"The Finest Hours" tells story of greatest small-boat rescue in history

Last October, we brought you the astonishing story of Bernie Webber, who six decades ago, led a crew of four Coast Guardsmen on a water rescue off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They saved 32 mariners from death in a horrendous storm. That tale of heroism hit the big screen this weekend. Mark Albert reports.

If you ever spend time at Cape Hatteras National Shore in North Carolina, you will find the place a treasure trove of the early history of the US Lifesaving Service, which ultimately became the US Coast Guard. That's where I first heard the motto "You have to go out, and that's a fact, but nothing says you have to come back." The rescues those men performed were legendary, and the Coasties continue that work today.

Twenty three years after this, another Bernie would do something very similar to Webber, only on Lake Superior with Bernie Cooper turning the Arthur M. Anderson around to look for Edmund Fitzgerald survivors in another brutal storm.

The main reason why the 36500 had those engine problems was that the 36500 (and the other 3600 series motor lifeboats) were powered by a Sterling Petrel inline-6 gasoline engine. Because it is carbureted, it had a tendency to stall in very rough seas.

Surely there would have been more than ONE Compass on a Coastguard Lifeboat! Even if the Boat didn’t have a Secondary Fixed Compass at least one of them would have a pocket Compass?
