A "chromosome" is a unit of both time and eventfulness. Given a normal year, like 2012, about 5-7 chromosomes worth of events happen per year. This is opposed to, say, 1929, in which 72 chromosomes worth of events happening (the extraterrestrial event of july 16 being equivalent to about 3 chromosomes, the current record holder in recent history.) 1558 is notable as boring, having only .067 chromosomes worth of events happening. Ultimately, the number of chromosomes that passes in a particular year has fluctuated through history and will likely continue to do so for the centuries to come.

Further, it is notable that there are 2 standards of chromosomes: freedom and metric. The freedom scale only describes events that affect 1st world countries or Liberia as significant. Metric describes all world events, excluding North Korea and Botswana.

Yes, even when describing power level or sacrifices, 'event' is still accurate. A chromosomal power level is ones potential to create events and sacrifices are events worth a certain amount of chromosomes
