In this video I share with you the FASTEST way you can lower your scores. I did this my sophomore year in high school almost every time I went to the range. My scores started getting better really fast and I shortly after I started getting some interest in college coaches. I have 9 different wedge shots that I like to hit so that I can adjust based on different situations. I share my different method of practicing my wedge shots to show you how you can dial in your wedge distances much better when you practice them the way I like to so that you can lower your scores fast.

I did something similar to this last winter. I figured out the distances for each wedge, pitched at 50% - hip height, 75% - chest height and 100% - shoulder height (not including full shots). for four wedges this gave me 12 shots to use in my short game and different approaches.

I find distance control with wedges is basically key to a plus figure handicap, and within limits can get you low 60s rounds without much real thought. I'm usually within a yard of my number, so I'm comfortable with my wedge and short irons. But agree entirely, I've made this a priority as of the past 6 months.

Great advice. I use the clock and now switching to more feel and trying to get that dialed in like I had the clock. Doing that to try and increase the feel in my hands and swing speed to get better. When I used the clock before it was always the same speed but just shorted up on the club and distance of the swing. In the wind that didn’t work as well so I’m trying to switch. Watched a few Wesley Bryan videos with Roger Cleveland and that inspired me to try it.

Colin Shultz I’m not a great, consistent ball striker. I can nut a drive, have 100 to the hole then push or toe a wedge. Or I can hit a terrible drive and a really good second shot. What I am consistent in is around and on the green. I’m able to scramble for a lot pars. I had a bad day striking the ball once and ended up shooting a 76 and had 10 pars in a row, most coming on up and downs. Without my short game, I’d probably be a 13 handicap and not an 8.

Figured out that I’ve been trying to hit my wedges too hard, so started dialing it back, and finally started hitting them close. Luke, I have been working on these lines for some time also using a swing caddy 2 for feedback and do a lot of this type of training on a quiet par 3 course shooting at real greens and at first when I did it I would hit 8 shots at a target and was shocked how poor the pattern was, It seems to me it is far easier getting good distance control from 70 to 120 yards than 30 to 70 where the technique has to be different where the smash factor has to be less. Can you go into how you train those distances and do the 30 to 70 yard distances because those shots are more tricky.

  • @LukeKwonGolf

    @LukeKwonGolf

    5 жыл бұрын

I've had this same issue and I asked my coach in college about it. Basically, even the guys on the pga tour don't really like those 30 to 60 yard shots because they're not really a pitch shot and they're not really a wedge shot either. Those are very feel based and also bring spin in as more of a variable since 70 yards and up you can pretty much count on that ball spinning and sitting pretty consistently. Not really the case for 30- 60 yard shots. Just try to stay away from them unless it's a back flag with a lot of green to work with

@@LukeKwonGolf Luke, That makes sense. I have got to the point with the distance wedges where I can call the distances I have hit the shot in practice before the Swing Caddie 2 starts talking to me from the relative feel to the previous shot. This is where Trackman has helped the pros a lot, you get to equate speed through contact to distance and can get good at it quite quickly and if you can do that and practice it on a regular basis can recall the feel of a distance wedge on the course with a high degree of accuracy. I would like to see a video on the technique you use for your distance wedges. Is the technique a lot different to your full swing? I have been following what James Riyard advocates with feet not too far apart with 70 % weight left with high hands at address standing fairly close to the ball with very little wrist cock almost wooden and Bryson DeChambeau like. It has really helped with my dispersion. The 30 to 60 yard range is more tricky an the technique I have described does not work in those ranges as the smash factor is too high for the relative club head speed so you don't get enough spin and the ball lands an releases too much. For those shots I use something along the lines of what Stan Utley advocates see kzread.info/dash/bejne/n2ZlpZubY7CTXdo.html where I have an underflip going through the ball to reduce smash factor hitting the lower on the ball an increasing spin but it launches higher around 40 degrees so is more difficult to judge distances. I am getting better at it but the dispersment is nowhere near as tight as with the distance wedges. Despite working on those ranges I could never get the same degree of predictability as the distance wedges so what you said makes sense. I was starting to get annoyed that I could not get it to the same standard.

Hey Luke. GREAT content. How long have you had your wedges? How often do you get new ones? I recently purchased a new 56* and compared full shots against my old 56*. The result was that the new one launched slightly lower with more spin. Is this something you monitor?

Thanks jose! Have had these wedges for about 2.5 years now which is way too long but I havent had any club deals until now. I’d probably get a new one at least every year at the minimum if I can. Yes your nippy shots should be coming out lower due to something called spin loft. The ball is able to grab onto the grooves more and launch lower with more spin 👍

When I did this work I became a lot more consistent getting birdie opportunities. Question: when you try to dial in distance, I mean change distance avfew yards, do you find it difficult to keep it online? A couple of yards short is usually right of targetb long, left.

Luke's 100% correct if you are a decent high school golfer, the wedges and mid irons are the money makers especially if you can hit a fairway. Courses are short in high school and coaches want to know if you have the ability to go low, no easier way to do that than give yourself 5-15 foot putts all day long. I wish I would've been a range rat like you instead my high school jump happened because I had a small run down 9 hole course I lived across the street from and went there everyday during summer (dang Ohio weather and no net) and played literally 72 holes per day in my uncle's cart and threw golf balls down all over to hit extra shots. I went to college for engineering not thinking about golf, mainly due to my HS coach sucking at recruiting and only playing small level summer tournaments. The only big tournament I ever played in was the Ohio Junior Am before my senior year at Red Hawk Run and I placed 3rd behind two D1 prospects. Then before I got to campus the coach called asking me to play at ONU (D3). I don't want to get into details but I had one good healthy year with a few wins, even a top 20 in a jamboree featuring D1 teams, and almost a couple school records then things went downhill due to injuries and stupidity plus golf things not being the most accessible.

How did you decide which shots you wanted to be able to hit with each wedge? As in, did you decide that you wanted 10y gaps between each shot and figure out what swing got you there, or did you start with the swing (1/2, 3/4, etc) and see what distances they went?

Just stumbled onto this looking for some advice. I sort of do the same thing with my wedge practice but unfortunately the only range where I can hit off grass is about 45 minutes away the vast majority of my practice is done in my garage off a mat into a net. I use my Garmin approach g80 launch monitor and it is fairly accurate and just in the 6 months of using it to develop shots I've went from a 9.5 to a 3 but it can be hard practicing without really seeing ball flights and feeling the terf interaction of grass so wondering if you have any suggestions on how to spice up the practice a bit more or make it more on course like than doing simulated rounds or random number challenges.. Literally any suggestions will be tried it is very bland finessing balls into a net for hours lol

I use my knockdown 115yd P wedge shot the least. Thats where my gap and P overlap but its one of the most difficult shots for me in my bag. I can never get the trajectory I want for it. Im unsure if its this because of my AP2s and the P wedge takes a lil too much spin away but it comes out too flat and I dont find a lot of scenarios to hit that shot. Any input on that? Maybe its normal and you use it for shots into wind or back pins around 120yards? Unsure. Just havent found a scenario for mine yet.

  • @LukeKwonGolf

It could be maybe a ball issue, maybe your ball doesn't spin enough for you. Not sure, but yeah I generally wouldn't hit a 110 PW to a front flag unless the green conditions are soft 👍

@@LukeKwonGolf i mean yeah the shortest yardage I ever play my P is 120 and furthest without full swinging is 135. I think it might be the head. When I was playing my VR Pros the P wasnt as flat but the lofts were a bit weaker too. Who knows. Nonetheless you make a great point. No excuse to have poor wedge gapping. Good luck this season man you got this. Be cocky in your head!

Another thing I've noticed for me personally is the closer I get to hitting more of a full swing shot the harder time I have controlling the distance. So a 90yd shot with my 58 is more difficult for me to get the yardage right compared to a 70, same thing with a 130 PW compared to a 110 PW. Could just be a personal thing though. Appreciate that my man! 👍
