When Aang went into the Avatar State and became that sea monster, that was a combination of both the Avatar's wrath and the Ocean Spirit seeking revenge for it's lost partner unleashed upon the Fire Nation invaders. It's so badass.

It’s also both a demonstration of what Aang is truly capable of, and one reason why you should always (at least) heed/attempt-to-understand/think-about one’s warnings no matter how ridiculous they sound, especially if you know that they know what their saying, because not doing so may/can cost you.

Another thing to note is that all moves while in this state are pushing motions, he doesn't use any pulling motions until the moon spirit is restored.

I think the reason i wasn't scared of the face stealer when i was a kid, it's because i was way too dumb to realize how scary it was

I rewatch Yaboyroshis reactions on avatar almost every year and that line is so iconic lol love those guys

"Why does Katara not feel it?" Only Aang and Yue felt it. Everyone else lost their bending but were otherwise fine. Aang and Yue felt faint and pain because Yue had a direct connection to the Moon Spirit and Aang is the bridge between the humans and spirits as the Avatar.

Note how when Aang was in giant fish mode and he was acting as a medium for the Ocean Spirit, he only ever pushed the water to attack because the Moon Spirit was pull

It really shows Irohs reverence for the spirits when he's willing to resort to violence to protect them, even though he's been incredibly passive and zen leading up to this episode. Little, good tidbits of writing

It still amuses me that Aang's prediction came true. The spirits unleashed an attack on the fire nation with their spirit powers. Just goes to show that anything is possible. Also Iroh showing his wrath for the first time. THIS MAN IS A LEGEND!!!!

Zhao being most unwise basically unleashed all three on the Fire Nation forces AT ONCE. ....Wouldn't be surprised if this was an intentional reference.

I absolutely love how Iroh's last lines in this season are the exact words he says to Zuko in the very first episode. Zuko didn't listen back then, but here he finally does. "A man needs his rest."

A nice little touch during the black-and-white part, there is actually 1 other thing in the scene that's coloured besides the blue from the Ocean Spirit: Yue's eyes are still blue.

I love the idea that the Ocean was just filled with anguish, Aang even being there allowed it to supersede what mortal limitations it had and together it just exhibited pure oceanic rage. Continues to make sense that it regresses when it sees the moon has returned, and even still drags its friend's killer to his doom. God the writing in this show is so good!

The truly terrifying thing about Ko that I didn't get as a kid is that it is TRYING to get an emotion out of its victims. It won't just take your face by accident. It enjoys its role.

Loving the crowd here, no spoilers and all excitement and grief counselling for our host. Book one is done, onto Book 2 and watching the rise of Zuko's sister! Among other things.

If Season 1 made you cry this much, and I don't know how you're going to survive Seasons 2 & 3. X)

Yo Koh's design is so simple but so effective, being a giant centipede with his front having extra feelers looking like eyelashes and his entire face being one blinking eye that swaps out it's stolen faces each time it blinks is so cool, and some added lore connecting it to one of Aang's previous lives is great

the moment when the dad says "so proud... and sad" always gets me, the show doesnt try to hide the raw emotion of the situation, to me thats a moment for kids to watch and understand its ok to just be sad sometimes

I love how many details you can get from looking even a little bit deeper into the show, and just how much care and effort goes into each little bit. For example, if you pay attention to the type of Waterbending that La uses when merged with Aang, you may notice something interesting. Tui and La (the Moon and the Ocean) represent Push and Pull respectively, an eternal dance of Yin and Yang to balance each other. But when Tui is no longer there, La ONLY uses Push motions in their Waterbending. Whether as blasts of water, large waves, even physically slicing, it’s ONLY push. Because they lost the other half of them that balances them out. However, once Tui is revived, not only does La calm down, but it performs its first real ‘pull’ motion now that its other half has returned. And its dragging Zhao into the depths below.

Tuī and Lā do indeed mean push and pull respectively in mandarin. and when Aang merged with the fish, all of his attacks were "push" related, because the "pull" fish was dead.

Man it really just... says so much to zukos core values and character that even after everything, he STILL tried to save him from being taken by the ocean. And no matter how many times i rewatch this series, the same parts always make me cry.

Even though we do not like him, some part of me can also understand why Zhao would not want to accept mercy from Zuko. Even ignoring the element of pride, at that point, it was pretty much game over for this invasion. Failing on that massive a scale in his first real war as an admiral? I don't think Zhao would have wanted to go back to the homeland. Getting demoted would have been the least of his worries for a colossal failure like that.

For real. And this is arguably the weakest of the three finales. This was a great pair of episodes, but the others are just that good.

Show - the spirits are Always circling, push and pull You - *sudden realization* Me - hey, shes got it! You - IS IT KATARA AND SOKKA? me - ok nevermind.

19:37 Zhao just pissed off the spirit of the ocean to enough of a degree that it remanifested, whilst being an admiral of a naval based nation. And he somehow was still expecting to come out on top in this situation. If I had to guess, he damn near got the fire nation destroyed.

Remember back in ep.7 when aang was riding Avatar Roku's dragon in spirit form? And Iroh was the only one who saw them? 7:00 In here Zhao talks about how Iroh went on a mysterios trip to the spirit world. Hense why Iroh has some connection 2 the spirits & why he saw aang and the dragon in their spirit form!!!!!!

Yea, people who haven't seen this show. Cannot understand or comprehend the majesty of this show. It goes way beyond anything that I knew about anything. Calling it a kids show is a major injustice. It's really, hard to put into words what this show is. It's just absolutely amazing.

what is cool about that fight when aang was in avatar state with ocean spirit is that since spirit of moon (pull) was dead, aang could only push waterbending, he never pulled water, he only pushed it, thats such a cool detail!

You can see her next to Iroh during Zuko's agni kai... She's smiling

Fun fact since the moon was dead when the Sea spirit and aang the only water bending that could be done was Push since the moon was pull and no moon, so in a way that was only aang at half power of only one element imagine the power of all 4 at one time with all that

You’ll see that Zuko’s sister is a much more formidable foe than Zhao ever was.

The giant fish monster that manifests when Aang combines with the Ocean Spirit La is affectionately known as "Koizilla". :) Binged your stuff in 2 days, now I'm caught up for Book 2. Buckle up, buttercup. Can. Not. Wait. More amazing guest VAs. More amazing mature themes. More amazing fight sequences. More. MORE! ***MORE!***

I'm one of those kids you mentioned that grew up with this show, and i can say with confidence that this is one of the few shows that genuinely loves it's audience. And I mean love in the sense of caring for and supporting the spiritual development of another. This show helped so many people.

"Zhao, whatever you do to that spirit, I will unleash upon you ten times over!" So, we've only ever seen Uncle Iroh fight a few times in this show but each time it is through martial prowess. He had managed to block and throw Zhao's body back from just holding his foot in the Agni Ki back in episode 3. When he fought the Earth Benders with Zuko, he used a chain to block rocks thrown at him as well as redirect a boulder back at an Earth Bender. Despite his lack of defined musculature, he is still hella fit! The only times when we have seen him fire bend was through practical uses like heating the hot spring, his chains, and maybe throwing some fire blasts to cover his escape. We haven't seen him throw hands like Zhao, Zuko, or Jeong Jeong, who are top and highly skilled fire benders. So, when he yells, "I will unleash upon you ten times over" then you know that this whole time Iroh has been holding back. He is a far more powerful and skilled Fire Bender than anyone else here. Also, "My girlfriend turned into the moon." 23:47 I tend to think it was less of his pride and more of his accepting of his fate after what he had done to the spirits.

Imagine they'd let Zuko die in the snow. I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to explain it to Uncle Iroh. 😬🤯

That would be pretty stupid of him. Iroh wouldn’t expect young kids to actually help a guy who’s been hunting them all over the world. It wouldn’t make sense.

When Koh started talking about the spirits, I love how Alicia said the most random ass guess, "Is it Katara and Sokka?" 😆. Normally I hate it when people try to guess things without letting things play out first but this is entertainment, looking forward for more in Book 2 😃

Koh is still one of my favourite antagonistic characters from the show, I always loved rewatching this episode as a child whenever it came on tv, his creepiness, devoid of true malice, was what always intrigued me

It's funny that Aang said in the previous episode something about "Giant spirit monster"

i guess teh spirits really did "unleash a crazy and amazing spirit attack on the Fire nation" huh 🤣

One neat detail of Koi-zilla is that it only pushes the water and does not pull. This detail tells us that the spirit that was killed had the pull aspect

This finale is one of the most powerful, impactful finales or any cartoon and even of all time. It's still fantastic and emotional no matter how many times i see it. The shots, lighting, music, writing, emotions and a tragedy from which emerged a bittersweet beauty. What more could we want. It had romance, action and drama and everything. -

Congratulations on completing Book One! It only gets better from here. Book One was all about setting up the characters, establishing the plot, and building the world. Now, that the heavy lifting has been done, Book Two can build on top of that. We get some of the best episodes of the franchise in Book Two. I won't spoil, but if the tears flowed in this Season, they will be a waterfall next Season. Also, you know things are serious when Uncle Iroh yells.

btw fun little note. When Aang and Ocean spirit combined they only used pushing water moves cuz moon spirit represented the pulling and was dead at the time.

There’s a fun theory that since Aang was frozen, the cycle of “who’d be born Avatar” got wonky. The idea goes Yuei was supposed to be born with the Avatar spirit, but since Aang hadn’t died she wasn’t.

The thing with koh thats great is thay eveyrthing he says is something to get an emotion out of u whether its anger, sadness, happiness, etc and with how quickly he went to aang when he showed excitement in the realisation shows that from the very start hes ready to attack but aang was quick enough to regain his composure

I just noticed this episode was directed by Dave Filoni, as in the guy behind the Star Wars Clone Wars tv show and various other star wars projects. Also I absolutely love Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker and the Joker from the 90's batman cartoon) voicing Fire Lord Ozai

I personally think it is very beautiful to believe that the reason the ocean spirit stopped on its way back just to grab Zhao is simply bc it was like 'and fuck you in particular for trying to kill my buddy'

This finale hits so hard and is a gem amongst a show of excellence

More attention to detail here is that when Aang goes full Kaiju with the help of the ocean spirit he only ever PUSHES the water since the moon is responsible for the PULL

Fan Theory: Yue was ment to be the Avatar after Aang, but as He was still alive the Avatar Spirit was unable to reincarnate and this is why she was born without a soul.

For me when I was a kid. I just hide from that monster, just heard the show

It's only just dawning on me, but Iroh's physicality and body type seems to be based on the great martial artist Sammo Hung

Did ya notice the subtle colors when it went black n white? Yue's eyes were still blue, and the firebenders flames gave them a flash of color before going out. I wasn't as afraid of Ko but more creeped out. Now Ko's mama... Well that's another story for a different time no spoilers

I remember when this show was aired for hte first time, seeing aang do all that was truly something else, it was an amazing experience

I'm gutted I didn't see this as a kid. I was 23 when it came out though and didn't actually watch it until I was 30 because I kept seeing it in memes and wanted to know what the fuss was about. Great decision on my part honestly

I cant wait to see you watch Book 2, it only gets better and better and im so exited to see what you think of all the new characters that will get introduced ahh its like reliving Avatar again through your eyes~ Its great

A part of me really does feel like that big sea-monster(heh) scene isn't Aang popping off; that's him doing his job. He's a bridge between the spirit world and the mortal world. And in this scene it's not him fighting at all, its him loaning the 'avatar' in its entirity to the ocean spirit. This isn't Aang popping off, this is the ocean spirit absolutely pissed.

Season 1 was only the beginning, its gonna become SO MUCH BETTER THAN IT ALREADY IS

This is not actually Azula’s first appearance. We first see her standing next to Iroh at Zuko’s agni kai against Ozai. Also standing next to Iroh is Zhao. So there is a fan theory that Zhao is actually Iroh and Ozai’s half-brother and Azulon’s bastard son. Because why would Zhao be sitting in what looks like a royal box. It would also make sense why Zhao was promoted twice in three years because remember when we first see Zhao, Iroh thinks he is still a captain, not a commander. But in the fire nation that would actually be okay because in the Kyoshi novels we learn that in fire nation nobility it is okay to have children out of wedlock as long as it’s before the marriage (that’s at least how I read it). IDK if it still considered okay in Aang’s time but it is in Kyoshi’s time.

That last moment is super cool because technically that's not Aang's power as the avatar, that was the power of the ocean spirit, it literally "Possessed" Aang and used both their strengths to manifest that body, the spirit just wanted its partner back, that's why when he saw the moon Aang stopped but the monster didn't disappear when its separated from Aang and why it specifically went for Zhiao at that last part because the spirit was genuinely angry and wanted revenge. Also don't worry Zhiao was beyond dead, like whatever afterlife is in the avatar universe, hell or heaven or whatever, Zhiao will have none of that because the spirit probably made sure he's just erased from existence. But Zhiao being himself, his mistakes will continue to haunt the squad although not much

If it makes you feel better, Zhang in the afterlife is reduced to a rambling madman that not a single character recognizes. The man was technically successful in slaying the moon itself but he became the opposite of that great legend he was hoping for.

You're really gonna like book 2

After all so long still love the progression of this animation

aaah excited to see you get into season two and meet a bunch of new people!!!! the finale of this season definitely leaves a huge impact on the characters, especially Aang, who's really going to mature so beautifully. you're gonna love it. there's this one episode in book 2, called 'tales of ba sing se' which is very much a fan favourite.

Iroh is the prime example of the being a 'warrior in a garden'. Such a powerful man, but only uses violence as a last resort.

No one i know who has actually sat down to watch this show with me, has avoided crying, watching this episode.

I don't know if you had noticed before, but you've actually seen Zuko's sister prior to this episode ;) back in episode 12 "The Storm," when Iroh is describing how Zuko got his scar, you can see in the memory his sister was watching him get burned from the crowd with an expression of pure glee on her face.

10:28 I can't exactly tell with the filter in the way, but that face looks like the Blue Spirit. Just like Zuko's mask when he infiltrated Zhao's base to free Aang.

Reminds me of the story of The Bamboo Cutter's Wife.

It is often the so called "kids' shows" that truly push the medium forward, that tell the strongest stories. While adult animation here in the west struggles to be anything other than a crass comedy. And among all semi-serious ages action, a genre which is grossly underappreciated, especially by executives, this is one of the all time best.

'Anything else but this-' The Monkeys are an endangered species, now.

Quick no spoiler tidbit: Remember earlier when Zuko was being burned by his father and Iroh couldn't watch? Watch it again to see who's smiling next to him.

now imagine koh the face stealer-- but george takei. because he’s playing him in the live action. honestly, not ready for that.

Hah, it's funny. The Yang I've seen the most of is actually a fire associated character herself. Yang Xiao Long. Uses 12 gauge shotgun bracers with explosive rounds. Zuko forgot to plan this part. The part he doesn't mention, that's his YOUNGER sister his dad loves more. F_ boi would have been hard pressed to telegraph that attack more. 5 imaginary bucks says he landed headfirst. Kho didn't keep me up, but like some other commenters, I don't think I fully processed the terror. Also very few things keep me up. The white Martians from the comics and the Alien Isolation xenomorph from Markiplier's let's play though? Those stand out. Also mummies. Not nuclear war trivia or the possibility of hypernovas though. Aang is going to be the best at poker. There are good reasons why this is a beloved show remembered fondly and passionately all these years later. Why it was the first show to beat Spongebob out on Nickelodeon's awards before being kicked out of the running for the remainder of its airtime. Why people still despise the first attempt at live action, and why Korra faced an entire mountain uphill by continuing the world. You had some interesting ideas on the spirits' "mortal" forms. Sokka knows Zuko would probably die. He's not the gentle one. Momo, the shutter upper of stupid speeches. Iroh is a man of wisdom and experience. And Zhao is meddling with primordial forces. Zhao the reckless. Zhao the coward. Zhao the fool. So what Aang said about a spirit power attack? Behold. Zhao killed the moon. Now the fire Nation shall know the wrath of the ocean. The unbalanced rage driving them pack. The Avatar has in this moment become an instrument of primordial vengeance. The fate of the world was on the line. The very cosmos was unbalanced. To fix such things requires courage.... and a sacrifice. The insides of those ships thrown back will look like meaty marinara jars. The ocean will claim one soul directly this night. Zhao the DAMNED. It is a good thing for Zuko that Zhao was too proud to accept help. The ocean would have taken them both. Nah, don't hold back the tears. That's only going to hurt at this point. Zuko's been going for 2-3 days at this point. Rest is very needed. Zuko's little sister, last seen in the flashback looking on with a smile as their father scarred her brother before casting him out.

Homegirl slowly realizing how good the writing, over all quality of this show, and all its characters truly are, not even just for a "Kids show" one episode at a time. Every episode is good, nothing is filler.

I always love the detail that Iroh tells Zuko early on in the season "a man needs his rest" and Zuko blows off the advice... but at the END of the season after Zuko has been through a lot, he listens when offered the same advice. Growth, even if small...

Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill, who I believe was BORN to voice cartoon villains

Zhao isn't dead per se, but he sure as hell ain't coming back until Legend of Korra. If you ever see that scene, you gonna WISH Zuko burnt his ass to a chicken nugget instead of what actually happened to Zhao. 😖
