as a side, the cut from Goodfellas, has background music, taken from the movie, the great rock n roll swindle, in the scene where sid viscous is on stage in paris, singing My Way, and at the end of the song, he pulls out a revolver and shoots into the audience. turns his back and walks away, its a bit of a random and meaningless scene in that movie too, so may also be a nod to the great train robbery and then given a second nod in Goodfellas.

@@TonisFilmClub The producer of Great Train Robbery was Edison and I read that he thought the future of the industry was more in the kinetoscope - a one person at a time coin operated peep show running short loops (his factory had also created the kinetograph movie camera) and arcades that he had invested in, rather than the huge projected image concept within giant theatres that were built to accommodate the subsequent enormous demand.

......I just realized that's basically the plot of RDR2 as well. You're a cool badass bunch of outlaws, you do some great heists (and the train heists are among the most notable, and even pays homage to movies like The Assassination of Jesse James and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, etc). By the end, the gang is falling apart trying to kill each other, and then the cops (Pinkertons) show up. Now, the cops getting them all is delayed several years, but in the end... the cops do get them all. I love how skilled storytellers, writers, game developers, movie directors, animators, etc... can basically retell these very same stories over and over and do it in fresh ways so we don't immediately recognize the tropes and plots.

It is a bit of a grey area regarding which movie would classify as the very first narrative, but most people would probably bet on the early works of Georges Méliès such as "A Trip to the Moon" from 1902 and "Joan of Arc" from 1900, Unfortunately a lot of silent films from that time period are lost so we would probably never be able to tell for sure.

I just love cinema, movies and film history. Can talk about it all day, every day, so I thought I'd share the love and nerd out with likeminded people. Plus I get to do some really stupid jokes which for some reason make me laugh.

A Trip to the Moon came out a year before. It was more impressive.

@@TonisFilmClub Agree with you - it certainly laid the groundwork for the genre.

I am 83 years old and my grandfather John S. Whichel was an extra in the filming of this movie in 1903. At the time, he lived in Lyndhurst, N.J. and had just been discharged from the U.S. Army. He was a cavalry trooper in troop B, 3rd. US Cav. The film maker was looking for extras with a lot of experience in working with horses. Who better than a US Cavalry trooper? I think I even have an old photo taken during the filming. I really enjoyed your vidio. Thanks, Ron
