Taking a look at International Game System's (IGS) PolyGame Master (PGM) and all of the cool fighting games they made, which include Alien Challenge, The Killing Blade, Martial Masters, and Spectral Vs. Generation, which is a crossover between Idea Factory's Spectral Force and Generation of Chaos. I did not mention all of these by name just so I could help the name search algorithm for this very obscure video I promise!!!

Seeing it show up here was like a time machine throwing me 15 years into the past, and I had NO idea it was part of this weird SNK-killer lore. On the topic of overlooked god-tier fighters, I would LOVE to see some coverage of the Power Instinct/Gōketsuji series, Most people only seem to really know about Groove on Fight (which ironically has nothing to do with the entire rest of the series) but the whole series is deserving of some serious praise IMO. All of them are playable through either MAME or Teknoparrot, so they're absolutely worth a try for any fan of the genre.' Legends is probably my personal favorite, but Matrimelee is also sick, even if all of the characters from the old games look totally different.

GOF might be more talked about specifically in context of obscure and underrated games, but it's an exclusive Saturn fg, it just can't compete with the popularity level of the rest.

  • @carlosaugusto9821

    @@GuileWinQuote At least a brief overview would be interesting if you decide to cover those later PI games, because giving the proper context of the franchise would be nice imo. From my experience most fg fans (who don't know much beyond the mainstream, no matter if they are old schoolers) tend to talk like Matrimelee is a standalone game and not just one release from a franchise almost as old as Mortal Kombat, bacause of much Matrimelee stands out in the whole franchise. Oh and the fact it's not numbered in the title name and it's the only NeoGeo title, making it very accessible, must be a big help.

  • @warbossgegguz679

    @warbossgegguz679

    Unfortunately, the reason sprite-art died in most fighting games really has nothing to do with "laziness" or anything. It would only realy be difficult if you went for the approach that something like KOFXIII did with rotoscoped models. In fact, in terms of practicality just scanning drawings would be way easier than modeling, mocaping, etc. the problem is that if a game is going to meet modern HD standards, the power needed for fast sprite scaling in 2K/4K or even just proper 1080p would cause most consoles and PCs to implode. Which is why even in modern anime fighters the sprites are a bit pixelated/crusty: making them straight scans and scaling them would make them run horribly.

    8:46 Actually a little disappointed that GuileWinQuote didn't do his full research for this video, because the IGS Arcade Collection DID eventually patch in proper 4:3 aspect ratio as an option, so to see him just rely on an old tweet from launch, instead of double-checking if anything was changed, is kind of surprising, since he's usually really good on getting his info right; it still may not be a perfect port, but IGS did seem to put in the work to improve upon its launch state. Beyond that, though, I can definitely say that Spectral vs. Generation is indeed a very cool fighter, and I would have loved to see what IGS could have done with a sequel on the PGM2 or 3.

    Once again thanks for talking about this cool stuff GWQ. I just want to add that Spectral vs. Generation had in fact a pretty decent competitive scene in Japan in mid 2000s, because one of the reasons why I got interested in the game were the videos of the tournaments in Tokyo Ranking Fighters (TRF), a legendary game center in Nakano Broadway that still exist. At that time PGM emulation was shitty so I played a crapton of the PS2 version with some friends. Finally one of my friends got a PGM with an original taiwanese SVG cartridge but, for some reason, the taiwanese and the japanese version of the game are pretty different, with combos that you can't do on the taiwanese version. I guess IGS wanted to fix some things when they released the game on Japan so... just in case. PGM is a weird piece of arcade history because IGS truly wanted to go head to head against SNK with the cheapest PCB board ever made at that time yet it was close to impossible to find a PGM game here in latin america. PGM is one of those machines that are alive and has a community online almost exclusively thanks to emulation, so bless the MAME team because I clearly remember how hard was to emulate the machine, in fact PGM still has some emulation issues with timing and some small glitches. Also, on a fun note, IGS is still making arcade games but they are mostly into games for kids, like real small kids. They also still have a good relationship with SNK, as they added some KOF characters on one of their mobile games last month.

    I have mixed feelings about Martial Masters. His first two albums are all-time classics of course but they have a lot of lyrics that haven't aged well. I know it was supposed to be provocative at the time but now it's kind of hard to be okay with some of those lines. And I just cannot bring myself to care about any of his newer material, it feels like he's still riding the success of his early work. I'm from Michigan though so I have a degree of innate fondness for Detroit rappers but there's a lot that are better imo.

    Martial Masters garnered more attention from the fighting community while Spectral VS went largely unknown, but as for me, I picked up Spectral VS and was really into it with my group of fighting game friends because I was a fan of the Spectral Force games. So a fighting game based on the series had my immediate attention. Meanwhile, I have never seen Martial Masters until today LOL. I've also never noticed, that the game is a Japanese/Chinese joint made game! Martial Masters does indeed look really good and certainly a huge step up from IGS's earlier games. I just wish it didn't look so much like Street Fighter III, because even with its beautifully crafted sprites and animation, I just couldn't help but see it as a Street Fighter III knock off with a lot of things the game obviously 'borrowed' or 'inspired' by. In any case, it looks like a lot of fun and I'll have to check it out on the Switch. Speaking of which, I regularly browse through deals on the Switch's eShop but still don't remember seeing this game. I might have skipped through it because it looks like some unknown indie games? But at least I know the name of the game now, so I can just look it up directly.

    These games are still popular in China or at least Chinese diasporia emulation console scenes (I mean those Chinese made handheld or console machines with 10000 games ranging from MAME to Nintendo64 games in them and you can add your own game). Play surprisingly well for arcade games made in the late 90's when Mainland Chinese game studio was still in their infancy. Also another popular Chinese made beat em up arcade game is Knight of Valour series, based on the Three Kingdom characters. In a way it play a bit similar to Capcom Tenchi wo Kurau

    Took a while for something like SvG to be covered by you, and an EXTREMELY LONG time for something like MM to be covered, finally. Since they're marketed under IGS/PGM however, I can see why you'd cover them this way.

    Martial Masters is a gem man, I remember discovering it years ago and being completely blown away, what was this random fighting game with animation quality on par with SF3 and Garou?? I told everyone I could about the game and urged them to try it. Definitely the best obscure fighter I’ve ever played. My only gripe with it is that I wish the music was better, but other than that it’s fantastic.

    I remember first seeing Martial Masters in a DFW bowling alley in 2005 and I was shocked that I had never heard of the game before. Its character sprites and animation rivals anything Capcom put out in the 90s and the backgrounds gave me great Last Blade vibes. And the game itself is pretty solid. You never would have guessed IGS started off with Alien Challenge.

You can emulate it via mame versions before 254 (and also the ST-V bios needed) and every character's super is 222K. it's nuts lol i have not played the prior games but im sure theyre good (they also have playstation and dreamcast ports iirc)

    Oh boy that first game is giving me MS paint vibes lol, yeah they really made huge leaps between games. Martial Masters and Spectral vs Generation, both look great with the gameplay to match them up, with the amount of fighters that were dropping in that era, its easy for them to get lost in the shuffle, but it's good to see them get that attention finally. I'll try and give Spectral vs Generation a bash next session as that's easier to get running on a ps2 for pvp. Great video!

    I’d love too see you cover Omen of Sorrow. It’s a unreal engine fighting game made by a team out of Chile Called A One games. It’s a horror inspired roster with system mechanics that feel like a mix between VSAV and UNI, but with movement that is not nearly as good as that label implies. Jwong did a video about it when it came out on PS4 and it’s really fun. It was pretty much the only game I played during October because it’s so fun and spooky. Also the soundtrack is genuinely amazing.

But Im looking forward to trying all those other ones especially the bowling game. But to stay on topic I love Martial Masters a lot. I never knew it had KOF type of mode because every time I played it, it was always 1 on 1. As for Specral VS Generation, it sucks that Roze is the only Generation character in the game. The rest are Spectral Force or OCs.
