The secret to barn cats is feed them in the morning. Not at night. Then they're more likely to hunt if food isn't in a dish all day and night.

I find that my cats hunt on instinct. A full belly makes no difference to my cats. Mice, roaches, Snakes and on occasion a bird. I had one that would tackle Squirrels! I hope that you kept your kittens up for at least a week or two. It is easy for them to get lost if not. Good luck and GOD bless

When I worked at a Boarding and Breeding Ranch, we had lots of heavily feed cats, but few mousers. When they, considered ferals, were fed as per ASPC requirements, one feeding per day and water at all times. Now I have a small hobby farm and one cat. She was/is a feral. Small, but tuff. She liked to hunt in the coop. I set traps (TomCat reuseabule, they look like big clothes pins) baited with peanut butter. So I fed them to the chickens. They out hunt the cat. Once the chickens figured out it was food and some pointers from the cat. Haven't had a mouse problem. Tho I do have to bribe the cat to get back snakes.

Aw, so much thought put into that cozy cat den! (Edit: in case I wasn't clear, since people here seem to think I was being sarcastic, I'm saying that I love the thought you put into it and its beautiful) A few things though, the bells on he collars are dangerous for outdoor cats, you have predators around, and they can pinpoint the bell sounds and I've heard of cats that sadly got mauled to death by a dog because of the bells giving them away. They will also warn the rodents to run away. The collars themselves, btw, can also be dangerous, but as long as you make sure they are cat-safe collars, with a safetly break-under-pressure buckle, it should be fine. you WILL lose many collars but the cats wont hang themselves to death on fences and bushes.

  • @thechickincharge1073

Yes, they are called ‘breakaway’ collars! They can’t get stuck in tight places and choke to death with the breakaway kind and bells are bad business!! I went from a dog last December (she died😭) to finding a stray kitty to now a cat mama of four!😱 I have learned SO much. I wish I lived out of the city limits so my cats could go in and out of a cat door!!!

Oh my gosh! THANK YOU for saying you are getting them fixed! I grew up on a big farm and all the farmers never got them fixed, and of course they ended up with way to many cats and always ended up culling them every few years. Don’t worry about the boys being lazy after getting fixed, it’s simply NOT TRUE.. my 2 year old little boy kitty is fixed and he is a total beast with hunting. Females, in my experience are just more calm over all, fixed or not. Anyways, thanks for getting them fixed and enjoy the new kitties.

@@BLAQFiniks I don’t understand why a simple comment using an extremely common phrase has upset you so much. Getting them fixed, (yes I’m using that term again because it’s a common term and I feel absolutely so shame in using it as a blanket term in place of spaying or neutering), getting cats fixed isn’t debilitating to them at all. It actually saves lives. If you grew up on a farm, you would know that cats breed like crazy, and the solution to that for many farmers is to cull the animals to cure overpopulation. My personal experience seeing this was a farmer that lived down the road culled 50 cats one year, and that is not uncommon. If you live in a big city, around almost every apartment complex there are tons and tons of homeless cats because when people move they get abandoned because they aren’t cute little kittens anymore. They breed and breed. The manager usually ignores it until it’s out of hand, and then they call in team to trap generations of homeless cats and cull them. My personal experience with that is, I lived an a apartment complex in a big city and the owners ignored the cat population for about 5 years, it got out of hand, until one year when they trapped and culled almost 300 cats. Not fixing them is a major issue, and the solution is usually way more “debilitating” than getting them fixed. Playing semantics with the use of a word while calling the procedure debilitating ridiculous. Getting cats “fixed” , fixes a very important problem, and saves animal lives.

I put her in my jacket and brought her inside. She stayed until she thawed and with plenty of pets, scratches and cuddles she’s now a member of the family. Her name is Basil (pronounced Bazil). Some cats just are not hunters. Had a big black cat that was a stray I found as a kitten. He always was a little wild and didn’t like to be petted much, but he got to go in and out of the house. We’re right next to a farm and that meant there was mice to be found, and my cat did try and catch them but just never could catch any. The most he ever managed to get was a feather from a crow. Him and that crow I swear where arch enemies, so he was pretty proud of himself for getting a tail feather (crow was fine). He was just meant to be a house cat that played at being a barn cat sometimes, and we loved him anyway.

Great wee cat house. We always had cats growing up on a croft, they would disappear into the hills for days if not a week at a time and come back fat and happy with a belly full of bunnies.

You are so talented & your work is always beautiful!! You never just throw anything together the aesthetics are always pleasing!! --Honestly blows my mind no task ever seems to be too difficult for you!! The chicken coup you built is the most impressive yet . When I first saw it & that was around the time I first started following I seriously thought you purchased it & was BLOWN AWAY & when I found out you had ACTUALLY BUILT IT ON YOUR OWN!!! WOWW!

I’m not sure how far out you guys are but this family farm in O’Fallon Missouri opens their farm to the public for a small fee per person! They let people just roam and pet all of their goats and other animals while they have someone home. Apparently they make good money!

My dad hung 2X6s on metal L brackets up high in his barn along with short 'platforms' so the cats can get up there. He even threw som cat beds up there. His barn cats stay in the barn always on overwatch on the horses.

@@jessicamcwilliams3346 I looked up what barn owls eat. If the are getting enough small rodents, 3 or more mice a day, they won't mess with birds. Captive barn owls are sometimes fed dead day old chick's and cut up pidgin. The birds should be fine since most will be bigger and not outside at night.

@@tessalynne6778 owls will eat whatever they can get a hold off they aren't pets. I should been more specific they will kittens and chicks. Birds of prey really don't make good pets because you can't control the well or train them unless have the skills, like falconry. Those birds have been in that hobby for centuries. Barn owls are wild birds.
