Hey Fares, great video. This is exactly what the hundreds of thousands of young up and coming swimmers should be watching. I would love to see you analyse the fastest swimmers in the world for each event, break down their technique, breathing patterns, etc. could be an amazing series for your channel.

Oh .. it really is measured in yards.

Ms. Walsh has improved her underwater dynamics. The best sprinters (top 20) in the world have explosive starts. The explosive starts cause movement off the blocks to be slower. The explosive speed off the blocks creates a high impact velocity. This creates deeper entry depth and a faster time between 2 points (not a straight line to the 15 yards). This translates into the swimmer going down to up on the breakout. She is carrying that speed into her free swimming, especially the first few strokes In short course swimming this is advantageous.

I have wondered about kick amplitude vs kick cadence. For sure, higher amplitude gives you more speed to a point, and then the extra drag eventually over comes the extra propulsion. I have long suspected that sprinters will have a slightly higher amplitude on their kicks. Then, I saw a Gary Hall/Race Club video where he it talking about a swimmer and she has the 'fastest underwater dolphin kicks he has seen'. I am fairly sure he is talking about speed and not cadence, and she is high cadence and low amplitude. For sure, when swimming, for max speed you need a high stroke rate, and the higher the better as long as you don't run out of gas first. It would be interesting to see if she would do better with a higher cadence/lower amplitude kick....

Please, always be clear about if it's meters or yards. The video title doesn't say which and, during the video, you seem to confuse the two.

@@timothyzureick5765 In that case, why are the swimmers allowed to spend 15 meters underwater in a yard pool? Shouldn’t the limit be 15 yards? Gretchen Walsh may be the fastest female underwater kicker of all time, but she certainly isn’t the fastest freestyle swimmer (as in moving her arms on top of the water) of all time. She raced Sarah Sjostrom in the 50 free in Fukuoka last July, and she lost by over a second; Sjostrom set a new world record in 23.61, and Walsh got 24.71 and didn’t even make the final.

Parabéns a Gretchen... Excelente prova.

Hey, can anyone give me some advice on how to effectively train for free sprinting? I'm a skinny guy weighing 53kg at nineteen. When I train sprints or sprint drills I get exhausted pretty quickly, when I do cooldown after training I feel pretty weak. Did anyone encounter that?

I’m not much of a swimmer, but from running and cycling I would say sprinting benefits from strength training and ensuring you’re getting enough good quality food. Overall though, I’d not worry too much about being skinny - you’re still very young and it’s a good starting point. Keep it up and your body will adapt 👍.
