The Fastest 5-seaters of the 1990s - W124 500E v RS2 v M5 Touring + ND2 - Cammisa Ultimate Drag Race

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Just how fast was the fastest sedan in the world in 1992? The legendary Porsche-built Mercedes-Benz 500E races the fastest wagons in the world: the E34 BMW M5 Touring and the Audi RS2 Avant, which was also built by Porsche!

Veteran automotive journalist Jason Cammisa and SCCA hall-of-fame race-car driver Randy Pobst line up and race the Mercedes 500E (known later as the E500) against the RS 2 and M5, and the results are surprising. Will the Mercedes' 4-speed automatic kill its chances against the two other manuals - a five-speed in the M5 and a six-speed in the Audi?
And what's with the six-cylinder E320 dogleg manual wagon and its DOHC 24V 3.2-liter straight-six?
The 3.8-liter S38 is the biggest straight-six that BMW has ever made, and it produced 340 PS (335 hp) at an insane, independent-throttle-body screaming 6900 rpm. The Audi's much-smaller 2.2-liter, 20-valve turbo five-cylinder made 315 PS (311 hp), and the 5.0-liter quad-cam, DOHC 32V Mercedes V-8 made 326 PS (322 hp) but had variable valve timing so it creamed the others on torque.
The next question is: can any of these 1990s legends keep up with today's slowest sports car, the ND2 Mazda MX-5 Miata? You'll be surprised by the outcome.

On the post production end, painstaking editing on Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. Maybe a combination of both. Speaking from a perspective of a film school student, I’m sure the production setup is a lot more elaborate. This is just what I would guess was involved with making this episode.

E. g. they obviously did several races to get enough footage ... but these scenes get mixed and are kind of confusing because of that (e.g. compare 4:56 to 4:59; one time the Audio jumps ahead, one time the Mercedes).

I love a good Miata but the handling of the 500e is surprisingly good and with a competent driver, it will stay glued to the rears of much newer and “sportier” cars. I have a 560sel s class with the single cam version of the 500e and that car, I could easily pull away from 350 and 370Z’s, older Porsche Carraras, and hot versions of normal cars like the SI and GTI. That’s despite it weighing in at 4100 pounds and having a 4 speed automatic, but it has almost 400 ft-lbs of torque and a wonderful suspension and chassis for a big car.

I absolutely love these videos with Jason Cammisa. The quality of the videos are Beyond Compare, and really enjoy the effects of the car still racing in slow motion as he walks and talks around them. Couldn't help but laugh out loud when Jason sat in the back of the Audi and you can see the driver( probably the great Randy Probst) giving him the finger.

The Miata comparison is a good one; ND2s are actually pretty quick cars. I had a 94 NA and I already found it surprising how quick it got up to 100 MPH for a "slow" car (light weight and low frontal area!), then my friend gets a 2022 and it's another level of performance; he actually recently complained to me he wish it was a little slower bcuz he would like to spend more time in the throttle before he has to lift off or brake xD And I couldn't help but note my Golf Alltrack with a $500 stage 1 chip tune is probably a pretty dead match for an RS2 in a straight line...

RS2 has recorded better times in the past by a huge margin (0-60 of 4.8 and a 1/4 mile of 13.45) of what it produced on this segment. I love the content but I think they were being a little soft on the RS2, it bogged hard after launch and got out of boost then didn't regain boost until mid 2nd gear. I can understand why they didn't want to damage a RS2 being its a $100k car in the US and a limited production car as well.

RS2 was doing sub-14 second quarters when new on OEM 90's tires. It was over a second quicker to 60mph than the Merc back in the day. That's what's so dumb about these kinds of videos. We're talking about three used 30 year-old cars lol. Lord knows what's wrong with any/all of them at this point. It's one thing to say, "on paper this car shouldn't win etc." but quite another to just totally ignore reality. RS2 should be crossing the finish line 2 seconds ahead of the M5 lol but hey whatever gets those clicks, right?

I guess that RS2 didn't have it's best day... It's definitely not 100% healthy, maxing out the rear suspension like that... It probably needs a minor chassis overhaul and a thorough inspection of vacuum hoses and wastegate.

It's also possible the best quarter miles were done by speed-shifting (keeping the throttle pinned) to keep the boost up, but that'd be bad for the clutch and rough on the whole power train. I've had cars in this category since 1995 (Supra, two E39 M5's, R35, F430 spider manual) and I floored them every time I got behind the wheel but never speed-shifted.

@@lqr824 The KKK turbo in the RS 2 is pretty big, but it spools up pretty fast. With a car in perfect health and just a little practice you don't need speed-shifting, it should be a lot faster than in this episode. Speaking from experience...

My opinion is that those walkthrough scenes are filmed practically, they just push the cars into a slow roll. Then layer the fog/dof effects to make the scene look slow-mo. Just would be the easiest way to film it, IME. I also can't remember ever seeing Jason in-car and on-track at the same time... he always exits his own car.
