos to get a feel for how it will be. I spent some tome last night getting prepared and saved the google classroom info on the task bar so it’s easy to get to. I’m nervous and I’m not the one going to school lol. Thanks for the video. Hope everything worked out!
I start on August 23rd. I'm from Algeria🇩🇿. Kids start on October 4th
This doesn’t seem so bad, i worry so much about participation. I teach 2nd and last year i only had about 13/56 students interact bc of internet issues.
Wow I go to school on September 7th
So glad your day was so successful
When I ordered my glasses from them I got it in a week!
I set everything up the first day and read the email twice. 😊 I like to be prepared.
Omg girl I so feel your pain with the email/parent topic.
As a student in Las Vegas ccsd (Clark county school district) it was hard. Most of my teachers did not do as much as others. And I have a question. Is your school in Apache junction? My cousin is a kindergarten teacher at an Apache junction school. Your classroom looks similar to hers.
the glasses look good.. how strong is your prescription? Looks like you are farsighted if you have trouble reading up close without them. I take it you have worn glasses for awhile?
It’s a good thing that you arrive to school early, check and respond to email.
hei, you are so fantastic with your strong glasses on, adorable! how strong are your glasses? :)
Do teachers have to wear their teacher badge thing thats a necklace do they have to wear that while teaching?
Thank you! I'm just a parent trying to take a sneak peek of what it may look like. TFS. ***Parents let's do our part and not stress our teachers more than what they already are. Get prepared before class day. This is not easy for our kids and our educators.
You definitely gave me an idea of what to expect on the first day of being virtual but we have to do both as of right now in person and virtual! And I am moving to Kindergarten where they cannot even log onto a chromebook yet! It should be QUITE Interesting 🧐 for sure 😂🤣😆
do you have shareable of meet the slides you mention
Hi There is an Tiled add on in Google Meets that is similar to Zoom. Check it out it may be useful.
Add Gridview extension.
September 9 2020
Did you do a virtual open house for parents?
How long your Google meets were?
I know this is gonna sound crazy... I sent my classroom invite. Then I logged in as every student and accepted just to make sure every kiddo was definitely a member of my class.
Are you doing or planning on doing daily live online learning? If so, can you tell me what your online schedule typically looks like? 😊
Do all of your students have internet access? This has been a challenge for many of my students. Enjoying your videos!
I'm curious about why you have your students stand up when speaking to you or the class. Do you ever experience issues with anxious students refusing to do this? Do you think some students that have intellectual insights to add to class discussions choose to not share because of this? I am not trying to be judgmental of this, I'm just curious how this works for you in your classroom.
You shouldn’t make them stand up to speak... that would cause me to NEVER want to speak or ask a question.
Hi Charlotte could you do some singing videos! Please , you are a good singer
Theres rumors that we are going back to school on the 16th
Did you have kids who turned off their cameras? This is an issue that my colleagues are discussing: requiring kids to turn on their cameras.
I'm excited to begin this new school year but nervous with all the changes. Love your shirt! ❤ Here's where I bought a few of my teacher shirts for this sch year😊teespring.com/stores/teacher-life-7
I thought I would see you actually teach 😕 Good information, though 👍🏾
Great, more ads with no disclosure
Why do you have students stand up when they answer a question?
Watch school get shut down again 💀
