KOTOR to this day is still my favorite game of all time, I've been chasing that dragon ever since I played it as a little kid. OG Bioware had something special going on internally that fizzled out once publishers started to do what they do best, meddle. So yeah, if you liked Mass Effect, I cannot endorse KOTOR 1 & 2 enough

Came across your channel this evening. The wife and I spent the evening watching your Virmire mission and the finale. I remember buying this on release. My favourite game of all time, it pushed the THEN hardware to its limit. ME2 & 3 are a chef’s kiss. Many players see ME:2 in the same vein that Star Wars fans see Empire Strikes Back. For 2007 me looking for a KOTOR style game on my 2 yr old Xbox360, I made a blind purchase and I fell in love with the story. Roll on ME:2, we are here for it.

I love that fight up the outside of the Citadel Tower. One of my favourite fights in the game. Loved hearing your reasoning for why you save the Council. The Dstiny Ascension has a crew of 10,000 Asari and is supposed to be the most powerful dreadnought in the galaxy. Saving it, provng that humanity isn't entirely after it's own advantage, is imo a really important thing to do. I have two other reasons for the same decision. One is that the Geth ships attacking the Ascension aren't going to evaporate when they've finished the job, and I don't want them in the rear of the human ships while those are trying to attack Sovereign. It seems much more sensible to deal with them, take whatever losses they inflict, but at least be able to concentrate on Sovereign unimpeded. The Geth need dealing with just because of that possibility. So I'm being practical as much as Paragon in that reasoning. But honestly one of my reasons for saving them is so I can imagine looking them in the face and saying, "I told you so." Which is very petty and I don't apologise for at all. You know, I don't think I've ever seen anyone pick Udina for the Council seat. I get the feeling he doesn't make himself liked. As for Mass Effect 2, I won't say to forget everything that you learnt about how to play in ME1, but i will warn you that there are significant mechanical changes and some things will need to be re-learnt. And one spoiler, though not in terms of story or gameplay. All the codex entries you've unlocked in ME1 carry over to ME2, but are not marked as read. If you want to only see new ones, one of the first things to do is go in and mark all the Codex entries as read - that way you won't be sifting through all the existing ones to find nuggets of new information.

1:33:30 you're wrong about that! If you choose to not save the Council the destiny ascension gets destroyed, the entire council dies. It then unlocks a further possibility to have a human only council instated which everyone gets pretty pissed off about. You should probably throw out everything you know about story based games because going forwards even inconsequential decisions you wouldn't think twice about can have major impacts on the later events. In ME2 it's possible to make so many wrong choices that the game becomes unbeatable and the reapers win.

Fun ride! Was great seeing you get into the world. Not a bad idea at all to leave a little gap between the game and let this one simmer, because it will. All the choices big and small and other tidbits you pick up will play a part in the next installments, even if some of them are more in the way you personally experience the games than direct effects. You have a few less common choices in there too, among LP'ers, so while every playthrough is unique, anyway, there's some additional novelty for folks waiting :)

Loved going through this journey with you! You definitely have my favorite ME let's play so far! Can't wait for ME 2, I'll catch up on your other videos until then! (Speaking of, my major recommendations for then are the following: You can freely customize your Shepard's appearance and class after importing it to ME 2, and both are even better in this game! You should fully upgrade the Normandy and do all major recruitment/loyalty Missions and Sidequests before launching one called Reaper IFF. When done, it'll start the Endgame and all you can do before the last mission is one last loyalty mission for the last Squadmate. Also, I strongly recommend to watch a guide if you want everyone to survive the last mission, it's super worth it for ME 3's story and missions feeling complete and satisfying.)

You won't catch me doing that on my insanity run haha. I can't wait for ME2. I might watch dishonored in the meantime. I know basically nothing about it. I'm glad you did the Cerberus quests and the loyalty missions. You got to fight thresher maws. You got a solid experience out of the game, as did I watching it all unfold for your first time. You're my fourth playthrough I've watched, and I'm on my fifth playthrough. Still not tired of this game. Probably never will be. Ggs, Commander 🤙 "Fly high, normandy." I looked up at my normandy LED on my wall, and that put a smile on my face. We'll see what Shepard is up to soon 👀

I love how you _understand_ Joker's confidence and importance when you need to land to get to Saren. That breakdown alone is worth the subscription. You're a guy that understands what Mass Effect does and _why_ it does that. I love that. *These guys* The 'statues' you see littered all across Ilos are the _Inusammon_ , a species that predates even the Protheans. So you're correct on that educated guess. *Keepers* There _is_ some unique 'dialogue' if you finish scanning the Keepers, but that is in ME2, not in ME1. *Vigil flashing* This terribly flashing is actually a bad consequence for the Legendary Edition remaster. Back in the original version, Vigil's colors were much more subdued, so it wasn't as straining on the eyes. But since the LE is a remaster, they improved on the color scheme to make it look better. They probably didn't count on Vigil's colors becoming this vibrant though. *50,000 years* To be fair, the current generation can't even fathom how the world looked like 30 years ago, when there wasn't any internet or cell phones. Or 40 years ago, when there weren't even any gaming consoles or games available on PC aside from _Space Invaders_ . Hell, my generation can't even fathom how life was without a TV or radio, so there's not much to blame the younger generations for not understanding if you can't understand your own predecessors. So yeah, 50,000 years would be a bit of a stretch. Not to mention that human societies didn't even exist at that time. At least religion and evolutionary theory agree with each other on that date ;) *Mako* I've actually seen someone doing a playthrough forgetting the Mako when they landed on Virmire. They walked the entirety to where captain Kirrahe had his camp. Such fond memories :D Also, no, those trenches you drive through weren't Protheon roads. Those were the sewers ;) *Conduit* Did you notice that the Conduit on Ilos links to the "Mass Relay Statue" on the Presidium? Avina even told you about it, that people wondered why the Protheans erected a statue for the Mass Relay. So all the way back in episode one or two, the game literally _shows_ you how the end is going to look like. That's some nifty foreshadowing imho :) *Krogan Warlord* The Krogan Warlord you encountered is so strong because of three things: 1 - He's a Krogan. Of course he's strong. 2 - All Krogans have automated health generation as a species perk. 3 - He's got "Immunity" (the white glowing aura), which reduces the damage he takes. You use that all the time as well, so now you see how well that works ;) *Saren* If you didn't have the Paragon/Renegade scores (Charm/Intimidate) to work on him on Virmire, you can't convince him here. That would result in you having to fight him on the Council platform. *Save the Council* This choice is indeed not this difficult, but when under pressure people don't think clearly. And this choice is obviously posed when you're in high adrenaline mode. Your line of logical reasoning is definitely valid and yes - it _has_ consequences in ME2 and ME3. For all options you can pick, not just letting the Council die. As for the Save/Die on the left and Sovereign on the right, I find that pretty inconsistent that they do this every now and then. But I suppose it's more like the left side is an intentional choice, whereas the right one is "I don't care what happens to them, just kill Sovereign". In that sense the left side differs from the right side in terms of intention, because all three boil down to killing Sovereign. It's just not intuitive. There's a bit of game logic implemented here as well; why pose this choice if one of them means the mission fails because you can't kill Sovereign if you save the Council? The player will simply reload and pick the other option. So you're right on that idea too. The cutscene _is_ painful when you choose to let the Council die, or pick the right hand option though. "They ... they cut the communication?" And the sheer unbelief and panic the Asari shows, when realization dawns upon her that you're not going to save them, but sit back and watch them die. *Hackett* Nope. You've never seen Hackett and you haven't missed seeing him somewhere. I think it's quite a feat, having such a prominent character in the game and you've never even seen him, yet you still have a firm idea of how he _should_ look based on hearing his voice. It's a good example of how you can use the imagination of people to reinforce a particular character without actually showing him.

I know it's a bit early, but there are a few things that are handy to know when you start ME2. I don't think it makes much sense to leave this comment on your last _Dishonored_ video when that's the last video before you start ME2. *Subtitles* Subtitles are off by default, so if you want to have them on, make sure to check the options first before you start a new game. *Helmet* This is something a _lot_ of people complain about and it's an oversight on Bioware's end. There are various armors in the game, but these armors won't allow you to unequip the helmet in conversations. So if you have an armor with a helmet that obscures most of your face, you go into conversations _with_ that helmet. It can be both annoying and ridiculous, honestly. Especially in romantic conversations. So if you dislike that, you'll have to unequip that particular armor. Not saying this to scare you into not daring to equip armor, just pointing out that the game simply works like that, so be aware of how the helmet looks. *Codex* ME2 includes most of the ME1 Codex entries and they're all marked as "unread". If you want to read the Codex (either on- or off-screen), you'd do well to click the button to mark the Codex entries as "read" once you gain control of your character, so you don't have to plough through old and new Codex entries. It gets quite overwhelming when you see 200 Codex entries blinking at you from the start. While some Codex entries _are_ new from the very start of the game, doing a quick check is generally preferable than having to panic which blinking Codex entry is the one you just got after clicking something. *Sniper* ME2 actually caters much more to a sniper specialization than it does in ME1. In ME1 you even switched mostly to pistols, but ME2 allows you to make much more use of your class, by actually thinking about what combat designs makes a sniper class good enough for people to prefer that over other classes. So an Infiltrator (or any) class becomes a lot more rewarding, because of its specialization. Plus, headshots feel more rewarding ;) *Paragon* In ME1 many Renegade dialogue options simply sounded like you were an ass. In ME2 the dialogue options _and_ the accompaning lines from Shepard are a lot more realistic. While you can still be an ass at times, Renegade dialogue options also allows you to be a _badass_ . For instance (not a real dialogue from the game), if a criminal points a gun at you, a Paragon would most likely make Shepard tell him to put down his weapon, as a 'good guy' would do. A Renegade dialogue option would be more akin to saying that your gun makes bigger holes. Even though the outcome is the same, it makes the Renegade dialogue options more fun, because it makes more sense to be intimidating to a criminal than to appeal to their good nature. Dialogue options with random people will still give you, say, +2 Paragon/Renegade bonuses, so they don't hold a significant outcome on your Paragon-bar. The big decisions, like killing the Thorian in ME1, make a much bigger impact on your overall image and reputation. This allows you to play around a bit more with Renegade options for small encounters, while not impacting your Paragon run. Do mind to read the skills from your squad screen diligently though, as the "Charm" and "Intimidate" 'powers' have been reworked in a different way. I've seen several playthroughs where people overlooked or ignored that and ended up with no blue/red dialogue choices for a while. While it's your playthrough, I doubt you'll enjoy _not_ having the options for missing them in your squad screen. *DLCs* Unlike ME1, ME2 has several DLCs. Some of them you'll have available from the start, while others will be provided to you throughout your playthrough. Just like in ME1, they're not flagged as DLCs, so you may accidentally stumble upon them while thinking they're side quests, which isn't a bad thing, because it makes these quests organic and natural. Most of the time you can do them whenever you please, but there are some exceptions. One of those is the DLC _Overlord_ , which is a rather difficult one in terms of combat, like Asteroid X-57. I'd recommend to delay that one until at least halfway through the game, when you have access to better equipment and managed to get some experience in level-wise. Doing it late-game, like you did with Asteroid X-57, means it'll be much more of a breeze, but doing it too early will definitely make it less fun because of the challenge in combat ;) *Difficulty* If you die a few times early on, don't worry about it. It's not your fault and it's not the game's fault. They revamped the combat quite a bit, so dying is pretty much mandatory to get used to the new concept. Most people die even on the easy difficulty until they become familiar with the new combat style. When you look at the difficulty levels for ME1, you can easily bump it up to _Insanity_ levels and not see much of a difference aside from enemies having more shields. ME2 has a much more realistic challenge level in terms of difficulty. In ME1 your combat seemed mostly hampered due to the awkward or unresponsive controls (and getting stuck in cover), so you should do fine on Hardcore. I'd love to see you tackling the game on Insanity though :) ... now that's out of the way, I'll go watch how you wrap up ME1 ;)

In my not at all humble opinion, Jade Empire (also by BioWare) is superior to KOTOR

Really? I've only really heard of it in passing. I'm not sure if I'm remembering right but I think I may actually own the game on PC. So maybe we should check that out at some point too? 🤔

@@KingdomAce the gameplay is definitely more fun than KOTOR. KOTOR 1 & 2 I beat twice each (light side/dark side), but Jade Empire I beat 7 times

Dragon Age is pretty much Mass Effect without the _sci-fi_ genre and instead taking place in the _fantasy_ genre. So instead of guns, biotics and tech, you'll get swords, chants/curses and magic. But with the same choice-based stuff, the epic overarching story, the character personalities, romance - and something ME1 didn't do that much: Banter. The banter makes the game so much better than it is. So yeah, Dragon Age is very similar to Mass Effect, just with a different setup. It does some things better and it does some things worse than Mass Effect, but that's the value of different games; you can experiment to see what works for this type of game and what doesn't, and bring over the good parts without the bad parts to the next game. Does this mean Bioware never misses a beat? Oh, they sure do. Dragon Age II was considered a much worse game than the first one, because they improved on the wrong things and didn't do the things that were good in the first game. Mass Effect: Andromeda was considered a bad game, due to the characters looking lifeless and the story being much weaker than we expect from Bioware due to bad management. Anthem was a rushed game, with the deadline forced by EA that they pretty much released an incomplete game that didn't provide anything it promised. Granted, Anthem bombing wasn't really their fault, but it did get them reputation damage. And we're not even talking about the ending for ME3, which you already know about. Drew Karpyshyn was the lead writer for both ME1 and ME2, so the plot and storylines for those were his idea. Then he got into a disagreement with Mac (co-writer and director) about ME3 and decided to leave. Is ME3 a bad game? No. It's a really good game. But it has some moments (like the ending) where the plot sucks, which you didn't see in ME1 and ME2. The ending for ME3 isn't _bad_ either, it's just ... the choices you make and the results you get for the ending are rather ... confusing and unsatisfying. For a game that does _so_ many things right, it feels a bit like a cop-out. *Drew Karpyshyn* When you look at what the lead writer for ME1 has done over the years, it's impressive what response people had to those games. - Baldur's Gate 2 - KOTOR - Mass Effect 1 & 2 and a few more titles that are either lesser known, or bombed, like Anthem. So in general, if Drew is working on a title _and_ it doesn't have huge problems, it's most likely going to be a hit storywise and worldbuilding-wise. Also, he wrote Mass Effect _novels_ to complement the Mass Effect universe. You can find them on Amazon or other places. - Mass Effect: Revelation - The story about Anderson and Saren working on that mission that should've made Anderson a Spectre. - Mass Effect: Ascension - The story about the biotic prodigy Gillian Grayson, who takes shelter on the Quarian Flotilla, while Cerberus tries to infiltrate the Flotilla to capture her. - Mass Effect: Retribution (no summary due to spoilers, since it takes place after ME2) The first story is obviously something from the past. The other stories kind of take place between ME1 and ME3. He's currently working at _Archetype_ , making another sci-fi RPG, most likely in the D&D realm like Baldur's Gate.
