I just wanna point something out for y'all: In "The Headband", we learn that the Fire Nation doesn't dance. They don't believe in dancing. They don't even know what it MEANS to dance. But in this episode, we see that a dance is literally the most sacred, most ancient form of firebending. Dancing is integral to the Sun Warrior culture- the original culture of the element of fire. We see just how much the Fire Nation has perverted the element of fire- they no longer dance. They've forgotten their roots.

It's because as the fire nation became more imperialistic they started to view their flames as a weapon to be used with precision and excessive force (the reason why azula is so good at it) whereas that doesn't accurately represent the nature of fire. It's energetic and free, it's unpredictable and lively due to constant movement similar to a dance (hence the emphasis on dancing) Which I think was a perfect way to parallel the 2 firebending styles and zuko was the perfect character to express them through due to his idealistic nature and his prior inferiority to azula because it meant that learning this new style was able to put him on a level playing field with her for their agni kai

The Sun Warriors are based mostly on Southeast Asian cultures like Thailand and Indonesia. Look up Candi Sukuh, Angkor Wat, and Phanom Rung. There’s probably little need to take inspiration for step pyramids from around the globe when it already exists in that area of the world. The closest thing that really ties them to Mesoamericans is their worshipping the sun and their celestial calendar, but a lot of cultures have worshipped the sun over the millennia.

My theory to why Sozin started the tradition of Dragon slaying, was to prevent other fire benders and future Avatars from learning the true ways of Firebending to leave him unchallenged. From what we saw in the *“Avatar and the firelord”* Sozin was an extremely skilled firebender who incorporated different elemental philosophies into his bending style like waterbending, which was shown in his heat-redirection and play-fighting with Roku.

Also!!! In the episode “the headband”, we found out that people in the fire nation don’t dance. In this episode, one of the original forms of fire bending is connected to dancing, and dancing is a part of life and celebration around the world. All of this comes together to show that the fire nation probably had a rich culture, in which fire was based on life, on the sun, but through centuries of indoctrination firebenders were taught that rage, etc fuel firebending, and they either forgot how to dance or were forbidden to dance, creating a gap between the people and the original source of firebending and ultimately making them reliant on their rage.

This is Zuko's second time flying on Appa. The first time was in "The Siege of the North, Part 2", although he was unconscious during that time. Sokka mocks Zuko by suggesting he should jump into a volcano. In the following episode, Sokka and Zuko both literally find themselves in a hot spot Aang calls Zuko "Sifu (Master) Hotman", a reference to his knowledge of what was common slang in the Fire Nation a hundred years prior. From this episode on, Zuko does not grunt in anger every time he firebends, which was something he did frequently in seasons one and two and part of season three.

Like this shit impacted me on a mental level, how u should always have something to drive u. Anger and hatred as a drive causes pain and destruction. But a positive drive creates life and beauty. This was honestly one thing that helped me change for the betterment of myself and my family/friends. It was actually so impacting. Azula is a sociopath (cold, calculating pathological liar, highly intelligent, lacking interpersonal skills group dynamics of a leader) compared to Sokka and Suki for instance. When Iroh describes creating lightning and having inner peace to do so it blows up for Zuko and is perfect for Azuka because she truly finds no conflict within herself....for now lol Lack of empathy - Azula has absolutely zero empathy. Cold, calculating nature - Azula is cold, she is incredibly intelligent for her age and she calculates her every move. One step ahead of everyone (until her mental breakdown). Shallow emotions - Azula exhibits a very minimal set of emotions. The only time we see her exhibit an emotion such as crying was during her mental breakdown, when she completely lost it and cried out of anger and frustration. Narcissism - Azula is extremely narcissistic. Grandiose self image -Azula sees herself as superior to everyone (she’s also a prodigy). Charming - This trait is one which Azula does not possess. She uses fear to control people. High IQ - Azula is VERY intellegent. Manipulative - Azula is extremely manipulative and it is shown throughout the show, from manipulating Zuko, her friends, etc. Low tolerance for boredom - Great example for this would be Azula’s idea to burn the beach house of the general’s son in season 3, episode 5. Compulsive lying - Azula is a pathological liar

imo each of the gaang adds an element of what they were lacking based on their elemental attribute. Aang is an airbender who brings freedom and levity to katara and sokka's life, while they both help him adapt to a changing time/world and be flexible as waterbenders. Toph influenced the group as an earthbender by building on their North Pole victory, they went from travelling skirmishes/survival to seeking a foundation to oppose the fire nation via the library/earth king, and all being more headstrong. in this set of episodes, zuko as a firebender brings the group what they needed after two defeats (ba sing se+invasion) - drive, motivation, and energy. The next few episodes all go at a breakneck pace and thats in large part due to Zuko being the *spark* for the group to finally act on their deepest fears/motivations (aang learning fire, sokka's redemption/rescue mission, katara's revenge, mei+ty lee's decision, and finally fighting the fire lord)

This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. Iroh stated to Zuko in "Bitter Work" that firebending is fueled by rage and emotion, despite having known the true motivation behind the bending art. When Zuko is about to raise the golden artifact, Aang states that he is "very suspicious of giant glowing gems sitting on pedestals", most likely alluding to a similar situation concerning the booby-trapped golden idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ran and Shaw resemble the red and blue dragons from Zuko's fever-induced dream in Ba Sing Se. The Sun Warrior's architecture resembles that of Indian Buddhist Stupas and Tibetan monasteries. The bowing gesture demonstrated by the Sun Warriors during Ran and Shaw's judgement is identical to the bowing gesture demonstrated by Kwan's students in "The Headband".

The final move of the Dancing Dragon is reminiscent of the "Fusion" move in Dragon Ball Z. The entire Dancing Dragon form bears a striking resemblance to the real life Long Ying Mo Kui, the traditional Southern Dragon kung-fu style. Eternal flames are common to many ancient religions. In particular, the Hebrew Bible commands that the altar flame must never go out. The sun warriors also seem to have a shofar, a musical horn made from ram's horn that is used to announce religious ceremonies. This is the only episode of the franchise to first air on a Tuesday.

Hana People say the Zuko life-changing field trips didn’t need to happen (except sokka) but i strongly disagree. Just in this episode we learn about: - How Toph learned to see - How Zuko’s firebending would fuel, if not coming from rage - The original benders - That Iroh learned from the dragons - What happened to the dragons - The dragon egg - What firebending truly is - Why Zuko’s firebending was kinda weak before and why it gets so much better after this (This is a little more hidden but in “The Headband” we learn that fire nation have banned dancing so that means they never taught The Dancing Dragon.) And probably a lot more i missed out on! Amazing episode!

You know, when Zuko had the mental breakdown in Ba Sing Se, the evil voice in his head was Azula as a blue dragon, and the good voice was Iroh as the red dragon. Then we learn that avatar Roku, who was Zuko great grandfather, spirit animal was a red gradon while his other great grandfather Sozin was a blue dragon. Then finally here, we see that the dragon who dancing with him is a red dragon, symbolizing that he IS good. Also, when they facing the dragons at rhe end. Zuko is facing the blue dragon, symbolizing he is facing his fear, and Aang facing the red dragon, symbolizing that he is also facing his fear of fire, when he burned Katara. The details in this anime is amazing.

This episode shows Toph learning earthbending from badgermoles. She had previously stated she learned the art from them in "Sokka's Master". Katara continues to be cold toward Zuko after he was finally accepted to the group in the previous episode. She remarks at the irony of him losing his firebending. The song chanted by the Sun Warriors to call forth the Masters is the same as the Avatar series ending credits song. The close-up of Aang shown as his first burst of fire is disappearing mirrors the close-up from "The Deserter" when he makes a ring of fire that results in Katara's being burned. That episode taught him the dark side of firebending and caused him to steer away from ever using it again; this one teaches him the true art, thus breaking that mental block.
