When we think of the darker stories of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, our minds often jump straight to Sonic Adventure 2. With the tragic murder of a young girl, sending a lost soul on a grief stricken journey of revenge. Not to mention the execution of a former government scientist for...really? No good reason! Gerald Robotnik made mistakes, but he also did a lot of good for all of humanity. Yet, he was still disposable.
But, I think we often forget that things were, actually quite dark BEFORE all of this. E102 Gamma's story is one of abuse, inner reflection, self-sacrifice and redemption. And I honestly don't think his story in the original Sonic Adventure gets enough credit for being the trail blazing narrative experiment it was! And that's what we're going to look at today! This video still falls under the "Why Sonic the Hedgehog's friends are important" banner. So I've also left the details of that series below!
"Is anybody else SICK of the "Sonic the Hedgehog's stupid friends" narrative? Well, if ever there was a character who should NEVER be put into this category, it's E102 Gamma! Games media and series detractors have been attempting to gaslight us for well over a decade now that Sonic's friends have done nothing but hold the series back. With some "journalists" even going as far as trying to say the Sonic Series itself was NEVER good! Well I'm here to confirm that is complete and total nonsense! And what better way to make my argument than a KZread series going into insane detail on why each and every supporting Sonic character is important to the series?!
Miles Tails Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, E123 Omega, Silver, Blaze the Cat, Dr Eggman, and the star of this video, E102 Gamma, were all important characters. Crucial to the series, and the deeper, Shonen style stories fans are desperate to see make a return!
Of course, there are many more than the ones I've just mentioned, and we will get to ALL of them in time! But for now, let's take a trip to Sonic Adventure, and analyze the very first truly dark story in a Sonic game."

I don’t commission anyone or anything like that. 2: Probably won’t be the next video but I do plan to cover Cream in the future. 3: you’d have to leave that with me to give it some proper thought. The series had given us hints as to how ruthless Dr. Robotnik actually was as early as Sonic CD - in his dystopian future, Robotnik cares nothing for his creations and leaves them to rot as he rules the world. That being said, I do find it interesting how the Adventure games give us two different sides to the man. In SA1, Robotnik is absolutely ruthless and determined but SA2 humanizes him somewhat. He's still hell-bent on world domination, but we get to see his dedication to his grandfather and the revelation of just how deep Prof. Gerald's misanthropic insanity went shook him to his core and made him have serious second thoughts about his actions. I would also argue that the darker themes really did begin in Sonic CD. That game showed the full extent of Robotnik's ruthless drive while hammering in just how destructive he was. He created a ruined future ruled entirely by him and his pollution and negligence were actively rendering Little Planet uninhabitable. Had Sonic not stepped in to save the day, all life on Little Planet would've died out.

I'm not sure if what happened to Gamma in the end was "suicide" since it was Beta attacking him in a last act of jealousy that ultimately did him in. I think he actually didn't know what to do about the flicky trapped inside him, he was considering the option at the same time afraid to die so perhaps he could have gone to Amy and her friends for help, sadly that choice was ultimately taken away.

I still believe that maybe, JUST maybe, That there was an alternate ending for gamma to survive. And if he did, he would be on sonics side. Even though I understand why he couldn’t survive, but it would of gave a bittersweet ending if he was kept alive, freeing the birdy, letting Amy find him, and be repaired, with a new power supply.

I think what also adds to what makes this story so fascinating is, as touched on earlier, there is no definitive answer to the question of is Gamma a A.I or the flicky instead him? Both answers are given tons of evidence to support either side and as a result we, the viewers, are invited to come to our own conclusions. Further leading to great character analyses like this one that goes for the AI option.

@@erikbihari3625 Yet Gamma reacts to the picture of the Flicky family and instead of just flying away never to be seen again like the rest of it's family, the Flicky inside Gamma is present for the cast reunion in the Super Sonic portion, accompanying Amy in particular. I personally prefer to think of the Flicky as a power source since in my opinion, it makes Gamma’s story that much more remarkable that a machine designed for killing could develop a sense of morals against his design and allow himself to be destroyed ultimately because he felt it was the right thing to do…again against his very design.

That said, and maybe *because* I missed out on such a major event, the one thing that has stuck with me from the game throughout my life is Gamma. Honestly, even if other people don't think it's the case, I always saw E-123 Omega as the living legacy of E-102 Gamma. In my perspective, Gamma and Omega are the same character but in different models. As soon as Gamma dies and Omega was born, Omega still have the consciousness of Gamma's past and Eggman's cruelty on his E series brothers. Giving the reason why Omega wants to terminate Eggman. Gamma didn't really die, his soul is still inside of Omega. That's how I see it. Great video btw guys! Great work!

I agree, I've always seen it as a tragic continuation. Here gamma has the resolve to save the flickies trapped in him and his "brothers" for the sake of doing good. In typical Eggman fashion, he twists that good natured mission into an unbridled killing machine in Omega. Now it seems Omega is driven by revenge or even rage at Eggman instead of this good natured mission of freeing those opressed by Eggman. It gives him and shadow a little symmetry in heroes, if you want to take the story a bit more seriously than sonic team did.

  • @WolforNuva

    @WolforNuva

I would disagree with you on that. Omega and Gamma have very different personalities and objectives; Omega doesn't turn because of any cruelty on Eggman's part, to themselves or to other robots, Omega turns because he thinks he's hot shit and his potential was wasted away guarding some random room away from the action (though knowing that was the real Shadow in there honestly makes that job a lot more important in hindsight), and stays with Dark afterwards because of the bonds that formed during the game. Omega is also much more aggressive than Gamma ever was, where Gamma went through their mission motivated by empathy to save the animals inside the robots and trying to help his kin, Omega absolutely revels in destroying any Eggman robot in front of him for the sake of just ripping them apart and proving he's the superior robot. Nah to me Omega is not Gamma, but rather Gamma's little brother; an aggressive but loveable little shit that just wants to be seen and acknowledged, and the only one left to continue the legacy for them both.

Can confirm: the Discord server is very nice and has possibly the best name for a Sonic server I have seen so far. It has been very good to see the appreciation for Gamma and his story not only be consistent, but seem to even grow over the years. I enjoyed Gamma's design and gameplay as a kid, but I never really appreciated his story until I was a teenager. I am apparently the outlier there; so many people I hear speak about Gamma's story talk about the emotional effect it had on them as a kid and how it was the first game to have such an effect on them. Videos like this really are proof that there is so much more to the Sonic series than people give it credit for. The stories, the characters, even the world that they inhabit have so much to enjoy and analyse. It's just too bad that a lot of people completely missed this, because they were too busy bashing the buttons and going "Urgh, stupid cut scenes! Yeah, blah blah blah, I don't care! Just let me play the game!" Or even worse, there were likely people who just played Sonic's campaign and just went "There! I completed the game! I'm not even gonna bother playing as Sonic's lame-o friends, they suck!" This wouldn't bother me so much if it weren't for the fact that it feels like Sega are trying to appease these kinds of people, particularly the people who say "Stories in a Sonic game don't matter!" It just isn't doing the series any favours.

A mistake was made in the video in that Gamma's 1st Orders were to go through the shooting gallery in Final Egg before having the fight against Beta. I'm hoping the Tikal Video acknowledges just how dark her backstory was having her father & his soldiers trample her & the chao she was friends with before the creature that seemed to be her best friend committed genocide against her race. What if there was a way to modify the E series robots so that they could be powered by a different power source instead of living creatures and that tales could help with that because who else could and then gamma could defeat his siblings so that they could be modified, and then he could be modifiedalso it begs the question of whether or not there is a tiny critter inside Omega

I recommend using the original japanese stories of the sonic games and not english ones i understand you maybe dont know japanese and that is why you dont use them but windii has translated lot of the japanese cutscenes. (unfortunately most of her videos were deleted but there are some repost i have made a playlist of most of the reposts.) but other than that good video. There are also a few retranslated mods you can use. And the voice acting is just way better.

Eh, don't get me wrong, Gamma is easily my favourite Sonic character... but I do like Orbot and Cubot a lot too. Ever since the SatAM vs AoStH days there's been room for a serious side and a comical side to the Sonic franchise, and Orbot and Cubot carry on that Scratch-and-Grounder legacy.

Gamma didn't commit suicide in any capacity, though he was surely considering it. His life came to an end shortly after taking a direct hit from Beta, who launched one last-ditch effort to kill the one he was envious of. I'm not really sure how you guys got this confused, or why you quickly glossed over the fight with Beta while ignoring that key moment of his final attack, but this was a great video otherwise that helped me not only revisit Gamma's story, but appreciate it all the more than I already did before.

Wait, Suicide? I thought Gamma succumbed to his injuries from the fatal blow he got from Beta

I think Beta wasn't trying to stop him, both of them just wanted to die.

Beta got the killing blow on him in the final game, but originally he was supposed to shoot himself in order to free the flicky powering him. Too dark for Sega’s flagship E-rated title.

I do wonder if Gamma could potentially have self-repaired from said fatal blow, the way he seems to after the fight with Sonic, say. But in the end he chose to free his flicky and complete his self-imposed "mission".
