    At Schnitzer in Oakland they have a giant spinning shredder and everything is reduced in size. Fluff, the seats, plastic and non metals are sent out one conveyor belt. Magnetic sand is sprinkled on top of the belt and any metal is pulled around and off by a magnetized head roller. The brass and aluminum is separated by one process and so is all the wire by another process.

    while the steel shears are indeed a great tool it surprises me that not more parts are being used for replacement parts on other cars.my first car had already 100k km on the meter. i needed a new backlight, otherwise no sticker from the inspector. going to the company store, the part was still avaiöable, though more expensive that's what i had paid for the car. so i went to a big spare parts yard.and found there in minutes a complete SET of backlights, i did replace both of them. and kept one as spare. and the price obvious was a fraction of the new one. fair enough, that was some 50 years ago. nowadays everything is just being glued together and can not be replaced anymore...

    This is definitely a poor choice. Destroying salvageable components is a very dumb decision in my eyes. Even if one sold the engines for around $150/each, and the same for transmissions, then sell whatever else off the vehicle, there's lots of money to be made in this. This total destruction approach is just foolish in my eyes when many need spares for their car, or need that dash wiring harness, or whatever.

  • @MisonoMika1

    @MisonoMika1

    even though the salvaged parts can be sold, no one would even buy that junk anyways. plus, even if they sell 150 dollars for each engine and transmission, I'd doubt they'll last long anyways since most components may be worn out due to mileage.

  • @bobw7018

    @bobw7018

    6 ай бұрын

    @@MisonoMika1 Clearly you don't work on cars. The #1 reason most cars go to junkyards isn't because they're worn out, it's because they're either RUSTED out, or crashed. 300k miles is not even that high on most cars. This isn't the 60's where we had garbage engines in bodies that would outlive the cars. So yes, people WILL buy those engines. Transmissions have a higher failure rate than engines, so do electronics.
