The politicians will never understand the genuine pain and heartbreak it caused lads (and whole communities) when Regiments were done away with. Especially ones like this which spanned a border and a religious schism and built many bridges in a divided community. Madness.

Ken Shipton. Joined regiment at Paderborn in 48 as a driver operator. Went on to Dingo as 15 Able. Am one of the oldest surviving members at 92. Memories of the regiment marching to church for Oates Sunday service. In those days there was no fraternising but the locals turned out to welcome us.

Excellent but Moving sad Farewell. Only just found this film on You Tube, brought back memories of seeing The Band and the Regiment, marching through Manchester many years ago, and always remembered the distinctive green trousers with the broad yellow stripe. Shame they were amalgamated. I have the CD "In Concert with The Band of The Dragoon Guards" which is a good souvenir of a Proud Regiment.

I had the privilege of being known to the late Colonel Sir Mike Ansell DSO and once had an opportunity of joining this great regiment. Not doing so was the biggest mistake of my life. His book 'Soldier On' is highly recommended. After being blinded in WW2 he continued to set one shining example after another with his brilliant 'Horse of the Year' show and many other achievements. An amazing and remarkable soldier who never faltered and suffered far more than most both in action and later life.

Amalgamation is a near fatal blow to regiments soul and spirit. And of course haven’t all the defence cuts worked out well- just ask Vladimir Putin. I doubt we could field a brigade without back filling and cannibalism. An appalling state of affairs.

We had a 5th. skin in my intake, unfortunately, personal hygiene was a problem. I was tasked with cleaning him up. As room-leader I organised bathing, not one he would want to repeat. Something I'm not proud of, but the intake Sargeant gave me no option. Nobody wants to serve with someone who's dirty and smelly, particularly in a tank environment. Nonetheless, it is always sad when historic regiments amalgamate, it is an end to a rich history. I was greatly saddened when my regiment amalgamated with the 14th. 20th. Hussars, fortunately, the crimson trousers survived, and Prince Albert's legacy continued. We took over from the 4th. 7th. Dragoon Guards and the state of the equipment left much to be desired, but they were days when BMT's and other vehicles were evolving. Like any other soldier worth his salt, I am proud to have served in a Cavalry Regiment.
