The Final Syndicate Scenes from X-Files Season 3 Episode 16: Apocrypha Part 1

I love these scenes - to me this was the peak of the X Files - the dynamic relationships between the consortium vs CSM vs Mulder/Scully vs Krycek. There is so much going on in each scene and it's something the X Files lacked after season 6 and was missing completely after season 8. I wish they didn't move the filming to LA and kept the Syndicate around for a couple more seasons. Two Fathers/One Son was such an anticlimax

As a kid they added a certain surreal _je ne sais quoi_ to the show, these men, each fairly mundane yet with an odd characteristic like a deep sing-song voice, a taste for stogie cigars or a British regality...

I enjoyed how they showed that there was conflict even within the Syndicate. Deep Throat, a founding member, betrays them. Later on, we see both CSM and WMM at odds with them, although, aside from the first movie, CSM was always more of a maverick. Krycek moves in and out of their circle, never really trusted but a known quantity nonetheless. It was fascinating to see how the shadowy forces working against Mulder and Scully weren't a faceless monolith, but comprised of, well, people, with their own goals and flaws; many of them were never named - and never needed to be, particularly CSM. After 6x12, that darkly magical element was gone, and a lot went with it.
@nnthayer
2 жыл бұрын
@RedTiger Yeah, I think the most of that conflict we got to see was in "The Red and the Black" where WMM was desperately trying to show the group that the vaccine meant they had a viable alternative to collaboration. But "survival at any cost", championed by the First Elder, won out - I would call him more just single-minded than a psychopath, although he was definitely scary as hell - and of course they paid for that later on. I can't say I was a big fan of 6x11-12 in general, though; aside from the CSM/Spender drama being ham-handed, eliminating the group felt like too-easy drama that took away an important element. I do like your idea of exploring the *evolution* of the group. In 1973, they felt confident enough in their purpose to have a group photo taken at that mining company, but after Mulder entered the picture, they were bickering with each other and killing each other off. And actually, now that I think about it, there is something chilling in the conspiracy running on autopilot afterwards, the sheer "scope and grandeur of the project," as WMM put it, meaning that even the death of the men who masterminded it ultimately didn't make a difference.

Always liked WMM. He had the voice and the dignified bearing to be the "elder statesman" of the group; not exactly in charge, but well-respected. We saw him come into conflict with them later on, first when they dismissed his idea of siding with the alien rebels, and then (in the first movie) when they decided on a course of action regarding the gestating aliens without his input. In retrospect this was just the first step towards eliminating the Syndicate from the X-Files universe entirely.
