The reason that the action in the Stories of War feels very staticy is mostly due to the limitations from the Trainz 2019 software used for filming. It doesn't exactly allow the action to fully play out if you were using other filming software like Source Filmmaker as an example and you're basically left to use your imagination.

Actually at the time, Victor Tanzig was still using Trainz: A New Era. Season 4 onward would eventually use Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019.

I wrote a few episodes for Victor that I hoped would become part of Season 6 and onward. Victor read them and enjoyed it.

I do actually agree with the whole shorts thing. It's completely random and doesn't even follow its own canon and feels like just "I thought of this joke, let me make a video on it." and then time gets wasted. Now if the shorts actually expanded on the series itself, that'd be a lot better, like giving some more background on certain engines like "Info Dump: Emily" or something and then it goes into detail about her backstory in like 4-5 minutes of either narration or a voice-over by the character themselves. I also do feel a little annoyed by how obvious who the killer was in Season 5. Like not only did he kill off several major characters and put Thomas in a unique death or lengthy coma from his injuries (effectively writing out the poster boy himself from the series). However, I do love this series and want to see it continue, perhaps with a bit more world building and expansion on certain characters. One character we know for certain won't die is Edward since he's the one telling the stories this entire time. The only time we're likely to see him die is after the stories are finished and they're caught up to modern day (which is when I think the series will end, at least until more worldly events happen to make stories off of.) Arguably the one thing I don't like about the series itself is the killing of main characters. I mean, to be fair there are a LOT of them, at least 2-3 dozen by the middle of the series itself in season 3, but still. And I can also understand or at least rationalize the (supposed) killing of Thomas. The series isn't called "Thomas and the stories of sodor" it's just "The Stories of Sodor" meaning any character can be put on the chopping block at any point in time as no one figure takes the spotlight the entire way through the series.

To be fair to Victor, with regard to the Shorts, Victor is full-time KZread now. And the algorithm punishes you severely if you don't post regularly. And we know from experience that it takes at least a few months to make a full SoS season. That sort of boom and bust, ebb and flow model only works if you're not doing KZread full-time. Victor is full-time, so he needs something to fill the gaps between seasons, so that the algorithm doesn't punish him whenever a new SoS season comes out. And the Shorts fulfill that role of filling the gap decently enough.

On top of that, he is doing all the voice lines, editing, and scripting the story. That is a ton of work for one guy. I can agree the quality has gone down but if you really want to give a proper solution to this, I am all ears.

Victor's early shorts, including the Monty Python adaptation, were his best ones. They were fun, re-watchable and often included a connecting thread. His latter shorts are more watch once and forget.

fun fact: the guy who created Johnny Cuba (the chracters name is actually Cuthbert) is a complete pyscho admitted to harassing Tomix for the model to get made, and also owns a furaffinity full of scat fetish art and i know hes going to see this oh and, he once spammed me with his edgy splatoon ocs and got pissy when i told them to stop edit: ALSO about the standing stones thing, i really want to know where Victor got that Space Battleship Yamato model from

Especially with Stories of War, Douglas did probably mourn. It's just that he had to focus on combat and finishing the war.

I've given a rewrite of the episode "Revenge" in one of Train Theory community posts to give some of the character deaths more meaning. Here's what I wrote. "TBH, if I was able to remake Season 5 I would have Peter crash in the episode "Vandalism" instead of Geoffrey and he would survive, but his crew wouldn't be so lucky. As for Geoffrey, I would kill him off in the episode "Revenge." In that episode, Geoffrey is underperforming on heavy goods due to metal fatigue and Peter offers to double head the next train with him. The following day, both engines head off to Vicarstown after Francis warns Peter of a guy named Luther von Huss. When the two engines are in the Vicarstown yard, Peter is confronted by Luther and right when he's about to get shot, Geoffrey pushes Peter out of the way and he gets shot in the firebox, killing him instantly. Later when the other engines are informed of Geoffrey's death, Peter feels guilty that Geoffrey died because he got caught in the crosshairs one of his bombing victims. But the other engines, including Francis comfort him and assure him that he's not to blame, showing that Francis does have a good side towards the steam engines. After Mr. Zorro is later shot by Shawn, the NWR hold a funeral for him and Geoffrey the next night and during that same night Shawn plants a bomb in a van carrying Munitions which would lead into the next episode. Since "Munitions" takes place shortly after "Revenge" the engines would still be mourning Geoffrey and Zorro, which makes them more irritable and argumentative around Benson."

Excellent video! as someone who’s been a big fan of Victor’s for a long time, I agree with most of these points, especially about Season 5 and the shorts. We can only hope that the recent reactions to his content will serve as a learning experience and that his quality of content will improve once again. Best wishes to you!

Having recently rewatched the whole of The Stories Of Sodor, I can definitely agree with all of your claims.

Very well done. All criticism was constructive, not just mindless bashing.

You know, I liked the stories of war and one problem I have with that mini series is that it’s harder to take the war scenes seriously with the engines still in their regular liveries and not painted in black.

Really well put together video, I think the main reason why I season 5 turned out the way it did is again a combination of writer's block but also I need to get the videos out what's my favorite salted and left rewrites, also Victor confirmed that Thomas coming back won't manifest for a few years I assume one at most but still, and on the video itself it was probably one of the best edited videos talking about the stories of Sodor I've seen it almost reminded me of a Chazington video.

I personally don't mind Victor.. Thinning the deck, there was a problem of to juggle so many characters, there's a reason some needed to go, like mickey and Derek didn't need to co exist, especially as mickey already took joeys role too

I first watched Victor's videos just as 2017 was close to being over several months after he came to KZread. I believe the first video I watched from him was "Teacher" or "Spoilers" (AKA the start of inconic gag.... 😂)

Yeah, season 5 was just.... bad. It's bad in the fact that it just rushed through so many plotlines after a promising trailer and all of the questions left after SCPs of Sodor just weren't brought up again which was disappointing so I guess we'll have to wait for another year before we know what the deal is with the Mr. Starr being King Godred plot gets resolved. Also the steam engines being converted into diesel engines with the outlines of a steamer.... yeah, no. No. That's dumb, its illogical and it spits in the face of the idea of steam preservation. This is the reason why I think Victor needs another writer to bounce ideas off of so that his more out-there ideas are done to help prevent logic defying leaps of suspension of disbelief to help keep the series grounded.

Season 5 definitely suffers from what I call “Sword Art Online Pacing”. It’s where whomever wrote the series was experiencing writers block, or just didn’t have the plot for a second, resulting in pacing that is far too quick, episodes written piece by piece to the point where they have trouble matching the tonal and quality norms of other episodes, and sometimes can make characters personalities and skills dependant on what the plot needs (Victor didn’t fall this low). I named such, because Sword Art Online suffers heavily from this, the first season being written out of sequence, and by an author who should have taken a bit more time to think of how everything would work when interconnected. The later parts of the Second season, when it’s done wrapping up the first season, is genuinely good, and everything works well, but everything else… let’s not go there.

Stories of Sodor is by far my favorite fan series and is the main inspiration for both of my own planned series. RWS: The True Stories of Sodor, and American Railroad Tales or A.R.T. for short.

I think Victor in a way has revolutionized storytelling for the Thomas fanbase more so than any who came before him. What started off as a largely Tugs Retelling in my eyes, has become the best written Thomas Series on this platform.

I kinda wish they made the ending more impactful and woeful instead of being oh no bad guy dead, oh well happy ending. Honestly Victor should’ve just focused on Stories of Sodor or take a break.

I liked the series for the most part but season 5 rubbed me the wrong way. It's not the character's death or most of them, (Felt Peter's death was cheap) it was the fact Edward and Barry....and Henry are now diesels.

@@jackkoffman5742I agree, my good man. That was stupid, and I liked Victor's AU of sentient vehicles having a basic right to life and death if they choose, rather than what happens IRL. Yeah, it did take me some time to get used to most of the events known in the RWS and TVS, like Thomas and Gordon, and Edward's Day Out being only real in Wilbert's books.

Season 4 is best, change my mind.

Since Thomas is being sent to Barry Island Scrapyard which is famous for accidentally preserving steam engines, he will likely stay there for several years until he wakes up after the green water wears off. We already saw something similar happen to Barry where he was accidentally sent to be scrapped, but over the next few years he was moved from scrapyard to scrapyard until he arrived on Sodor where he finally woke up.

I think s5s runtime really hurt it. And i think tugs munitions adaptation. I think he was really limited with trainz.

The sad theme from season 1 immediately after a racist tirade from a talking stream engine cracked me up. First episode of the series I struggled to take srsly.

I'm just gonna say it: "Animosity" and "Beeching" are my least favorite episodes of Season 4B.

I honestly think the hate on Victor is just beating a dead horse at this point, sure he's done stuff fans don't agree with, but why focus on that when you can focus on the positive?? Seasons 1-4 were awesome, same with TSOW, SCPs of Sodor is ok, but not as good as the rest, like I said, people are just beating a dead horse by hating on the shorts, S5 and everthing else, and DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THOMAS' DEATH, for Awdry's sake people, I get you love Thomas, but Jesus.Tapdancing.Christ, the way you hate on it, it's like Victor killed someone!! Thomas is a fan favorite character sure, but c'mon guys, you're better than that, grow up, shut up, and stop hating on a guy who just wants to make content.

I feel like season 5 is bulled to mich because everyone feels liek its too short aand jas no point but heres the thing. season 5 is different yes but if you think about it its a one year thing in season 5 and he must have had a hard time making this season and I liked it hell I Loved it. It felt exciting and interesting. This was one of my favorite but with season 4 in first place. Give Victor Tanzig a break and don't criticize every wrong thing because thats what ive seen. I've watch many Thomas series qnd sometimes bigger isent better and sometimes videos that are 10 minutes long can also be good. I challenge you to rewatch season 5 and think about how much work Victor puts in this series because I give Season 5 a 9/10. Also with season 6 coming, Since it will not just be a one year thing, there episodes may be longer or if he dose more 10 minute episodes, I'll still watch them.
