Mortara Case: The Kidnapping That Led To The Fall Of The Inquisition

Bologna 1858, a Jewish boy is kidnapped by the Inquisition. His father takes up a struggle begun by Napoleon 60 years earlier. The emperor nearly succeeds in dismantling the inquisition and securing its secret files, but the popes regain their earthly powers. Decades later a desperate father will fight to get back his son. The boy becomes a symbol for an embattled pope. The jewish father and the emperor unleash the forces that bring about the end of the inquisition.

Hate to spoil the fun boys and girls, but The Holy Inquisition is still very much with us: it is now called, “The Congregation for the Doctrine of The Faith”. Among its recent Grand Inquisitors was one, Joseph Ratzinger, who ascended to the Petrine Throne as Pope Benedict XVI -and who is also still very much with us...CORRIGENDUM (edit): WAS very much with us.

I’m a Spanish Jew. My ancestors fled Spain during this inquisition and landed in Nuevo León Mexico. My ancestor who fled was the captain of a ship. When the viceroy of Spain realized these Jews were still practicing in Mexico they offered them land to become Catholic and many did including my ancestors. We still have the recipe of the Jewish holy bread in our family. I am the only one in my family who left the Catholic Church at 13. I’ve been Buddhist for the past 30 years and would never turn back.

I stoped being catholic in the 2000's when people were accusing the church for sexual abuse and thier stories were not recognized , and the church swept it under the rug. Just awful

The Nazarene Jews, the disciples of the historical "Jesus", were on purpose not ordered (as all gentiles / Christians were) by Constantine to his Council of the "goddess" of victory Nikea in 325 NRE. @@catholiccrusader5328 Napoleon was no hero to me either; however, when it comes to three million murdered, he was a mere piker in comparison to the Holy Inquisition, starting in 1478 with the blessing of Pope Sixtus IV , and ending as late as 1826, with MANY millions not just murdered, but either burned to death at the stake, OR ... boiled to death in oil.... now, which pile of garbage would you prefer? Incidentally, I have climbed the Jacob Ladder steps on St. Helena and was in the room where Napoleon died; I was surprised at the size of his face, according to his death mask beside the bed; it was VERY large, so, I guess his head was huge also. Now to Waterloo, it was the men of the Land of my birth that gave the beginning of Napoleon's end... The charge of the Scots Greys Cavalry, along with the Gordon Highlanders, either holding on to the stirrups, or the tails of the horses, taking them into battle, ahead of the other infantry. When returning to Scotland, and, after a Victory March through the streets of Edinburgh, many of those Gordon Highlanders when, returning to their homes, found that their families had fallen victim to the "Highland Clearances", and, never knew to where they had been transported... On second thoughts, maybe Napoleon wasn't as bad in comparison to the absentee English, "titled" landlords who had replaced the exiled Clan Chiefs, and, they in turn, replaced those "missing" Highland women and children with sheep. NOW, what pile of garbage among ALL THOSE, should I choose ?

This is why the separation of Church and State is crucial. The religion or sect is irrelevant. The government is a creation of the people who come together to regulate behavior to achieve harmony and justice between its members. Religion is to give comfort to individuals through their beliefs. These beliefs should never be inflicted upon others thus impinging their freedom or lives. These abuses by medieval thinking Catholics were echoed by Puritans, Moslems, Hindus and others. The only solution is separation of Church and State.

So...Napoleon was not such a bad guy after all. A hero for the common man suffering abuses from the church.

Napoleon did the Will of God (unknowingly), he was the force that ended the power of the Pope. He succeeded in war against Catholic countries until he went into Egypt & Russia, they were not on the Agenda.

Most definitely the RCC is a main player in the prophecies of Daniel 2 & 7 and Revelation 13; 14; 17. There is no other political-religious system that meet the characteristics of them.

Ratzinger was in charge of the Inquisition & there's no reason to think it doesn't still exist. The papal ghetto was a nightmare of inhumanity. These were the first ghettos called that.

Cowardly that he did not at least meet with his father who had suffered soooo very much. What kind of religion is that which is not compassionate for the suffering of others. He hid in a monastery and arrogantly trying to convert rather than just loving them, no matter his personal faith. What an injustice to kidnap a child, The church has a long history of doing this, right into the 20th century.

This sort of cruelty happened to children of the First Americans in the United States. They were stripped of their culture and it is an atrocity not really discussed in American history. This was most disheartening to watch.
