The First Big Mistake of New Writers - And The One Many Forget to Fix!

The first big mistake of many new writers -- They lack the confidence needed to take in audience feedback without doubting their ability! The relationship between artist and audience is complex, but I believe that any good writer or creator considers their audience when making art. So how do we consider our audience without diluting our product? Let's dive in!

I don't think this video showed up anywhere, I subscribe to your channel and so I simply check for new videos when they are posted. I follow a manageable amount of channels and so am able to keep up with any new videos that are posted from my favorite creators, like Matt. This video was helpful for me personally, as I am writing, as a hobby. Thanks to Matt for putting out some content that I both enjoy and am able to take something away from. I am a big fan.

The video did show up in my sub box, but i used the notification bell to just open the video in a new tab. Great question, kinda hits close to home for myself.

Your videos show up in my subscriptions. I've missed hearing your thoughts. I enjoy the work you do and the cadence of your voice as I do my own creative work.

I saw this video first in my recommended feed, then I clicked to watch the video in my sub box (usually I'm searching for the videos I'd like to watch in my sub box, because that's just the most effective way to find every video from the channels I subscribed to I feel like)

I’m really glad you’re back to making videos. I know it doesn’t have anything to do with your channel but I really hope there’s some new Fungeons and Flagons coming! That was my favorite thing to see you participate in. I suppose I can reluctantly mention D&D on SF too. Not because I didn’t like it as much, but because you guys got railed by that company that I don’t even want to say the name of.

Thanks for the advice Matt. in the time between writing this email and this video being released something akin to inspiration struck. It's nothing more than idea right now, or perhaps it's better to say that it's an idea of an idea, but it's a start. And I think with your advice and all the videos I've watched on storytelling in the past several months that I'm really going to do this again, just maybe with baby steps

This is solid advice, and I can see how your thoughts on writing influenced the writing of Nuclear Family (perhaps vice versa as well). Regardless of what unfortunately happened there it was one of my favorite channels to watch and wasn't afraid to push people's buttons via satire and other devices... something you could often see reflected in the comments.

This is cool advice. I think All Entertainment is like building that Roller Coaster. You want to be able to dictate how a person wants to feel, but you don't want them to get one way where they get stuck and stop in the middle of your project. So it's like a journey of manipulative highs and lows to get them towards a conclusion or pay off for starting the ride. It sounds like half of her problem is figuring out how to get people to react the way she wants, tell the story that she wants, while at the same time, keeping people engaged. That is the difficult part of creating entertainment is balancing that tightrope of pleasing others while ensuring that your vision and ideas stay in tack. When you get an editor, they are going to suggest things and changes, some objectively better, some just to their taste, but it's your job to keep your vision (especially if you really believe in it), and you got to do all the rerouting to get there. However, I think that kind of "compromise" will keep you satisfied because you still are making your own idea first. It's just you have to remember, your vision is why you are making this thing. It also doubles as the pay off, so you probably want to put more thought and development into your ideas than you think. Your belief in the payoff will kind of sell you on staying true to your ideas, and make you want to fight more for them. It's just that the strategy is that you want to keep everyone on the ride. If you want to make a Sci Fi Horror book, but your audience keeps trying to tell you they want Realistic Drama, there is a point where you can say, "it is what it is", but personally more often than not there is some compromise in that maybe you write your characters a little more grounded in this Sci Fi Horror world, and add some human drama to your slasher side.

As an artist of a different breed, I find that I tend to be my most critical viewer, I think because I don't usually get super constructive criticism from some of my peers. Is this true of anyone else? I'm curious.
