Really top shelf series, details the events of the time looking equally at all participants. There are many existing histories of the Crusades, most fair and honest, but logistically and politically they don't adequately cover the Islamic side of the conflict. That well may be from lack of information at the time, or lack of interest on the part of the public, but times have changed and this series is a substantial improvement on what came before, thank you.

Marvellous video. I've been watching this chanal for a few months now! It's a nice example of historical narrativism. Keep up the good work!

Nice pair of videos, thanks. A lot of YT videos about this era come with a distasteful undercurrent of Islamophobia. I like how you avoid all the 'cross vs. crescent' clash of civilisations nonsense and focus on the power politics that was really at the heart of the period (and basically all periods).

My favorite narrative bit in history is the slew of Syrian Turko-Arabic strongmen who came about and used Jihad as a veneer to bash their Muslim neighbors into submission without outside interference. It's almost as though culture and religion are political tools, rather than self-perpetuating realities that affect everyone the same exact way!

Thanks very much! The story will be continuing, it won't be part 3 though. It will be moving sideways to look at the other powers of the region, before moving forwards to eventually get to the Second Crusade and then the Third, and then the Fourth, etc..

Fascinating, riveting, top quality content! Very impressive recounting of the power politics of the crusader kingdoms in the Levant. I look forward to other episodes in the 500-1200 AD period, the transition from the ancient world dominated by Rome to the high medieval period.

Ah Prince Roger. Vigorous and very much a brave man, but not, i think, a statesman or great survivor of his age. Curiously enough I would say the same thing about Ilghazi, given his imminent following death, drunk and forgettable after being thrashed by the Georgians. Certainly not the equal of King William or King Roger II. Not someone who deserves to be ranked among the great rulers after 1066. This video was quite somber, all things considered. Reminds me of the old Hellenistic saying "Never think to climb Olympus, never try to marry Aphrodite."

You should consider doing a history of the Kurds during this period. Did they have their own dynasty/sultanate or were the Kurds mainly bureaucrats and military officials in service to the Seljuks like Saladin's Family?

Nice idea, I am going to be covering some of the smaller groups under the thumb of the Seljuks during this time. There were various Arab, Kurdish and Armenian groups that rose and fell through these centuries. So many fascinating stories. You are right about Saladin's family. They were loyal soldiers under the Zengids and then rose to prominence.

Eventually! It's a huge subject so it'll require a lot of work to do it justice.

Bad side of fighting against Turks or Mongols (nomadic) that one always faces complete annihilation at defeat because of great mobilization of light cavalry.

I thought this Aleppo war thing was going on like recently.
